AT SATURDAY’S GAME Freeport quarterback Isaiah Barnes, left, gets set to pass. Above, the Devils execute a play. photos by Linda Hendrickson

Freeport loses nail-biter to East Meadow by Linda Hendrickson Freeport’s Red Devils football team ended its season Saturday night under the lights at Hofstra with a disappointing 34-33 loss to East Meadow Jets in the Nassau County Class I Championship. The game was a hard-fought dramatic nail-biter from start to finish. Freeport had some spectacular plays and East Meadow was methodical throughout. With the score 34-33, Isaiah Barnes connected with Jere Brown to move the ball to its own 30. The Red Devils then drove it to the four-yard line as Barnes hit Brown again. Barnes was sacked on the 4-yard line but couldn’t connect with Leondre Simmon, and the run failed on the final down. The crowd that was on its feet expecting the winning TD was stunned and quiet. The Jets played a very good game, as did the Red Devils. Simmon scored on a 14-yard pass from Barnes and Freeport was on the score board first. Rob Healy ran for a 13-yard

TD to tie the game but the Jets point-after was good, giving them a 7-6 advantage. Brown scored next on a 23-yard pass from Barnes and then scored the two-point conversion to go ahead 14-7. East Meadow scored twice, giving them a 21-14 hard-time lead. The Red Devils were fired up after the break. Evan Lapice scored on a 27-yard pass from Barnes and then scored on a 4-yard run. One kick was good and one failed. Freeport was on top again. Healy scored on a 53-yard pass from Dylan Curry and the Jets extra point was good, too. Freeport’s last offensive effort came on a 23-yard pass from Barnes to Simmon, but the conversion failed. East Meadow scored on a 5yard run with 4:23 left in the game, putting them ahead 34-33. Barnes completed 15-for-26 for 320 yards and four TDs. Brown had five big catches for 100 yards and Simmon had 119 yards on five big passes. Four yards were all the Red Devils needed at the end of the game but it was not to be. It was a great season for a great group of young men, but it wasn’t the ending they wanted.

Featured athlete of the week Jere Brown is the featured athlete of the week. He is a wide receiver and defensive back in football and the shooting guard in basketball. “He has been our goto-guy on offense for three years,” commented Coach Russ Cellan. “He makes things happen. He’s aggressive, skilled and quick thinking on the field. Saturday’s game is a perfect example of his talents.” “I like to run and it gives me something to do. It keeps me focused and out of trouble,” remarked Jere. “I enjoy volunteering my time to PAL Basketball and Football especially, but I have also done the Breast Cancer walk and Build A Bear Christmas.” When not involved in a sporting

activity he participates in the 21st Century and Key Clubs. Jere is planning to go to college and hopes to play college sports. He dreams of becoming an NFL player, but will set his studies and efforts to the field of athletic trainer.

TONY GIRON (center) was recognized by, from left, Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin and Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla.

Freeporter Tony Giron is ‘making a difference’ Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the town board recognized 14 extraordinary community members, inclusing Tony Giron of Freeport, for contributions to their local neighborhoods at the 15th Annual “Make A Difference” awards ceremony. “The inspirational people being honored are truly the unsung heroes of our communities,” said Supervisor Murray. “Their selfless acts of volunteerism and leadership are true symbols of Hempstead town and make our township such a great place to live, work and raise a family.” The honorees have all dedicated themselves to enriching the lives of others. Hundreds of nominations were received for the prestigious award. Those selected, Supervisor Murray noted, have quietly carried out acts of selfless generosity for many years. “Our award recipients do not seek recognition, expect rewards or even look for a simple thank you. These special people just care. They care for their neighbors, their colleagues, their friends, their families and their communities,” concluded Supervisor Murray. “Tonight we are personally thanking

them for making the world a better place.”

