LANA’s
11th ANNUAL HOBO CLASSIC February 8-9, 2019 Stanislaus County Fairground Turlock, California
Kathy Nichols Hobo Show Superintendent THANK
YOU!
Thank you volunteers for your time and energy Thank you sponsors for your generous support Thank you exhibitors for coming to the show Thank you friends for coming to watch and support our camelid community, the show, and LANA
!
I would like to express my deep gratitude and heart-felt thanks to every one involved with the 2019 Hobo Classic Show. Without the help of the many amazing volunteers, LANA’s Hobo Classic would not have run as smoothly as it did. Of course there were a few behind the scene hiccups. With a little brain storming, we were able to problem solve and persevere. Thank you to Patti Morgan and Margaret Drew for being our judges this year. With the financial contributions from our awesome sponsors, LANA is able to put this show on every year. Your generosity is truly appreciated. And without the exhibitors, there wouldn’t be a reason to hold a show. To those who traveled many miles and braved snow and icy roads and to those who live near by, thank you for participating in the show. There were nineteen ranches, two 4-H clubs, and sixty animals in attendance. While the entries were down for finished products, there was a large increase in shorn fleece. Most halter classes had enough entries for full divisions. As always, the performance classes were popular with 101 entries. Thank you to our LANA friends for coming to watch, help out, visit and support LANA and the Hobo show. Thank you Joy Pedroni and Stephanie Pedroni for the many, many hats that you wore while taking on more necessary tasks. Thank you Sue Rich and the Orange Blossom 4-H Moms for organizing another successful Silent Auction. More thanks to Sue for conducting the annual membership meeting and the dessert auction. Thank you LANA Board of Directors for donating the delicious desserts. If you have any ideas to share for next year, please send us an email. I look forward to the 2020 LANA Hobo Classic. Kathy 2

Lifetime Achievement Award Winners
ROB & SUZI POLLARD Dr. Rob Pollard, DVM, earned his veterinary degree from the University of California at Davis in 1970. As a student making the rounds with Dr. Murray Fowler for the first time, Rob realized that he would be well served to continue making the rounds with the man who would become his mentor. He credits Dr. Fowler with teaching him how to be creative and resourceful when solving health issues for animals. Also as a student at Davis, he visited a help station on the coast where met Suzi. He found Suzi working with marine wildlife and so their lifelong fascination with and service to exotic mammals began. Upon Rob’s graduation, he and his new wife relocated to Sonora, CA, and began to rehabilitate injured or ill wildlife. Suzi’s dedication flowed from her great empathy for all living things. And so their practice took roots. Neighbors to the Pollards acquired llamas, and the new pasture inhabitants just a fence over became the new fasciation for the wildlife rescuers. Once again, Dr. Pollard turned back to his UC Davis mentor, Dr. Fowler, and Rob intensified his study of camelids. Eventually, Rob was sent to Bolivia to screen importations. They trekked all over the countryside and learned a great deal about reproduction and llama medicine from local long-time llama owners. Over time, Dr. Pollard gained a national reputation regarding his llama niche, and Suzi became known as a premier savior of at-risk cria and expert on assisting babies with latching onto their mothers in order to nurse. High dollar alpaca were temporarily placed at the Pollards to ensure a healthy birth and a good start with lactation. Suzi had endless energy and was generous with her time. She established routines with Rob that included 30 minute checks on llamas through the night to increase the odds of survival. And the two maintained a strong partnership for many years. Their own herd grew to over 60 animals at one point. Dr.Pollard was a frequent speaker on veterinary panels during the years when LANA held Expo’s and Cal-ILA held annual meetings at the Davis Veterinary School. He became well known for his focus on homeopathic remedies and herbals.

