The Reinvention of UNISA SBL Alumni Association


Context The Alumni Association (1997 - 1979) was of the opinion that in the context of the many emerging challenges and discontinuities facing our nation, success, to a large degree will depend on committed leadership across all spheres of our society. The Association subscribed to Jaworski’s (1998) overarching principle of servant leadership, serving with compassion and heart and recognising that the only true authority for this new leadership era is that it enriches participants and empowers rather than diminishes them.


Context The Association encouraged transformational leadership of strong commitment and broad visionary ideas. It implied creative rather than reactive leadership, with the capacity to imagine a great community, like South Africa or a great region such as the entire African continent and the capacity to help make greatness like the African Renaissance happen. The Association embraced the notion that they, as leaders, were not bound by current circumstances but that they could literally choose the kind of community, the kind of world that they wanted to live in.

They took the stand that they were the future of transformational leadership in South Africa.

Declaration of Possibility The Association ledership declared the possibility that South Africa is and would be a world model of a reconciled nation. Accordingly, they pledged themselves to bridgebuilding and reconciliation within the leadership context that transformational leaders make the impossible happen.


The Alumni were invited TO BUY IN AND JOIN THE STAND In order to proactively pursue the strategic intent, the SBL sought new and vibrant interaction with its Alumni in the marketplace. As part of this process, the Alumni Association required members, who were willing to support and enact the important role of leadership, contributed to the advancement of the SBL and who were passionate about continuous learning and self-development.


Support and commitment from Alumni INVITED Alumni were encouraged to join the association by completing the Application for Membership form and in so doing, to become a partner in the future of the SBL and its Alumni Association. Alumni were invited to support and participate to make a real impact in the business world and communities in South Africa.


Support and commitment from Alumni PROLOGUE In spite of the effort and initial buy-in by the leadership of the Alumni Association, basically because of the termination of the Chairmanship after the 2 year cycle – the enthusiasm of the new leadership waned very quickly (the NIH syndrome). This confirms that, no matter how noble the vision, it requires the passion of a champion leader to mobilise and sustain the support up to critical mass and beyond. The end-state was the return to laissez fare and more of the same lethargy.
