June is busting out all over June in Williamsburg brings many opportunities to enjoy food, music and theater. This month’s What’s Cooking chef’s feature focuses on the culinary expertise of Jim Kennedy, owner of Dudley’s Bistro in New Town. list featured restaurants across the state, north to south and east to west. Dudley’s Bistro in New Town, owned by Jim Kennedy earned Number Eight. The accolade was particularly sweet for Kennedy, a lifelong chef. “We have been very fortunate that people recognize what we are doing and what we have done,” Kennedy said in a recent interview at the restaurant located on Courthouse Street in New Town. “We have people calling from all over the country to make reservations.” The restaurant, which for six years was located in Toano as Dudley’s Farmhouse Grill has been located in New Town for the past two years. It draws a steady clientele of locals and visitors who appreciate the ﬁne dining experience offered by Kennedy and his staff. “The food is still as good as it was, if not better,” he said. “The ingredients we use are insanely good. We use the best.” Kennedy admits missing some of the perks of the Toano location, including his herb garden and proximity to area farms, but has made the new location distinctive in the dining room and in the kitchen. Those who dine at Dudley’s will have an experience, not merely a meal.

“We don’t do fast food, and we don’t do food fast,” Kennedy said. “We prepare food made to order. You will have to take time out of your life to enjoy the finer things. People have gotten away from the romance of food and the conversation at dinner. Don’t go out to eat. Go out to dine. ” The menu features approximately five items, all which are created by Kennedy, using his original recipes. When seafood is in season, the menu leans predominately toward fresh catch. Other menu items may feature foods not generally seen at other restaurants. “We have always been cutting edge in our ingredients,” he said. “We bring in wild game from Texas. We have had kangaroo, emu and alligator on the menu. We have a large percentage of people who come to the restaurant who love wild game. We are very unique.” Kennedy started cooking when he was a youngster. He recalled standing on a chair in the kitchen to prepare beef stew for the family. While in high school in Endfield, Connecticut, Kennedy was the first male student to take home economics, where he said he learned the basics of cooking. His uncles owned farms which he often visited, where his affinity for fresh products took root. “Food comes from a farm,” he stated simply. “It is how close to the farm that it is that makes it good. That is the difference.” Kennedy assures those who dine at Dudley’s will have a taste experience they will not find anywhere else, and will be treated as guests to a home. “It is all about our guests,” he said. “The guest is Number One. It is all about our relationships with people. We have a lot of relationships, and we like to remember our guests. We like to remember their name. I have a very good memory.”

Step back in time By Ann M. EÀmetz When you walk into Retro Daddio’s in New Town, it’s like taking a giant step back in time. Customers may hear The Beatles music playing overhead or pose for a selfie with life size cutouts of stars including Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. Store owner Jen Thurman wants those who shop to leave happier than when they arrive. That’s not difficult, as most of the merchandise in the store is there to make shoppers smile and remind them of a fun era. “This is what I have always been interested in, so I filled the store with things that I like,” Thurman said in a recent interview at the store. “Everything in the store speaks to me in some way.” Thurman and her late husband, Ralph, began Retro Daddio’s as an online business. As it progressed, they took their idea to the next level, planning for the store. But following the death of her husband in 2012, Thurman decided to continue the dream and open the store in the former location of Journey’s. “This was something we wanted to do,” she said. 26

The store, which opened last fall, is geared toward the Baby Boomer generation, ﬁlled with retro-type merchandise running the gamut from humorous magnets to distinctive jewelry. “The magnet rack is the place in the store where people laugh out loud,” Thurman said. Reaction to the store has been positive. People who discover it tend to spend a lot of time perusing all that’s available. Customers range in age from high school students through adulthood. For Thurman meeting those who come through the doors is the high point of the business. “I like the freedom to do what I want to do,” Thurman said. “I am here seven days a week. There is paperwork and back room stuff that has to be done, but the best part of the business is talking to the people who come in. I get to know them, what they like. I get to be social every day.” She is always planning for the future and hopes that soon she will be able to hire a couple of part time employees. Recently she began selling pre-owned CDs. It’s her plan to eventually expand the ﬂoor space and offer

