Editor’s note
"There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else." — Sam Walton
T
o Our Readers: Welcome to the 23rd annual edition of Best of Denton, a guide to the most outstanding businesses in town. You received this magazine because you subscribe to the Denton Record-Chronicle. You are our customer, and we don't want you to fire us. So, we try to produce a daily newspaper and other publications that you will find useful and interesting. Best of Denton is a prime example of our company's desire to be a positive force in the community. Earlier this year, more than 10,000 people cast ballots to propel their favorite businesses into the winner's circle. Of course, there are no guarantees in life, but we suspect the winners and runners-up honored in these pages all
put their customers first. Sam Walton considered it the golden rule of business, and he became pretty successful. Undoubtedly, you've seen the Record-Chronicle's blue-ribbon plaque or banner displayed at dozens of businesses across the city. The proprietors are proud of the recognition, and rightly so. We hope you will put Best of Denton magazine in a prominent place in your home and use it throughout the year when deciding where to spend your hard-earned cash. Show it to outof-town visitors and let them decide where to take you to eat, drink or shop while they're in Denton. For those who want to view the magazine on-line, you can find it as a PDF document on www.DentonRC. com Thanks to those of you who took time to vote. Most of all, thanks to the hundreds of Denton businesses that put customers first. Scott K. Parks Managing Editor

East Side, a small Denton bar a block off the downtown Denton Square, has won residents’ hearts with 89 craft beers on tap, a pretty patio and bartenders who do their homework. The local craft bar opened its doors two and a half years ago with a well-designed, smoke-free interior and a comfortable patio out back. Manager Kregg Ross said the small neighborhood bar is pleased to score so many titles in Best of Denton. East Side exclusively serves craft beer, and Kregg said the staff has to learn about the industry and what it’s pouring. Late last year, the bar started selling cigars, and patrons are buying them. The Bearded Lady may be the world’s only traditional barbershop on wheels, offering premium services from premium barbers. The grooming parlor and beard emporium built a reputation in Denton in a short amount of time after opening for business in August 2015. As a traditional barbershop, there are no televisions or Wi-Fi. On the Bearded Lady website, the shop is advertised as one that could be your grandfather’s barbershop. Music is played on vinyl, and everything about the shop is old-fashioned. The fullservice package offered by the Bearded Lady includes a haircut, straight razor shave, a hot towel and a cigar. “This adventure has far exceeded our expectations,” owner Zack Johnston said. “It is beyond humbling.” Runner-up: Campus Barber Shop Honorable Mention: Sports Clips

Soma Massage Therapy owner Amber Briggle considers her service to her customers much like the care of your car — regular maintenance can keep it running in good shape. “Regular massage can help you prevent injuries and can boost your overall wellness,” Briggle says. “It needs to be taken seriously rather than as a luxury.” Certainly, Soma Massage Therapy takes its approach to its clients very seriously. As a small, local business — which has been named a Best of Denton business each of the three years it’s been in operation — Briggle not only understands the massage therapy business but makes sure her clients get great massages that stand out from the rest. One way she does that is by not accepting tips. “Our philosophy of massage is that this is good for you, and you need to start thinking of your massage therapist as someone you’d include in your health care team,” Briggle says.
For more than a decade, Bella Salon & Spa has served the Denton community as a full-service salon and spa offering services of nails, hair, facials, massages, waxing, lash extensions and permanent makeup. The facility is the largest and most elegant in Denton, and helps to provide a feeling of true relaxation for customers. “Our customers are like family to us,” owners Kim and Patrick Nguyen said. “They’re very loyal.
