Hobo Superintendents Chene and Andrea Mogler Third time is the charm, or at least that’s what Chene and I were hoping for going into the 2017 LANA Hobo Classic llama show. We have finally worked out a method to our madness as far as set up, take down and awards go. The tricky part this year was waiting to see if Mother Nature was willing to cooperate. California was getting drenched in record rain falls and Oregon saw an outrageous amount of snow.

! Lucky for us there was a break in the storm system and we had mild weather with a few rain drops and sunshine peeking through over the show weekend. Chene and I really appreciate all our diehard llama friends that braved the weather to join us in Turlock. First and foremost we want to thank you, the exhibitor. Without you bringing your animals and entering in all the classes we wouldn’t have a show. Second, we want to thank all of our generous sponsors who help to make the show happen. Third, I need to recognize my amazing volunteers who help us bring the show to life. Thanks going out to Joy Pedroni for handling all the entries and money ahead of time and for being the score keeper while at the show, Diane Salais for jumping in to be my gate keeper this year, Sue Rich and Orange Blossom 4-H for another outstanding job on the raffle, Greg Sykes for bringing my Hobo menu to life at the dinner, Maureen Macedo for sterilizing our food tins and storing them, Linda and Lee Beringsmith for taking over the hospitality table, Kelly Peters for helping load and unload all the obstacles and decorations and Charles Allen for making our Grand and Reserve awards. Fourth, I need to extend thanks and appreciation to our judges Barb Harris and Terese Evenson for coming out to judge our show, and hang out with all us bums and our llamas. Last year we heard a few complaints that our performances courses were too easy. Chene listened and created a wonderfully challenging set of obstacles and tasks for our exhibitors and their llamas and alpacas this year. I think he was successful. I didn’t hear any complaints and we even managed to challenge our master exhibitors. As superintendents it was fun watching some brand new youth at our show and joking around with old friends. Our goal is always fun first and to keep the show moving along. Thank you again for all your support and for letting us bring you another great Hobo show. Andrea & Chene Mogler

DR. PAT LONG Lifetime Achievement Award Winner After graduating from Kansas State University in 1976, Dr. Long spent five years in the United State Army as a veterinarian. Since then, Dr. Long has over 25 years of experience as an owner, breeder, and veterinarian to llamas and alpacas. He offers medical, surgical and consulting services through his mobile veterinary practice in Corvallis, Oregon (Camelid Health Services). Dr. Long has lectured extensively at producers’ groups, state and international veterinary meetings on llamas and alpacas, as well as many symposiums and conferences. He was a presenter at LANA Expo. He co-authored the book “Llama and Alpaca Neonatal Care” and authored peerreviewed articles on llama and alpaca care (from routine herd health and biochemistry reference ranges to cryptococcosis, hypothyroidism and causes for stillbirth), and many articles for Alpacas Magazine. Dr. Long has participated in several important screenings for ARI. Dr. Long is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Oregon Veterinary Association and is a board member of the Alpaca Research Foundation and the Morris Animal Foundation. He was the 2008 recipient of the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioner of the Year Award. Thank you Dr. Long for your dedication to the wellness and care of camelids and the education of their owners. Congratulations on your LANA Lifetime Achievement Award.

RICK AND MARY ADAMS Hummdinger Award Winner Rick and Mary Adams fell in love with llamas after a trip to Oregon in 2002. They bought their first two that year from Margaret Drew who mentored the couple in their early years. With Margaret’s coaxing, Mary showed in her first show the following spring and was hooked on showing. Since then, the Adams have competed nationwide and have returned home with many national championships building a reputable name in the llama industry. The Adams have been, and continue to be, valued supporters of the llama community. Rick and Mary have hosted numerous clinics and workshops at their former home in Grass Valley, California, including a LANA Fleece clinic. They have served as show superintendents, ring steward, scorekeepers, gatekeepers, arena crew, and performed all the vital behind-the-scene activities to ensure a show’s success. The Adams are generous show sponsors and their financial contributions are greatly appreciated. Mary has served on different organizational boards including LANA’s Board of Directors, and helps with LANA’s elections. The couple is always willing to help out in any way. In recent correspondence with Mary she stated, “The best part of the llama world is the great friends you make all around the country that have the same passion and obsession.”

!

The Adams now reside in Bend, Oregon, on a beautiful 45 acre ranch with their herd.

!

Thank you Rick and Mary for all you do for the llama community. Congratulations on your LANA Hummdinger Award.

CHENE MOGLER

TRINITY HARRY

Adult Follow Me Award Winner

Youth Follow Me Award Winner

A long-time member of LANA, Chene has been serving on the LANA Board since 2013; and has been the President since 2014. He and his wife, Andrea, took on the superintendent job for LANA's Hobo Classic Llama Show in 2015, and for three years, have brought the Hobo feel and fun back to the show. Chene has brought his amazing woodworking skills to LANA by creating awards, both for LANA's annual recipients and for the Nationals Versatility champions. Chene is a volunteer who can be counted on to lead when necessary and also to support others when needed. Thank you, Chene, for being an important and valued member of LANA.

Trinity joined the Orange Blossom 4-H Llama Project in 2010, a quiet, reserved young lady. Now a senior in high school, Trinity has grown up into a lovely young lady. She is the rare youth who sees where help is needed and stays late to help clean up. It is Trinity who remains after a show to help put obstacles in trailers, to take down tables and stack them on carts to empty water buckets and ensure all the trailer doors are secured. She inevitably wins awards at shows for her quiet assistance. She has always been a phenomenal role model to any newcomer to the project, and during project meetings, she has any new youngster tucked under her wing. She is patient and helpful to those just learning their way with animals and obstacles.

HOBO HISTORY ! ! In 2000, Dan and Marilyn Milton, Cris Jennings, Sherry Johnston, Greg and Esther Sue Sykes and Doug and Darlene Meyers purchased the Firecracker Sale and turned it into a non-profit organization to benefit the Llama Industry. The Miltons traveled to the Estes Park Wool Market and Llama Show, Missouri, the Ag Show in Tulare, CA, and OFFF in Canby, OR with extensive displays to promote all aspects of the llama industry. Dan and Marilyn gave seminars all over the country and donated the fees back to the organizations for scholarships, etc. They hosted two major llama auctions combined with shows in Roseberg, OR. They turned all profits back into the industry by educating, sponsoring events, giving scholarships and even supporting organizations such as LANA with a $5000 donation to sustain them. As sales on the West Coast were declining, the group needed another way of making money. Because shows were still popular, they decided that a show was the way to go. However, all desirable dates were taken so the Miltons conceived the idea of the Hobo Classic that could be held in the wintertime. Thus, grooming became “illegal” and to enforce that there were Hobo Cops and a jail. It grew from there to include an entire Hobo Town complete with a junk yard, a soup kitchen, a dock, a box car, out houses (all decorated in authentic hobo symbols) and a perpetual yard sale where those who didn’t have costumes could get themselves in the spirit of things. For the first several years there were over 300 llamas in attendance at the shows. It started Friday evening and continued to the end of the day on Sunday. There were many special events for all levels of performance with awards and cash prizes. The group sponsored sportsmanship and service awards, as well. In 2008, the Miltons purchased the Celebrity Show and they passed the Hobo show on to LANA. Since then, Stanislaus County Fairground has been the home to the Hobo Classic. The Moglers have been returning the spirit of the show back to its true Hobo roots. 9