! MAUREEN MACEDO Adult Follow Me Award Winner Maureen has been a long-time supporter of LANA and the camelid community. She serves on boards and committees, both llama and alpaca, for different organizations. Maureen, along with her husband Larry, host performance shows on their ranch and will be hosting the 2019 LANA Kids & Camelids Show in April. She has helped at previous Kids & Camelids show as a fleece evaluator, giving the youth exhibitors a critique of their animals’ fleece. LANA members have benefited from Maureen’s fleece expertise. She instructed at a fleece clinic on sorting llama and alpaca fleece, and preparing it for show. She also taught a wet felting clinic on how to make a felted bowl. She is an ALSA fiber judge and is currently work on her ALSA certification for halter and performance (both llama and alpaca) and an AOA accredited spin-off judge. When asked how they got started in alpacas, Maureen’s reply was “it was twofold: one was that our girls had graduated from 4H and FFA but Larry & I wanted livestock of some kind. I enjoy spinning wool and other fibers, but grew up with sheep and goats and wanted to try something different. Our youngest daughter was working in a yarn store and came home extolling the virtues of alpaca yarn. Her words were : Alpaca yarn is so soft and nice, but it’s expensive. We’ve got to find a way to get it cheaper.” Maureen and Larry have been raising alpacas and llamas for twelve years. Their ranch, Macedo’s Mini Acre, is located in Turlock, California, with a current herd of 80 alpacas and 5 llamas. They have been and continue to be mentors to many grateful alpaca owners. 7
ETHAN BUSHA LANA Youth Citizenship Award Winner
! The Hobo Show Committee selected Ethan for this award for his polite and respectful behavior while helping out with the show.
This award recognizes the youth who best excels in the following areas in and out of the show ring: Sportsmanship demonstrated by a positive attitude regardless of placement; encouragement to peers and adults; professional behavior during the show that exemplifies the goals and ideals of LANA and the lama industry; appearance of themselves and their animals during the show and free time; demeanor as youth representatives of the lama community to the show, the public, and others within the lama community. The judge, show superintendent, or any board member can determine who receives the award. The recipient should be observed willingly helping out in the areas mentioned above. Examples of such actions would be: Helping other youths or adults not of their own family or 4-H/FFA club. Running ribbons or score cards. Helping to set up or clean up anywhere needed. Educating the public and others about llamas. (PR) 8

HOBO HISTORY ! In 2000, Dan and Marilyn Milton, Cris Jennings, Sherry Johnston, Greg and Esther Sue Sykes and Doug and Darlene Meyers purchased the Firecracker Sale and turned it into a non-profit organization to benefit the Llama Industry. The Miltons traveled to the Estes Park Wool Market and Llama Show, Missouri, the Ag Show in Tulare, CA, and OFFF in Canby, OR with extensive displays to promote all aspects of the llama industry. Dan and Marilyn gave seminars all over the country and donated the fees back to the organizations for scholarships, etc. They hosted two major llama auctions combined with shows in Roseberg, OR. They turned all profits back into the industry by educating, sponsoring events, giving scholarships and even supporting organizations such as LANA with a $5000 donation to sustain them. As sales on the West Coast were declining, the group needed another way of making money. Because shows were still popular, they decided that a show was the way to go. However, all desirable dates were taken so the Miltons conceived the idea of the Hobo Classic that could be held in the wintertime. Thus, grooming became “illegal” and to enforce that there were Hobo Cops and a jail. It grew from there to include an entire Hobo Town complete with a junk yard, a soup kitchen, a dock, a box car, out houses (all decorated in authentic hobo symbols) and a perpetual yard sale where those who didn’t have costumes could get themselves in the spirit of things. For the first several years here were over 300 llamas in attendance at the shows. It started Friday evening and continued to the end of the day on Sunday. There were many special events for all levels of performance with awards and cash prizes. The group sponsored sportsmanship and service awards, as well. In 2008, the Miltons purchased the Celebrity Show and they passed the Hobo show on to LANA. Since then, Stanislaus County Fairground has been the home to the Hobo Classic. The Moglers have been returning the spirit of the show back to its true Hobo roots. This year, there was a new sheriff in town (new superintendent). Her hope is to continue to make Hobo a destination show on the West Coast.

It’s not just a show, but a learning experience with verbal critique from the judge at the completion of the course and educational activities. The youth receive great prizes and every exhibitor goes home with a swag bag full of goodies. Please join LANA in Vacaville at the Fiesta Day parade. It’s a fun day sharing your llama or alpaca with the public and visiting with your camelid community 96
