LANA NEWS SPECIAL HOBO EDITION LANA’s Hobo Show The show was held at the Stanislaus County Fairground in Turlock on January 21 - 22, 2016. This was a no groom show and rules were strictly enforced by sheriff Mogler. You could be arrested and sent to jail if found cleaning your animal or in possession of a brush. There was a competition for dirtiest animal. PFO Mayfair Tewa of Fallen Oak Llamas was the winner. Stormy weather was predicted for the weekend, but a little drizzle on Saturday and a cloudy Sunday couldn’t dampen the spirits. Nothing like gathering around a fire pit and visiting with your friends to warm your body. To warm the soul, chicken noodle soup was served for dinner Saturday evening.

SUPERINTENDENTS’ MESSAGE There is no greater way to start off 2016 than with our friends and llama family. Chene and I are happy to say that we survived pu3ng on our second show ever. We s8ll have a lot to learn, but we’re enjoying every moment of it. LANA’s Hobo show has always been very special for us as it was one of our very first llama shows as a family. The opportunity we have to put together a relaxing and fun weekend for all of you has brought us full circle. We enjoy mee8ng new people and are so happy to be able to share in the show experience with those new to the llama community. A big thank you to our show judges Nick Hauptly and Tor Sorensen for flying out to California and joining in the Hobo experience. 1

HUGE hearMelt thanks and apprecia8on to Joy Pedroni who powered through the plague to be our score keeper and handled all the paperwork. We were down a couple of Moglers this weekend and couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of some great people who just jumped in to help wherever they could. Want to give a shout out to Sue Rich, Trinity Harry, Rick Adams, Kelly Peters, Ron Pedroni, Christopher Varga, Kayla Rogers, Lee and Linda Beringsmith, Margaret and Ralph Drew. If I forgot to men8on you, please know I love you but am really forgeMul. Thank you to all who joined us Saturday night for dinner and the membership mee8ng. What a great evening of food and friends aWer a day of showing. We are humbled by all the support from our sponsors and exhibitors. You are the ones that make the show as great as it is. We couldn’t do it without you. Chene and I have already started thinking about next year and hope you all will come join us and bring a friend. Our goal each year has been all about having fun. The rabbit in the wheelbarrow didn’t get quite the reac8on I was hoping for from the llamas, so next year I will be back with a bigger and be[er animal distrac8on for performance. Thanks again for star8ng 2016 off on the right hoof with us. Nothing beats llamas, laughter and love. Looking forward to next year! Love, Chene and Andrea Mogler
Saturday evening, exhibitors and their families enjoyed a true soup kitchen dinner of chicken noodle soup, salad, and bread. The annual LANA membership mee8ng was held and the LANA Awards were presented. 2

Chela Gray Life<me Achievement Award Winner Nearly thirty years ago, Chela cam face to face with llamas at the Washington State Fair. Her first llamas arrived in 1988 and have been a constant in her life ever since. She bred llamas for a short 8me but discovered that aspect was not for her. Chela has packed with her llamas, worked with their fiber, worked with 4-‐H youth, worked with hundreds of owners and has been long involved in rescue. Beginning every spring, she is constantly booked with appointments for folks needing help with toenails. shots and shearing along with providing educa8on on fencing, farm layout and general husbandry. Each year she supports and par8cipates with her llamas at the Kitsap Country Fair. Chela has hosted educa8on programs at her farm and taught training and management clinics. She has assisted and taught at behavior and training clinics and assisted people with difficult animals. She works with owners on their farms. Over the years, Chela has wri[en ar8cles for various llama periodicals and has been featured in several newspapers. Chela went to Australia — twice — to help teach owners how to manage and work with their llamas. She served on the board of Llama Owners of Washing to State (LOWS), later becoming president. Chela has served on the LANA BOD. The ini8al idea of S8llpointe Sanctuary was conceived in the 90’s and was incorporated as a non-‐profit in Washington State in 2000. S8llpointe Sanctuary not only takes in llamas and alpacas in need but plays a significant role in educa8on. S8llpointe works with the Girls Scouts, 4-‐H, area schools and local communi8es teaching about llamas specifically as well as the general care and needs of all animals. S8llpointe works with other rescue organiza8ons in any way possible. Community Resource organiza8ons send volunteers to S8llpointe to work on projects that help people learn ways of re-‐ entering the workforce and to complete comment service obliga8ons. S8llpointe Sanctuary provides speakers for special occasions at schools, assisted living residences and correc8on facili8es always accompanied by a llama or llamas. Chela Grey has long been intricately involved in the llama community. 3

