THANK YOU for CONTRIBUTING Thank you to the following for their contribution to this newsletter: Alyson Giardini, Kathy Nichols, Joy Pedroni, Stephanie Pedroni, and Sue Rich

This newsletter is dedicated to the Hobo Classic Show - the exhibitors, family and friends, and the many volunteers who helped to put on the show. I always enjoy putting the Hobo Newsletter together. While it takes some time to assemble, I’m happy when it all works out. I apologize for not getting many pictures of the halter classes. The wind made it difficult to get good pictures. Please enjoy looking this newsletter and look forward to the Spring edition.

HOBO HISTORY

In 2000, Dan and Marilyn Milton, Cris Jennings, Sherry Johnston, Greg and Esther Sue Sykes, and Doug and Darlene Meyers purchased the Firecracker Sale and turned it into a non-profit organization to benefit the llama industry. The Miltons traveled to the Estes Park Wool Market and Llama Show, Missouri, the Ag Show in Tulare, CA, and OFFF in Canby, Oregon with extensive displays to promote all aspects of the llama industry. Dan and Marilyn gave seminars all over the country and donated the fees back to the organizations for scholarships, etc. They hosted two major auctions combined with shows in Roseberg, OR. They turned all profits back into the industry by educating, sponsoring events, giving scholarships an even supporting organizations such as LANA with a $5000 donation to sustain them. As sales on the west coast were declining, the group needed another way of making money. Because shows were still popular, they decided that a show was the way to go. However, all desirable dates were taken so the Miltons conceived the idea of the Hobo Classic that could be held in the wintertime. Thus, grooming became “illegal” and to enforce that there would be Hobo Cops and a jail. It grew from there to include an entire Hobo Town complete with a junk yard, soup kitchen, a dock, a box car, out houses (all decorated with authentic Hobo symbols) and a perpetual yard sale where those who didn’t have costumes could get themselves in the spirit of things. For the first several years there were over 300 llamas in attendance at the shows. It started Friday evening and continued to the end of the day on Sunday. There were many special events for all levels of performance with awards and cash prizes. The group sponsored sportsmanship and service awards, as well. In 2008, the Miltons purchased the Celebrity Show and passed the Hobo Show on to LANA. Since then, the Stanislaus County Fairground in Turlock, CA, has been home to the Hobo Classic. Superintendents Chene and Andrea Mogler returned the spirit of the show back to its true Hobo roots. In 2018, Kathy Nichols became superintendent and the Hobo Show continues on with that Hobo spirit. The LANA Board of Directors will be looking into different dates and possibly a different site for the Hobo Classic Show to accommodate more LANA members.

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE by Kathy Nichols THANK YOU to the exhibitors for coming to the show to the sponsors for your generosity to those who donated to the auctions to our friends who came to support The weekend started with beautiful weather for the performance classes Saturday. The welcoming sunshine warmed the eager exhibitors. Thank you to Rob Knuckles and Cheryl Juntilla for coming from Colorado to judge our show, Thank you to Jill Knuckles and Wally Juntilla for tagging along with your spouses. I appreciate you lending a helping hand. Awards were given at the conclusion of the classes and many hands helped to clear the obstacles for the LANA’s evening festivities. Thank you to Fred and Kenny Rich for cooking and serving a delicious dinner of chili, soup and salad. Thank you to Sue Rich for acting as auctioneer for the desert auction. Thank you to everyone for donating yummy desserts. Dr. Julie Dechant received the LANA Lifetime Achievement Award. Her beautiful award was crafted by former LANA President Chene Mogler. Thank you Chene. A wind picked up over night and by the time halter classes were to begin, it was gusty. As you can see in the picture below, the arena was unusable. Those working behind the scenes were kept scrambling to keep things from blowing away. Halter classes were moved to a wide portion of the driveway where a building served as a wind break. Thank you to Joy and Stephanie Pedroni for all that you did — and you did so much!! Your LANA BOD will be looking into changing the Hobo Show date next year to accommodate our membership.
