At just 24-years-old, Rafa Nadal is considered one of the giants of the tennis scene and is currently ranked No. 1 in the world. He has won eight Grand Slam singles titles, the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles, a record 18 ATP World Tour Masters, 1,000 tournaments and was part of the Spanish Davis Cup team that won the finals in 2004, 2008 and 2009. Nadal was ranked World No. 2, behind Roger Federer for an astonishing 160 consecutive weeks before earning the position of No. 1. He held this ranking from 18 August 2008 to 5 July 2009 before regaining it on 7 June 2010 after winning his fifth French Open title. His success on clay has earned him the nickname “The King of Clay”, and has seen him heralded by some as the greatest clay court player ever. His chief rival is Roger Federer, an undisputed tennis master and they have been competing against each other since 2004. This rivalry has played a significant part in both of their careers and they are the only men in the open era who have played each other in seven Grand Slam finals, with

Nadal winning five times out of seven. Three of these five wins were on clay, his preferred surface, although he has beaten Federer twice on a non-clay surface: firstly in Wimbledon 2008 and then in the Australian Open 2009. Their epic Wimbledon final clash in 2008 has been cited by some tennis experts as the greatest match of all time. Rafael Nadal was born in Manacor, Majorca in June 1986. His uncle, Toni Nadal, a former professional tennis player, introduced him to tennis when he was three and has been coaching him ever since. At age eight, Nadal won an under-12 regional tennis championship at a time when he was also a promising football player. This made his uncle intensify his training schedule, getting Nadal to play left-handed− an advantage in tennis (even though he writes with his right hand). When Nadal was 12, he won the Spanish and European tennis titles for his age group and was constantly playing tennis and football. Something had to give, and Nadal’s father made him choose between the sports so that his schooling would not suffer. Nadal said: “I chose tennis. Football had to stop straight away.”

Nadal generally plays an aggressive, behind-the-baseline game founded on heavy topspin groundstrokes, consistency, speedy footwork, and tenacious court coverage. Known for his athleticism and speed, Nadal hits well on the run, constructing winning plays from seemingly defensive positions. Nadal’s serve is often considered a weak point in his game, however, his mental strength and strategic approach to the game are key to his success. Regardless of what the scoreboard states, he is singularly focused on winning the current point and gaining an advantage. Nadal can also assess factors including court surface, weather conditions, and the other player’s tactics in order to adjust his own play to the conditions he is facing.

Nadal himself has admitted that the physical demands faced on the hard courts place ATP Tour players at risk of damaging themselves. Although much is known about his tennis ability, a lesser-known fact is his philanthropic spirit and his use of his celebrity status to positively influence the world in which he lives. He set up the Rafa Nadal Foundation as a private, non-profit making organisation whose principal objective is social assistance and co-operation towards development. Within these broad

aims, the more specific mission of his organisation is the promotion of education and sport as tools for the integration of individuals in situations of social marginalisation, placing special emphasis on children and young people. One such project that he has been involved in is the Anantapur School in India. This project arose from the collaboration between the Rafa Nadal Foundation and the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, and consists of the construction and maintenance of a school and a three-court tennis training centre; to improve the future opportunities and quality of life of 150 boys and girls in Anantapur. The children will receive educational support in English and mathematics, reinforced with training in computer skills in order to improve their integral education through sport. The project also contemplates nutritional and healthcare cover for the beneficiary students, in order to supplement their nutritional and medical needs. When asked about his Foundation, Nadal commented: “I feel like a privileged and lucky person who works doing what I like most. I’ve had unique experiences travelling around the world and seeing many people who needed help. I believe that this is the first step to put into practice our help through the foundation.” Family-oriented, philanthropic and already a legendary tennis player, what’s next for Nadal? He still has a long way to go to equal Federer’s record of 16 individual Grand Slams, however, should his body hold up to the demands of the game, we are confident that he will do his best to challenge his record.

After being so well received as a concept vehicle, the 918 has recently been confirmed as a production car, receiving a lot of press attention because of its performance combined with its green credentials. Powered by a 500bhp V8 engine, partnered with 3 electric motors producing 218bhp, the 918 is able to accelerate from 0 - 60 in 3.2 seconds whilst achieving fuel consumption figures of 94 mpg. The transmission is a 7-speed gearbox coupled to Porsche’s own (PDK) double clutch system delivering power to the rear axle. The two electric motors drive the front wheels directly through a fixed ratio while a third electric motor is connected to the transmission and gives additional power to the rear wheels. The 918 Spyder offers 4 different running modes, E-Drive allows the car to run under battery power alone, using the rear electric motor only, giving a range of 16 miles (26 km), then there are the three hybrid modes, Hybrid, Sport and Race. The hybrid modes use both the engine and electric motors to provide the desired levels of economy and performance. In Race mode a push-to-pass button is available to deliver additional electrical power.