Dolly Peters Hummdinger Award Winner Dolly was raised in Moraga, California. She and her sister, Kathy, were both equestrians who competed in the Grand Na8onals. They took kids on horseback trips in the Sierra and spent their summers at their cabin in Strawberry. She a[ended Cal Poly and worked as a Med-‐Tech. Dolly moved to Tahoe to raise her son Kelly and began her career in Real Estate as a Broker. She has been a Broker/Realtor for thirty five years and con8nues to have a successful, fulfilling career even though she is now semi-‐re8red. Dolly got her first llamas in 1988 and boarded them at the ranch of Dick and Virginia Christensen. In 1992, she bought property in Gardnerville and moved her llamas on to her own ranch. Dolly has been a member of LANA for over twenty years and has served on the Board for five years. Her commitment and support to the organiza8on has been valuable. She has been a member of many other llama associa8ons as well. Dolly has mentored llama owners through her years as an owner and breeder. Her support and generosity has been greatly appreciated by all who know her. Ask her how she’s feeling and she’ll reply “like a gazelle.”

Sherri Tallmon
Kayla Rogers
Adult Follow Me Award Winner
Youth Follow Me Award Winner
Sherri has had llamas in her life for twenty years and enjoys all facets of them: driving, performance, breeding, training, fleece, to showing across the country. She mentors and educates youth and adults, par8cipates in parades, and takes people on llama hikes. Sherri brings her llamas to assisted living facili8es and was even featured in the news while there. She has helped animals in various living situa8ons who need to be re-‐homed. Besides breeding and showing, she enjoys selling fiber products. A long 8me member of LANA, her support to the organiza8on has been greatly appreciated Through the ac8vi8es that Sherri does, she is introducing llamas to many people. What a great ambassador and wonderful example for others to follow.
Kayla has been working with llamas since she was able to walk. This past summer she volunteered at a veterinarian’s office and a[ended the 2016 Camelid Symposium at UC Davis. This young lady is currently a junior in high school and aspires to be a large animal vet. She is an accomplished equestrian who has competed in reining and team penning. Kayla has par8cipated in many parades and community events with her llamas. A past recipient of the LANA Youth Award, Kayla is a huge supporter of her fellow compe8tors, both youth and adult, and helps out at the shows. Her favorite part about working with llamas is figuring out each llama’s learning process, and adjus8ng her training to get the desired result.

HOBO HISTORY
!
! In 2000, Dan and Marilyn Milton, Cris Jennings, Sherry Johnston, Greg and Esther Sue Sykes and Doug and Darlene Meyers purchased the Firecracker Sale and turned it into a non-‐profit organiza8on to benefit the Llama Industry. The Miltons traveled to the Estes Park Wool Market and Llama Show, Missouri, the Ag Show in Tulare, CA, and OFFF in Canby, OR with extensive displays to promote all aspects of the llama industry. Dan and Marilyn gave seminars all over the country and donated the fees back to the organiza8ons for scholarships, etc. They hosted two major llama auc8ons combined with shows in Roseberg, OR. They turned all profits back into the industry by educa8ng, sponsoring events, giving scholarships and even suppor8ng organiza8ons such as LANA with a $5000 dona8on to sustain them. As sales on the West Coast were declining, the group needed another way of making money. Because shows were s8ll popular, they decided that a show was the way to go. However, all desirable dates were taken so the Miltons conceived the idea of the Hobo Classic that could be held in the winter8me. Thus, grooming became “illegal” and to enforce that there were Hobo Cops and a jail. It grew from there to include an en8re Hobo Town complete with a junk yard, a soup kitchen, a dock, a box car, out houses (all decorated in authen8c hobo symbols) and a perpetual yard sale where those who didn’t have costumes could get themselves in the spirit of things. For the first several years there were over 300 llamas in a[endance at the shows. It started Friday evening and con8nued to the end of the day on Sunday. There were many special events for all levels of performance with awards and cash prizes. The group sponsored sportsmanship and service awards, as well. In 2008, the Miltons purchased the Celebrity Show and they passed the Hobo show on to LANA. Since then, Stanislaus County Fairground has been the show site. The Moglers have been returning the spirit of the show back to its true Hobo roots. It will be fun to see what they’ll have next year.
