THE LMA WAY... LMA is different. From the way we do things, through to the key beliefs that sit at the heart of our ethos. As well as receiving academic support, there’s also an expert team of advisors on hand to help you grow and develop, ensuring you’re equipped to succeed. With us, you’ll gain a degree, but you’ll also nurture and enhance the passion needed for a successful career. Welcome to the LMA way...

STUDENT FIRST Taking a Student First approach in everything we do is at the heart of our DNA. First and foremost, LMA is centred around best serving its students. We understand that every student – together with their goals and motivations – is unique and we’ll move mountains to make things happen for them. We are perfectly placed to view the world through their eyes. This approach of empathy, nurture and positivity, allows us to deliver great results, time and again.

COLLABORATIVE We truly believe that students become part of the LMA family when they join us. They can only feel this through individuals and teams sharing information and collaborating with a student first mindset. This is the foundation of our success, being about the many, not the few. We encourage collaboration across all areas of the campuses. Students working together across departments to gain the skills and 6

experiences that set them apart and our LMA staff collaborating at all levels so we are exploring every opportunity to add to the student experience.

CURIOUS Our students expect us to be progressive, innovative and informed so we encourage the same from them. Staying curious is at the heart of this, applying curiosity to student first ideas, working solutions and personal development. Staying curious allows for continuous learning, improvement of service and guards against complacency. Demonstrating a desire to understand and engage with each others’ differing backgrounds, outlooks and perspectives. We encourage staff and students to be informed about the latest trends and industry news, to stay one step ahead. Curiosity allows us all to think outside the box, be creative, and “make things happen that otherwise would not”.

LOVE MEDIA. LOVE MUSIC. LOVE ARTS.

EGOLESS GIVING YOUR BEST SELF Commit 100% and give your best self to others and not just for your own benefit. HUMILITY We accept that one individual can’t have all the answers and that asking for input from others around you is not a weakness.

#LOVELMA

STRIVE TO IMPROVE You acknowledge that you won’t always be on top of your game, admit when you’ve made a mistake and welcome constructive feedback.

COURAGEOUS Creating an environment where we are honest with each other will lead to the right, not convenient outcome. We encourage our students and staff to be the best versions of themselves, staying in our comfort zones is not good enough. Be honest with yourself first and foremost. Where are you strong and where are you weaker? We’re all here to support your development so this honesty simply helps us to help you. Being courageous enough to be vulnerable with each other removes barriers, creates trust and enables teams to come together in a supportive and inclusive way that lets everyone grow. We always encourage students and staff to speak up if something just isn’t right. Given this voice to be courageous is something that underpins the entire LMA Way. 7

MONEY MATTERS STUDENT FINANCE

MANAGING YOUR MONEY

You can apply for Student Finance for your tuition fees loan and also apply for a Maintenance loan which will help with living expenses whilst you are studying.

It’s important to know how to manage your money as a student, otherwise it won’t last through term time and holidays. Many choose to stay in the family home to save on living costs, but for others it’s usually the first experience of living away from home. We understand the temptations when your student loans arrive but this exciting time comes with a number of new responsibilities, including the need to take control of your finances. Try and look for work as soon as possible – there’s likely to be lots of competition! Once you’ve worked out your budget, you’ll see if taking on part-time work is a good idea.

You should ideally apply for your student finance by the end of May, before your course starts. Doing it by this time should prevent any delays in you receiving your loan at the start of term. If you miss the deadline for whatever reason don’t worry, you can still submit your application but there may be delays on receiving your loan at the start of term. When applying for Student Finance you can apply for a tuition fee loan, which covers your fees for the course and a maintenance loan which will help with living costs whilst studying. Some maintenance loans can be assessed on your family income. Use the student finance calculator to see your entitlement at:

www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator/y Student finance is available to full-time and part-time UK students who meet the eligibility rules for student finance. Your maintenance loan will be paid directly into your bank account by the Student Loans company once you have enrolled and started attending your course, the loan is paid in three termly instalments. To find out how to apply for Student Finance, follow this link: www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login 30

LMA students will have access to the local jobs vacancy section of the LMA app where local businesses update us directly of any vacancies available. These opportunities could be during the holidays or term time. But don’t neglect your studies – research shows that more than 20 hours of work a week can have a negative impact on academic performance. So if you’re aiming for a job during term time, try and find a good work and study balance. For advice on money matters, please visit our website and complete the ‘Contact us’ form.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... LMA offers a creative environment in a family atmosphere, where tutors are experienced industry professionals, facilities are second to none, and hard work promises to bring great rewards.

“I am so grateful for my time at LMA, I would not be the artist I am without the support from the tutors and all of the staff. All tutors are industry professionals which gave me the confidence and skills to write my own music and go onto release my own songs. Three years ago, before I started LMA, I would never have imagined my songs being played and streamed on national radio stations and music platforms. This is definitely down to the opportunities and networking that LMA provides.”

Fiona Lennon Music Industry & Performance Graduate

Here is what four of our recent graduates have to say about their time at LMA – and why you should follow in their footsteps.

“LMA has greatly impacted my career. Since graduating, I’ve worked on world class movies, TV dramas, Netflix series and TV ads, as a Film & TV Location Assistant. My first big job offer came via LMA’s connections with Netflix, for the hit series ‘The Irregulars’. From this I was employed to work on ‘The Batman’ movie in my hometown Liverpool, which was a dream come true! My career is thriving, working on Channel 4’s ‘Help’, a Sky drama, ITV’s ‘Rules of The Game’ and a TV Ad for BT Sport. Without studying at LMA, I genuinely believe I wouldn’t know the key factors of the industry, how to collaborate and have the knowledge and experience to lead me where I am today.”

Harvey Shaw Digital Film & TV Production Graduate “The fact that my degree in Musical Theatre at LMA was largely performance based, meant I got the chance to perform in some of the best Theatres across Liverpool. Even though I have graduated, I am still part of the LMA Choir. We have had amazing opportunities like performing on X-Factor, Pitch Battle and with Robbie Williams in his Hyde Park sell out gig. I absolutely loved my time at LMA. It is a family forever.”

Joel Cornwall Musical Theatre Graduate

“I loved my time at LMA and working with such a high calibre of tutors who were all from industry, was amazing. The masterclasses that we attended were world class. Imelda Staunton, Ken Loach, Robbie Williams, John Bishop, Mark Womack and Robert Farquhar are just a few of the names that visited us.

“LMA is so connected to industry through the workshops and live briefs. Studying here has given me the skills and tools necessary to make it in the gaming sector. Whilst I was in my final year, we were required to work for a client, this led me to my first industry-based job working for Just Play, creating their virtual space and marketing their new building. Since then I’ve worked as a Gaming User Interface Artist for International, Hobo Ltd. The networking and collaboration skills I gained at LMA made this all possible and I’m currently working as a freelance tutor at LMA, training the next generation of Digital Games Artists.”

Darren Caveney Digital Games Art Graduate

Hayley Smitton Acting Graduate

OPPORTUNITIES Studying at LMA opens up a world of exciting experiences both through the courses on offer and also outside the institution too. LMA’s close links with key figures in the entertainment industry mean our undergraduates are in an ideal position to take advantage of relevant opportunities. Recent opportunities include five Film & TV graduates starting full time contracts, working on a major production with Netflix and LMA actors being cast in the awardwinning Jimmy McGovern TV series ‘Tme’ starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. And the LMA Choir, made up of both past and present students, was selected as one of Robbie Williams’ final four acts on The X Factor, with them taking to the stage during the live shows. Having built a strong connection with the choir, he then invited them to perform with him at his sold-out British Summer Time concert at Hyde Park.