Ferrari’s new extreme V12 Berlinetta, the 599 GTO, delivered a lap time of just 1 minute and 24 seconds at Fiorano, making it the fastest road-going model in the Company’s history. This limited-edition special series of just 599 models is the new pinnacle of Prancing Horse sportiness and has benefited to an enormous degree from making the transition of introducing technological advances from the track. the Maranello engineers’ experience in the development of the 599XX, the prototype experimental car of which, as its legendary moniker suggests, the 599 GTO is the road-homologated version. In the past, only the very special Ferraris have been worthy of the GTO badge and this car is no exception. The 6 litre V12 rear wheel drive engine produces 670 bhp launching the car off the line to 60 mph in 3.35 seconds and onto a top speed of 210mph. At a cost of £300,000 there are no longer any available to order with all 599 models already assigned to many of the world’s car collectors and enthusiasts.

The Reventon lights

With its Italian rival Ferrari launching the 458 (featured in LLTD issue 23), Lamborghini has taken the already impressive Gallardo 560-4 and shaved off a few pounds, added some power and created the LP 570-4 Superleggera. By removing some 70kg and squeezing 10bhp more out of the fabulous 5.2 litre V10, the Superleggera is capable of accelerating from 0-62 in 3.4 seconds, 0-124mph in 10.2 seconds and generating a top speed in the region of 200mph. The flagship Gallardo had been improved all over, not just with added performance but with new interior / exterior styling and an improved soundtrack.

This added performance does come at a cost, at 28,000 more than the standard car, the exclusivity of owning an LP-570 will set you back £178,000. Interestingly this is

Often imitated, the Rolex Submariner is perceived as a classic and a widely recognised luxury product both in looks and performance. The watch has been part of expeditions both at sea and overland in the Antarctic (withstanding temperatures of 45 degrees below zero Celsius) and has featured in eleven James Bond films. The Submariner model went into production in 1953, and was showcased at the Basel watch fair in 1954. The first Submariners were distinctive as they didn’t have the trademark “cathedral”/”Mercedes” hands, which are strongly associated with the line. In fact, early submariners had straight “pencil” style hands. Few of the 6205 watches bear the name “Submariner” on the dial – a major distinction with modern Submariners. Some 6204 models have the Submariner logo printed below the centre pinion, while others have the logo blacked out, due to trademark issues connected with the name “Submariner” at the time they were released.

Early Submariners used either gilt or gilt/silver printing on glossy black dials. Radium paint was used for the luminous indices, which was changed to Tritium-infused paint in the early 60s. The next wave of Submariners, the 5512 and 5513, marked a significant change in the Rolex design. “Shoulders” were added to the crown side of the case providing protection for the winding/setting mechanism. The 5512 and 5513 were also fitted with the oversized crown, which became a feature of the Submariner line. In 1965-1966, Rolex discontinued gilt/silver or gilt dials, switching to white printing. The 1680 was the first Submariner to be equipped with a date complication, completing the transition from specialist tool watch to mass-market fashion accessory. Over the next 40-years, although the Submariner’s developed functionally and cosmetically, it’s still unmistakeably descended from the first Submariners of over 50-years ago.

Oeino, Candyscape II combines elements of 1930s glamour with 21st Century chic and efficiency. The 62-metre yacht was completed in November 2009 and accommodates 12 guests in 6 cabins and incorporates a host of intricate finishes from crystal chandeliers, leather hide floors and multiple wood finishes. Unique design features include a split-level owners and VIP suite on the main deck with a shared gymnasium; a media room with a 103-inch plasma screen and a circular glass lift that runs through the centre of the yacht, with glass floor surrounds on each floor.

The overall design concept / inspiration is based on ‘intelligent nature’ – a host of technologies that can respond to naturally occurring phenomena such as light, temperature and movement. The rear of the vast sundeck features a circular daybed that rotates automatically to the sun, to ensure guests are never in the shade. The interior lighting is dynamically controlled to work in harmony with the external environment and is designed to maintain each room as the ideal tranquil space or in a moment fill them with energy and vitality. A three-dimensional projector in a rosewood panelled study displays the position of the yacht anywhere in the globe and through a live satellite uplink, overlays real time weather patterns. The world’s first Segmented Sun Orrery – charts the hangs position of the planets in our solar systems from the ceiling of the media room. A one-off piece of artwork, inspired by the weather systems and the oceans currents, has been specially commissioned and features in the dining room. The technical areas have been carefully considered with a central corridor that runs the full length of the yacht, allowing crew to carry out maintenance work without going into any guest areas. Candyscape II has the ability to redirect clean air through the main funnel or to port and starboard when needed.

EMMA WATSON Last year was hugely significant for Emma Watson. She had her final teenage birthday, she started university – and became the highest paid female star in Hollywood. The actress is reported to have banked more in 2009 than some of Hollywood’s most established stars. Her income was estimated at £20million in a table of Hollywood’s top 40 earners compiled by Vanity Fair magazine and she charted at 14th overall, achieving the notable distinction of being the youngest person to appear on the list. I love playing Hermione and have made such good friends at Leavesden over the years, so of course it’s going to feel very weird it finally ending. In fact, she is quite candid about her plans for the future. “For the moment I’m really enjoying university life and feel that I still have so much to experience and so much to discover. I don’t have any definite plans for the future at the moment and that’s all part of growing up. But, I still love acting and hope to continue whether it be on stage or in film.” However, whichever direction she chooses her future is destined to be magical.

