Message from Stand & Deliver Founder and President Steve Adubato, Ph.D. Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that the Stand & Deliver: Communication Tools for Tomorrow’s Leaders program is in its twenty-first year. Especially given the challenges we have all faced due to COVID-19, we truly appreciate the generosity of those who supported this year’s program. While we aren’t celebrating together in person, we are confident you will enjoy our virtual program and we hope to see everyone together in person next year. In the 2020–2021 school year, more than 300 young adults from over 20 non-profit organizations, as well as public and private schools in urban centers such as Newark, Paterson, Elizabeth and Union, have had the opportunity to gain the communication and leadership skills that are essential to their success. While the majority of our workshops took place remotely this year following CDC guidelines and recommendations, the students and workshop leaders were engaged and, as always, continued to truly inspire us. After 21 years, Stand & Deliver is still strong and growing, because our corporate, foundation, and individual supporters (highlighted in tonight’s ad journal) have invested in these talented young adults — some of whom will perform at this evening’s “21st Annual Night of Eloquence.” In addition, this evening we will also be recognizing our longtime Stand & Deliver sponsors for their ongoing support and for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of tomorrow’s leaders. They are as follows: The North Ward Center; PSEG Foundation; The Newark Board of Education; RWJBarnabas Health and TD Charitable Foundation. The Stand & Deliver team believes there is no greater leadership skill than the ability to communicate in a clear, concise and compassionate fashion. We are continually amazed by the leaps and bounds our students make each year working together with a talented group of workshop leaders and mentors. To all of our Stand & Deliver participants, congratulations on a great year and on your success at speaking and listening from the heart. We are all so proud of you! On behalf of the faculty, staff, but most of all, the participants in the Stand & Deliver program, I want to thank all of our funding partners and sponsors of Stand & Deliver for your generosity and support. Warmest regards,

Steve Adubato, Ph.D.

Stand & Deliver Mission Statement Stand & Deliver teaches our young adults to communicate with passion, preparing them for their future and giving them the tools necessary to succeed.

Stand & Deliver History In its initial year in 1999, Stand & Deliver was offered to 65 high school-age students from Catholic Community Services; Greater Newark Conservancy; New Community Corporation; La Casa de Don Pedro; Mary Lawn of the Oranges; Seton Hall Prep; St. Benedict’s Prep and the North Ward Center. Now in its 21st year, the 2020–2021 Stand & Deliver program provides leadership and communication skills training to over 300 middle and high school-age students at over 20 Greater Newark area locations. Since its inception, Stand & Deliver workshops have focused on such areas as social communication; the value of public speaking; preparing for speeches and recognizing the connection between effective communication and leadership. The curriculum has now expanded to address the challenge of youth violence, conflict resolution and communicating policy ideas through advocacy efforts. For the 2020–2021 program, participants attended Stand & Deliver workshops, which include training in how to develop solutions to complex social problems. The majority of these sessions took place virtually, and the students had the opportunity to practice the art of engaging and communicating in a remote setting.

“ Those of us who love peace must learn to organize as effectively as those who love war.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Wherever you’re going, we’re here to get you there. Each person we meet, each patient we treat, each family we care for — becomes a part of our community. That means listening and getting to know them as a person to deliver a more personalized experience. Because we know that health care goes beyond visits and procedures. It’s about building trust and being a trusted partner in wellness and beyond. We are Virtua Health. And we’re here for good.
