Andrea and Chene Mogler Hobo Show Superintendents
!
WOW! What can we say? Hobo 2018 was amazing! Chene and I are so grateful to everyone who helped make this the best show we have been superintendents for yet. I know we got off to a late start Saturday morning, but I am still blown away by all the new exhibitors we had show up day of the show. It was exciting to see so many new faces and llamas. I am horrible at remembering names, so we are hoping to see all our new friends and their critters again soon. I hope everyone got a chance to see our showmanship class as it was quite impressive having all the youth and adults out in the ring at the same time. As your superintendents it was very gratifying to see so many people hanging out and having fun all weekend. Fun has always been our number one goal; I think we accomplished that.
!
Our list of people to thank grew beyond the wanted posters I had posted around. People were coming up to us and asking, what can I do? How can I help? To everyone who helped out in any way with the show THANK YOU! Chene and I couldn’t pull this off without you. I am pretty sure there is another article that thanks all of our volunteers and sponsors, so I just want to thank my family for all the behind the scenes work they did. Chene who spent his birthday weekend setting up the performance courses and running an amazing show, Lily who helped me Friday night set up all the back drops, tables and helped her dad and kept at it well past midnight, Pamela and Brittany who were the grunt laborers who cleaned up and tore down 2 the entire show.
!
We tried something new this year and offered shorn llama and shorn alpaca fleece classes as well as finished product classes. All the credit and appreciation goes to Barbie Carlson who had a vision and made it happen. We had a lot of beautiful entries across all three divisions. Our largest class was the experienced felted category with 12 entries!!! Finished product is something completely new to me, but I was inspired to attempt to make an entry or two for next year. I am really excited about the support these new classes had am looking forward to working with Barbie again to expand this area of the show. That being said, save your fleeces and make some items to enter!
!
Thank you to our wonderful judges Deb Yeagle and Tracy Weaver who were a pleasure to work with. Both judges were so patient as we scrambled Saturday morning to accommodate everyone and were great at explaining things along the way. I got to see first hand their passion, Deb with the impromptu alpaca clinic and Tracy with the finished product classes. They both were a wealth of information and fantastic at answering questions for me and our exhibitors.
!
It is with deep sadness to hear the passing of Ed McComb. Ed and his wife Arlene have been long-time sponsors and supporters of the LANA Hobo Show. This show has been dedicated in Ed’s memory. Chene and I thank you all again, we hope to see the show continue to grow. The Fairground is reserved for Feb. 2 - 3, 2019. Tell all your friends what a great time you had bumming around with all us Hobos in Turlock and invite them to join in our Mogler’s Madness. Much love, Andrea & Chene

! GEORGE CALDWELL Lifetime Achievement Award Winner George and his wife Christine live in Sonora, California. Their ranch has been home to Llamas of Circle Home since 1982. The Caldwells have provided a home for many years for several developmentally disabled adult women.
!
George has taken his llamas to many mental health and wellness events at UC Berkeley and around the Bay Area. Last March, George and his llamas went to Berkeley to participate in the Suicide Prevention & Awareness Walk. He feels that in the future llamas will play a big role in mental health therapy due to their gentle nature and calming effect.
From nursing homes to youth events, his llamas have made a positive impact on those who have met them. George offers hiking with llamas in Redwood Park in Oakland through the East Bay Recreational Park District. He has taught llama packing to a 4-H group and has donated fleece to the Llama Pack Project in Peru. Also known as Geo, he entertained the crowd at the LANA Awards Presentation with his South American adventures. One of his fascinating stories was about the exceptional view of the Milky Way from the Andes and how the stars form a mother llama and her cria. George has been a tireless proponent of llamas both in this country and South America. He has shared his love of these animals and the ambiance they create with countless people. He is a llama lover, a llama shaman.

! EILEEN DITSLER Hummdinger Award Winner Eileen bought her first llama in 1995 after a friend convinced her that hiking would be more enjoyable with someone else carrying the weight. She soon discovered showing and was attracted to the performance classes. Eileen enjoys training llamas for obstacles and driving. She believes a well-trained llama is part of a team. It has to do with trust, respect and responsibility. If you haven’t seen her show, she’s pretty darn good. Icehouse llamas have done well at the National level. She has trained and shown many National Champions. Eileen has been a long-time supporter of LANA and the llama community. She serves on boards and committees for different organizations as well as putting on her own show, Moonlight Madness. She has been a presenter at LANA Expo and at LANA events, including a driving clinic. Many drivers got the “driving bug” due to her. When she isn’t showing her own animals, she has graciously loaned them to other exhibitors, both youth and adult. She has been and continues to be a mentor to many grateful llama owners.
!
Eileen resides in San Dimas in sunny Southern California.