CHERISH Bius is known for its wholly distinctive furniture. Their bold experimentations in upholstered seating normally find their way into the homes of collectors and connoisseurs on both sides of the Atlantic. Though being so rarefied has never rested easily with the designers so, in the spirit of the times, they launched an online store – biusboutique – and designed cool little ottomans that ease into sturdy boxes to fly around the world – bringing joy from workshop door to... your door and mine. Or that’s the plan. And it’s a good one. Unlike their bespoke pieces, where their clients commission unique designs and wait several weeks for concept drawings, these ottomans can be studied in detail within seconds of reading this article. The website is designed to give a 360° view of any ottoman you like, and with a flick of the mouse you can engage a magnifying glass to see the craftsmanship and texture in detail. You can view them in a room setting to envisage their scale and how well they sit in an environment. Not being people in a rush the designers want you to stop rushing too.

The designers’ philosophy is that objects in our homes should provide enormous pleasure and evoke strong emotions. Though inanimate, a bius piece has a soulful presence and it’s possible to understand how their owners can grow so attached. So who designs them? Mary Little and Peter Wheeler met in the early eighties when he was successfully designing products for high volume manufacturers and she was just coming out of art college with a folio full of outrageous ideas. After she went through the process of making mistakes, taking many knocks, working abroad and gaining valuable experience they finally got their professional act together. They formed bius in London and began taking commissions to design and build furniture for public arts projects and for high-end residential clients. They established a name on the gallery circuit in the contemporary craft field, which North Americans in particular value highly. By 2001 a prominent D.C. collector had encouraged them to move to the U.S. The studio is now based in leafy Connecticut, north east of New York, where all along the Eastern Seaboard from Boston to Miami there is a strong appreciation for craftsmanship and distinctive bespoke furniture. From here they’ve also returned to Peter’s roots and are designing for North American manufacturers.

They both have a strong affinity for textiles and love collaborating with artists and craftsmen. Luna is in a fabric created with Berkeley artist, Jean Cacicedo. In Nipa Shibori they worked to bring out the life and sensuality of shibori fabric, hand-made by the Japanese master craftsmen Tsuyoshi Kuno and Hiroshi Murase. Elder has textured cotton peeping out of carefully positioned slits in the asymmetric, flowing seams. Head Chef, Jamie Hodson has worked with the likes of Marco Pierre White recently dedicated some time to finding out which dish his guests were attracted to the most and after recently selling over 700 servings of their famous scallops in just one month, the research was conclusive – the scallops are most definitely a crowd pleaser, with ‘posh’ fish and chips and Atlantic Snow Crab claiming second and third place respectively. The restaurant which prides itself in offering its many guests the option to choose whatever fish they desire (they will ask their fishermen to catch it especially for you!), is delighted that a light hearted bit of research has


ended up being so revealing. Jamie says; “I love home cooked, traditional food and I try to offer our guests something really special. The menu we have is diverse as we do cater for vegetarians and meat eaters, but I’m glad to see that our sea food, the thing that we’re known for, is still as popular as ever”. The Crab at Chieveley boasts numerous awards and currently has two rosettes. It is also very proud of one single exclusive dish that is Jamie’s own creation – and what a dish it is, the Rainbow of Fish – which is Seabass butterflied so it is boneless but still kept in one piece. Thin layers of other fish are then layered up inside the Seabass with a layer of spinach separating each fish in the following order – Mackerel, Black Bream, Grey Mullet and sliced Smoked Salmon. It is then finished off with a Tiger Prawn and Crab Mousse through the centre, rolled and wrapped to seal in the moisture. SAND POLO Lloyds Property Group was proud once again to sponsor a team at the 3rd British Beach Polo Championships at Sandbanks.

Polo is arguably the oldest recorded team sport in history, with the first matches being played in Persia over 2,500 years ago. Today, polo is played in 80 countries and was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1939. Four polo matches took place on each day of the two-day event, held on the 9-10 July, with some of the finest polo players in the world taking to the sand. There were three players in each team. Number 1 was the striker, 2 the centre and 3 the back. Each game had four periods (chukkas) of 6 ½ minutes with intervals of four minutes after each period, except after the second period, where there is a six minute interval. The finale of each day’s play saw England, captained by the event’s Polo

Other spectacles during the event were an exhibition of camel polo (the first in Europe), Oakley International Beach Volleyball and the Charity Race between a Mercedes G Class and the fastest polo pony. Our Lloyds Property Group team were distinctive playing in their team colours of yellow and blue. The team was captained by Eden Ormerod, a player of 11-years experience. Eden who has a 7-goal handicap is currently playing at Druids Lodge, Wiltshire. He has represented young England (U21) and has since won a number of full England caps. Eden plays all year round and is one of the very best arena polo players in the world. Following an exciting event, Lloyds Property Group is looking forward to being part of the 2011 Championships.