Tony Giron Heriberto “Tony” Giron of Freeport carries a full-time job, attends college fulltime and raises a child as a single dad. He does all of this without access to a car. Tony enriches the lives of young people as a soccer coach, mentor and friend. Indeed, Tony is a beloved coach to not one, but two soccer teams in the Freeport PAL program. Mr. Giron’s coaching abilities go beyond strategy, he instills the values of team work, sportsmanship, and most importantly, fun. Even during the summer, when the soccer league season is over, Tony can usually be found at Randall Park running free impromptu practices and training sessions for all kids, regardless of their team or skill set. The hours of life-enhancing interaction with young people are particularly important for many of the children who are from single-family homes, as well as those who can’t afford expensive private sports camps.

Arrest in Freeport homicide Nassau County Police Homicide Squad has arrested a Baldwin man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in June in Freeport. According to detectives, 911 received a call at 2:40 a.m. for shots fired near the Milburn Creek Park. Freeport Police Officers responded to the area and found a female victim, Kelly Ann McGuire, 43, of Freeport, suffering from an appar-

The community newspaper - the glue that helps hold a community together, and the spur that helps keep it moving forward.

Forget Black Friday, Small Business Saturday is coming This year, “Black Friday” sales are even starting on Thanksgiving at some big box stores. The mad rush that claimed the life of a young Walmart employee crushed in a stampede some years ago is starting. We can expect parking lot rage, long lines at checkout counters, sticker shock and all the signs of the holiday shopping that make it the antithesis of what it is supposed to be. But, take heart, Small Business Saturday is coming. A promotion started by American Express, it means showing your community spirit by patronizing small businesses run by your neighbors and friends. Small Business Saturday means shopping where they know your name. It means strolling downtown in your hometown and looking in all the windows for a serendipitous gift idea. Your local merchant is also often the one that helps support your child’s team and gives to the PTA for school events. She helps shoulder the local tax burden and gives to local charities. The beautiful holiday decorations are funded by your local chamber of commerce, which also organizes several holiday events to help bring the community together. Church and temple bazaars are also great places to find unique gifts that will be treasured for a lifetime. If you have no other choice, endure Black Friday. But enjoy Small Business Saturday. It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit. And send us your stories about how you spent Small Business Saturday. We would love to share them.

“Just Go With It” will be shown on Friday, November 25 at 3 and 7 p.m. A plastic surgeon convinces his loyal assistant to pose as his soon-to-be-divorced wife in order to cover up a careless lie he told to his much younger girlfriend. Rated PG-13; 116 minutes; 2011.

The library continues its popular monthly “Current Events in Perspective” series conducted by Michael D’Innocenzo-Libresco, professor of history at Hofstra University, on the first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. On Thursday, December 1, Professor D’Innocenzo-Libresco will offer his perspectives on people and events that define our times. He invites and facilitates exchanges of views. This series is made possible by a generous grant from the Dr. Rudolph and Mildred Joseph Foundation.

Freeport Red Stars win division The Freeport Red Stars recently took to their home field at Cleveland Avenue for the final game of the 2011 fall season. The Red Stars are a Freeport PAL Travel girls’ soccer team in the Long Island Junior Soccer League, which began in January of this year. After a spring season that ended with four wins and six losses, the team continued to train over the summer, in hopes of being a more competitive team. The fall season began in September, against Bethpage. With a 2-0 win, the Red Stars were off to a good start. The weeks went on and the team continued to win, beating Baldwin 3-0 and Jericho 1-0. The toughest game was against Mineola, where the two teams tied 1-1. The Red Stars bounced right back the next few weeks with a 5-0 victory over Bellmore, then a 4-0 win over Port Washington and a 3-2 win over

Bethpage again. A make-up game was played from the October snowstorm day, against Manhasset. The team continued its strong play, winning 4-0. The final game, against Baldwin, turned out to be a real nail-biter, as the two teams battled back and forth. At the end of the first half it was tied 0-0. About 10 minutes into the second half, the Red Stars had a corner kick and after three to four touches by multiple players, the ball finally made its way into the Baldwin goal. The game finished with a 1-0 win making them the Girls Under 11 Division 7 Champions, with a record of eight wins, 0 losses and one tie with 24 goals scored and three goals against. Congratulations to the undefeated Red Stars!