!
LISA LABENDEIRA Adult Follow Me Award Winner Lisa has served on the LANA Board of Directors and worked on the LANA newsletter. She was co-superintendent of the 2017 LANA Anniversary Party Show and has generously sponsored LANA shows. She has volunteered to be scorekeeper at numerous shows keeping accurate track of results and points. Lisa, her family and good friend Holly had put on fantastic performance shows for a couple of years. If you didn’t get a chance to participate in one, you missed out on something special.
!
Lisa has helped many families get started with llamas. She mentors and shares advice to youth and adults. Her expertise in driving has helped many rookies and experienced drivers too. Each year Lisa organizes a Christmas Parade group and her ranch hosts a llama dentistry day.
We thank Lisa for her continued support to LANA and the llama community.
CHRISTOPHER VARGA
!
Youth Follow Me Award Winner
Christopher Varga is a one of a kind. He is one of the most hard working and helpful people I know. In all the time that we have been showing, he always helps set up obstacles, take them down, and anything else that he possibly can. Without knowing it, he manages to set a good example and be a great role model for the other youth. The kind of person we all strive to be like. He has a huge heart and cares so much about his llama family. For all of those reasons, and many more, Christopher Varga is extremely deserving of the LANA Youth Follow Me award, and I am more than proud to call him my best friend. ~ Kayla Rogers 8

HOBO HISTORY ! ! In 2000, Dan and Marilyn Milton, Cris Jennings, Sherry Johnston, Greg and Esther Sue Sykes and Doug and Darlene Meyers purchased the Firecracker Sale and turned it into a non-profit organization to benefit the Llama Industry. The Miltons traveled to the Estes Park Wool Market and Llama Show, Missouri, the Ag Show in Tulare, CA, and OFFF in Canby, OR with extensive displays to promote all aspects of the llama industry. Dan and Marilyn gave seminars all over the country and donated the fees back to the organizations for scholarships, etc. They hosted two major llama auctions combined with shows in Roseberg, OR. They turned all profits back into the industry by educating, sponsoring events, giving scholarships and even supporting organizations such as LANA with a $5000 donation to sustain them. As sales on the West Coast were declining, the group needed another way of making money. Because shows were still popular, they decided that a show was the way to go. However, all desirable dates were taken so the Miltons conceived the idea of the Hobo Classic that could be held in the wintertime. Thus, grooming became “illegal” and to enforce that there were Hobo Cops and a jail. It grew from there to include an entire Hobo Town complete with a junk yard, a soup kitchen, a dock, a box car, out houses (all decorated in authentic hobo symbols) and a perpetual yard sale where those who didn’t have costumes could get themselves in the spirit of things. For the first several years there were over 300 llamas in attendance at the shows. It started Friday evening and continued to the end of the day on Sunday. There were many special events for all levels of performance with awards and cash prizes. The group sponsored sportsmanship and service awards, as well. In 2008, the Miltons purchased the Celebrity Show and they passed the Hobo show on to LANA. Since then, Stanislaus County Fairground has been the home to the Hobo Classic. The Moglers have been returning the spirit of the show back to its true Hobo roots. 11

!
The Llama Associa.on of North America (LANA) is ge7ng ready for an awesome Kids & Camelids Show this April, and we really hope you can make it! This leDer serves as a SAVE THE DATE! Please mark your calendars. We are trying a few different things:
!
1) We have a deadline to register for this show. Just to make sure that we have enough par.cipants to make the show a go, we need to hear from you by March 23, 2018. If enough kids are registered, then the Show Will Go On!!! If we have to cancel due to lack of par.cipa.on, we will let you know, but please don’t count on registering on site … although if the show is a go, we will let you! 2) Please feel free to bring a non-ALSA friend with you. Maybe someone who has never, ever shown a llama before but is curious, and we will give your friend a chance to take your animal through an obstacle course. 3) If the par.cipants would like, we will offer a Showmanship clinic just before that class.
!
As always, we will ask the judge to have a talk with you right aUer you and your animal finish each course so you and the judge remember the performance, and you can get some very specific take-aways. Par.cipants have told us they love this part.
!
Thanks to all of you who have par.cipated before, and we hope to see you all in April! 93

What a great turn out for the Hobo show. It was exciting to see so many exhibitors. Some of us “old timers” commented that this is how shows used to be. Thank you Hobo exhibitors for sharing your pictures for this newsletter. I apologize to those Grand and Res. Champions who were not pictured. Hope to see you all at the Party Performance Show and the youth, at the Kids & Camelids Show.
