Study Abroad AT MIAMI UNIVERSITY

The world is your classroom

2013-2014

Why study abroad? IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A NEW CULTURE. PREPARE TO COMPETE IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. There are few experiences that will help you develop personally, academically and professionally like study abroad. Students who study abroad report increased self-confidence, independence, and flexibility following their education abroad experience, not to mention improved cross-cultural communication skills. You will navigate new cultures and environments, which will result in the knowledge that you can face challenges head on! Studying abroad also provides the opportunity to study from a new perspective or focus in other areas of interest. At Miami, you can use study abroad to complete major, minor, or Miami Plan requirements while taking courses that encourage you to learn or think in a new and exciting way, or experience the content firsthand! The result? Knowledge, skills and international experience employers are looking for in potential employees entering the increasing global economy.

EYE OPENING

life-changing MIAMI IS YOUR PASSPORT TO GLOBAL ADVENTURES

Brandon Patterson, Class of 2014

Major: Political Science & Strategic Communication

“It’s hard to explain how much going abroad does shape or mould you, but it has changed my entire viewpoint on the world. I’m just so excited to start the next chapter of my life. Before, I was nervous and apprehensive, wondering if it was going to work out, and now I know I can do this, I can go wherever my job needs me to go and I can meet new people, get into that city’s culture, just because of what I learned going abroad.”

Michelle Ludwin, Class of 2013

Major: Marketing and Journalism Minor: Decision Science

“The second you cross borders into a different country, the culture and atmosphere changes completely. Between the languages, the people, the architecture and the food you feel as if you walked into a new world. It is amazing how all of these countries have been able to hold onto long standing traditions and embrace their heritage.”

A NATIONAL LEADER IN STUDY ABROAD Miami consistently ranks among the top universities in the nation for the number of students studying abroad. No matter your major, you’re welcome to join the more than 1,500 Miami students each year who study abroad.

MIAMI GIVES YOU

a world of options! YOU ARE SURE TO FIND A PROGRAM THAT FITS YOUR ACADEMIC NEEDS, SCHEDULE AND BUDGET.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS RANGE FROM A WEEK LONG WORKSHOP TO A FULL YEAR EXCHANGE PROGRAM. Many Miami students choose Faculty-led Study Abroad and Study Away Programs all over the world to complete major, minor and capstone requirements. Miami faculty members teach the courses and students receive Miami University academic credit. Students will pay tuition, fees and associated program fees to Miami on a per-credit-hour basis as if they were at the Oxford campus. Most faculty-led programs take place during Summer or Winter term. At Miami University’s Dolibois Euorpean Center in Luxembourg (MUDEC) in the heart of Europe, students can choose from a variety of classes that count towards thematic sequences and some Miami Plan foundation requirements. Classes are taught by European and Ohio-based Miami faculty members. Students who participate in the MUDEC Program pay Miami University for tuition, fees, housing and meals. Exchange Programs allow Miami students to exchange places with a student from another university. More than 300 international universities are accessible to Miami students through exchange partnerships. On an exchange program, students pay Miami tuition and fees. Depending on the program, room and board costs can be paid to Miami or to the host university directly. In Third-Party Provider Programs, students will directly enroll in another university or through international education organizations and earn transfer credit for the coursework completed during the program. These programs can offer expansive academic and geographic options that Miami alone cannot offer. Students pay fees for tuition, housing and excursions directly to the provider.

Message from the Assistant Provost Miami University does not limit its vision to the view from Oxford, Ohio. Miami ventures beyond the horizon because future leaders will tread in the global community. We encourage study abroad to enrich the classroom experience by providing students with transformative and immersive education abroad experiences. Students choose to study abroad for many reasons – language acquisition, understanding their own personal culture and identity, increased self-confidence and self-reliance, gaining a new perspective, or to enhance an academic interest. These are what is at the core of the education abroad experience, but the results can be much more as relationships are built around the world and people come together to make our world a stronger place. Discover all that Miami University has to offer in opportunities for study abroad – you won’t be disappointed.
