Llano Grande Garden Club What started out as a casual plants and gardening conversation ended up birthing the Llano Grande Garden Club. The first meeting was held in July 2017 with 10 attendees and from those small beginnings much has been accomplished from bringing in a variety of expert speakers, field trips to explore area attractions, potted plants in public areas of the park and the Butterfly Garden Project. Club members vary in their level of plant and garden knowledge, however no experience is necessary to be a member and there is no membership fee. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month in Llano Hall (check the monthly calendar for times). If interested come to the monthly meeting. In between meetings the Club has taken a variety of field trips to local attractions such as Quinta Mazatlan, Hilltop Gardens, and local nurseries-Heep's LRGV Native Plant Nursery in Harlingen and Dyer Nursery in Weslaco. When this Club is not out in the garden or having fun doing something else, they share photos and interesting articles in their private Facebook group Llano Grande Garden Club. This group is exclusive to residents of Llano Grande Resort and those who request to join will be required to answer a few questions before being added to the group.

One of my biggest takeaways from participating in the Llano Garden Club butterfly garden project is how very much work it is to see a vision such as this become a reality. From the planning to inception it is not just the waving of a magic wand! A group of determined people with a common goal can make things happen. - Lizzie Sheehan Being part of the Garden Club at Llano Grande has given me insight into native  plants in South Texas including their care and growth.  The correct watering cycle and particular pests associated with the plants was the most helpful. - Kay Zemlicka

After months of preparation, work and care, the Garden Club invites all residents of Llano Grande Resort to attend our Butterfly Garden Blessing on Sunday, December 9th at 2pm. The Garden is located in the West at Zoila Circle and Zoila Ave.

Shufflers News Getting to Know Our Shufflers Clancy and Marion MacDonald are from Thompson, Manitoba. When at boarding schools, Marion’s family invited Clancy to join them for a holiday celebration since he was alone.  They were married 35 years ago and have two daughters.  Clancy worked in Human Resources for a mining company.  Marion was a chef and cooking instructor.  They both enjoy fishing and being on the water.  Marion has her own canoe and paddle boat.  Clancy likes boats, but only the ones that are motorized.  (There’s a story here I bet!)   Clancy’s parents came to Llano Grande for one season buying a mobile at 124 Buena Vista and then his father died.  His mother, Toby continued spending winters here for many years.  Clancy and Marion came for a holiday each winter and live on their own now that Toby can no longer travel.  She is in a care home now.  Marion’s parents both passed away this summer. The MacDonalds are very active volunteers in shuffling.  They teach “Learning How to Shuffle” classes and Clancy gives strategy ideas to help shufflers improve their games.  He is very encouraging to others and invites anyone watching our local games to join in.  Both are competitive tournament players winning many trophies every year, amassing over 400 points each. Since they do not have room for all the trophies won, they pass them on to others to “recycle” to be used elsewhere, keeping special ones such as the Tournament of Champions plaque and memorial trophies.  This season

they earned two in the first two tournaments along with three other winning pairs from our Park.  They know many Winter Texans in other parks due to their contributions to the Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association (R.G.V.S.A.) They attend major events and meetings.  Marion, with Louise McElrea ran E.V.S.A  (Saturday shuffling) for a long time.   Continuing the tradition of family members settling in our park, Marion’s sister and brother-in-law have joined the Llano Grande family.  They are already known to us shufflers from past visits to the MacDonalds and joining us at our socials. Many Winter Texans have the mistaken concept that shuffleboard is an “old folks” game.  For some it is.  There are 94-yearold folks and older who still play, but the couples featured here are more than three decades younger and are fired up about shuffling.  Come out to the courts at 12:30 P.M. any Monday, Wednesday or Friday with two nickels; join us and see why they love it so!
