2009 ANNUAL REPORT

The mission of the YMCA of Greater Providence is to build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, through programs, services and relationships that are based upon our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

About the YMCA of Greater Providence The YMCA of Greater Providence is a nonprofit organization serving communities throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts with the mission to help each individual build a healthy spirit, mind, and body through programs based on the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The YMCA of Greater Providence reaches individuals through its eight branches and Camp Fuller resident camp as well as through community-based programming.

Leadership Report Throughout 2009, the YMCA of Greater Providence followed up on its promise to meet critical community needs in the areas of health and wellbeing, education, family strengthening, and child care. Our urban programs grew, impacting even more children and families in our capital city as did our efforts to provide support and nurturing for individuals faced with chronic illness like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s across the state. Here are some of the highlights from our work during the past year: We provided nearly $3.1 million in free, subsidized or sponsored programs. These funds benefit children, families, and individuals through memberships, child care, camp scholarships, services and activities like our statewide efforts to improve the quality of life for people living with and affected by chronic illness. Nearly 75,000 people participated in YMCA activities through membership and programs that offer physical and emotional wellness to combat the challenges of leading a healthy lifestyle. Providence Youth Services, our inner-city program branch, served nearly 2,000 children and parents with offerings including family literacy, gardening, homework club, nutrition education, enrichment activities, and case management referrals to other organizations. Our Y On the Move mobile outreach program engaged hundreds of young people in physical games and activities that encouraged them to lead more active, healthy lives. In October, the Kent County YMCA broke ground on a $3.2 million Expansion Project called Building Community, Changing Lives. The goal is to create a facility better able to serve the critical needs of the community with a particular emphasis on children and families. A Family Center, Kids Gym, Community Room, fully accessible Welcome Center, and improved Health and Wellness Centers are all part of the new building design. The generous support of the Champlin Foundations was essential to getting this project underway. Healthy Kids Day was a huge success this year, with 2,250 families visiting our Ys to participate in activities that will help them on their path to lead healthy lifestyles. All of the events were free and open to the public.

Our child care and camp programs impacted the lives of 7,340 children with positive, confidence-building experiences that will help them become the leaders of tomorrow. Our before and after school programs offer academic, social, and physical enrichment activities that fill the gaps often found in our public school systems. Camp Fuller, the Y’s resident camp, is the third oldest in the country and delivers excellent programs that give children and young adults experiences and memories that last a lifetime. The YMCA of Greater Providence expanded initiatives to support people affected by chronic illness and their families. Our LIVESTRONG at the YMCA cancer survivorship program grew at all 7 full-service branches as did efforts to reach individuals facing challenges brought on by Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease. Statewide advocacy efforts helped to raise awareness of numerous health and education-related issues, bringing positive change in areas including menu labeling, exercise breaks in schools, as well as child care nutrition and physical activity. The YMCA of Greater Providence continues to be a leader in addressing community issues that impact the daily lives of our constituents. Swimming and water safety lessons were taught to more than 500 children during Splash Week in April. This annual community awareness activity helps ensure that summers in and around our pools and beaches are safe and enjoyable. The efforts of the YMCA to improve people’s lives garnered new funding from sources as varied as the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation, Amgen, the Department of Defense and the KaBoom! Foundation. Similarly, partnerships were developed with local organizations like John Hope Settlement House, Shape Up RI, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, Butler Hospital, RI Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse, Dorcas Place, and the Rhode Island Department of Health. All of these efforts would not be possible without the tireless efforts of our staff, members, donors, and volunteers who live the mission of the Y every day. Together we are working together to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. And we pledge to continue to do so long into the future.

“Tai Chi and pool therapy helped me through depression and chronic pain. I felt 75% better in 8 weeks.”

– YMCA Program Participant

Supporting people living with chronic illness The YMCA of Greater Providence is committed to providing programs and services that support individuals and families coping with chronic illnesses like Alzheimer’s, arthritis, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, and Parkinson’s disease. Nearly one in two Americans suffers from some type of chronic illness. The impact goes well beyond the physical effects with long-term emotional impact that extends to family and friends. Programs are often offered in collaboration with medical professionals, hospitals, and universities. They offer a wide range of support from physical activities to emotional encouragement and social connections. For example, through our partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Rhode Island, YMCAs offer health and wellness programs for individuals facing the challenges associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The collaboration focuses on improving quality of life for participants as they learn ways to compensate for changes in memory through cognitive enhancement activities, physical and mental stimulation, social interaction, camaraderie and just plain fun. At the same time, family members and care partners are able to pursue their own interests while their loved ones are engaged in enjoyable and meaningful activities with the guidance of a trained facilitator. The Alzheimer’s program is just one of the many opportunities we offer to support people living with chronic illness, all part of our mission to provide healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

“When I first joined with financial aid I was homeless and cold. It was winter and I showered here and changed my clothes. Since then I got sober and got in shape and got married and work full time – thanks for the help when I needed it.”

– YMCA Financial Assistance Recipient

Helping people help themselves At the YMCA, health and wellness is more than just exercise. It means helping people build their strength - spiritually, physically, and mentally - with dignity and respect, particularly when they are facing difficult times. Living in a state with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, Rhode Islanders are particularly challenged with the struggle to make ends meet and provide for themselves and their families. Although belonging to the YMCA may not seem like a necessity, giving up a YMCA membership for financial reasons would mean giving up a chance to be healthy, to feel better, to have quality, reliable child care to relieve stress, and to connect with others. Through our Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fund, the YMCA is able to provide financial assistance to individuals and families who might not be able to afford to participate in programs and services. Last year, the YMCA of Greater Providence provided nearly $3.1 million in free, subsidized, or sponsored programs. Neighbors Helping Neighbors supports memberships, child care, camp scholarships, and a wide range of health and wellness activities open to the entire community. The demand last year was great and continues to grow. As a result, our fundraising efforts have increased as well. And we have been thrilled with the response we’ve received from our members, donors, and the community-atlarge. So many people gave so generously to support their neighbors and the mission of the YMCA. And every dollar that we raise goes directly back to the people who need it most. You can be confident that your gift to the YMCA is put to good use.

“I believe that the YMCA adds a new dimension to the lives of the children in my community, providing opportunities for my kids that they would have never had.  The YMCA has been a godsend.  I don’t think the YMCA will ever realize the impact it has had on the lives of so many children and families.”

– Public School Official

Providing a safe haven for children For decades, the YMCA has provided a safe, fun environment for children participating in before and after school programs and summer enrichment. These programs engage children in both educational and physical activities to help them build strong spirit, mind, and body. Living in a hectic, fast-paced world, parents often have to make difficult decisions about where their children spend their out-of-school time. They feel confident and comfortable knowing that they can rely on the YMCA to help address this need. And for parents who struggle to make ends meet, financial assistance from the YMCA provides reduced and subsidized child care to ensure that families always have an opportunity to leave their children in good hands. The YMCA also shines as a collaborative partner in working with school departments and other child-focused organizations across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Our Providence Youth Services branch, for example, works closely with schools and a wide range of social service agencies to provide comprehensive care and case management for children and families through a federally funded Full Service Community Schools grant. There is still a great need, particularly in our urban communities, for quality enrichment programs. But the YMCA is leading the way by engaging more children, families, and community partners in educational and health-related initiatives every day.