vinyl records, vintage clothing and perhaps dabble in consignment items. “I have requests from customers to carry used vinyl,” she said. Thurman also believes in giving back to the community. Her ‘Save a Bag’ program allows people to opt out of a shopping bag for their purchases. Each time a bag is saved, she places a wooden craft stick in a jar, which represents 20-cents. When the amount reaches $50, she writes a check for that amount to a local charity. So far recipients have been Heritage Humane Society, Wounded Warriors and Bon Secours Kidz n Grief program. She also offers discounts to military, veterans, teachers, students, police and ﬁreﬁghters. Those who can answer the trivia question she posts daily outside the store can get 10% off their purchase. Behind it all is Thurman’s desire to make shopping at Retro Daddio’s a memorable experience. “My goal is for this to be a destination, fun store,” she said.

in an environment to help others, to use the gifts we have to help others.” Fitch said clients can count on their expertise to design anything from the smallest ofﬁce to an entire house, restaurant or hair salon. It can be helpful to have an adroit eye that can help them achieve the look they desire. “If someone is building a house, it is to their beneﬁt to work with someone at the beginning so we can help them create the things they are looking for,” she said. “You help them along the process so they make the right decision and it looks the way they want it to.” Designs have ranged from classic to contemporary—and most everything in between. “I do so many different things,” Fitch said. “I once did a house where the lady liked purple— so everything was purple in the house. It is individual as you want it to be.” Fitch is cognizant of people’s budgets. Not everyone can design from scratch. Yorktown is just a short ride down the scenic Colonial Parkway. A variety of fun events for the family awaits. Yorktown offers musical events, restaurants and shops and a stretch of beach overlooking the York River that is ideal for sunbathing, picnics and relaxation. There is much to see and do for visitors and locals. Here are some activities on the calendar for June: The Schooner Alliance, Yorktown’s own 105-foot-tall ship has returned for another season. There are sails daily through early November. It is a great way to enjoy the water with friends and family. The Watermen’s Museum will host the York River Floating Folk Jam series every second Wednesday (this month it’s June 11) 5:30 to 9 p.m. The events include sea shanties, maritime tunes and folk music. The museum also features an outdoor Folk Music Concert at 5:30 p.m., Friday, June 6 with the music of Shanty Grass. Yorktown Market Days, an annual favorite, is held each Saturday morning on the Yorktown Riverfront. The market features a variety of foods, artwork and entertainment. Those who visit Yorktown can take the free Yorktown Trolley, which continuously loops the historic area. The Yorktown Trolley is a great way to enjoy the surroundings without having to worry about getting around. The annual Shagging on the Riverwalk Beach Music Series returns in June with a fun line up of music perfect for listening or dancing. The Series opens June 5 with the Mark Roberts Band. It continues with the Carolina Soul Band, June 12, The TFC Band, June 19 and the Band of Oz on June 26. EÀmetz In 2006, The Virginia Shakespeare Festival presented “Illyria,” the musical adaptation of the Bard’s classic “Twelfth Night.” This year marks the return of the rollicking piece, directed by John Ammerman, who is a veteran of the VSF. The show is a wonderful, lighthearted romp that should be fun for the entire family. One of the notable highlights is the return of Karl Kippola in the role of Malvolio, the role he performed in the 2006 production. Kippola is a natural comedic actor and has appeared in various roles at the festival including those in “The Tempest” and “The Complete 34

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2014

History of America, Abridged.” Festival artistic director Christopher Owens said that the musical should provide a wonderful way for people to enjoy Shakespeare. “It is a great introduction to Shakespeare or takeoff on Shakespeare that appeals to those who love his plays and those who just love musical comedy,” he said. “Illyria” was adapted for the stage by John Briggs and Eric Frampton. The show keeps the original language and setting, but adds more than a dozen musical numbers running the gamut from pop to country/western. The show opens June 25 and runs through July 6. The second offering of the season

is “Julius Caesar,” which opens July 10 and runs through July 20. Kippola does an about-face in the production, playing the pivotal role of Brutus. The play will be directed by Owens and will feature some local festival veterans including Ed Whitacre as Caesar and Ron Reid as Casca. The show will also feature Tre Cotton as Antony (also Orsino in Illyria). Owens found Cotton during a casting trip to Seattle last winter. “Tre brings a background in opera as well as Shakespeare to the roles and I think he will be exciting to watch in both,” he said. This is my 10th year at TNCC. The first year in Hampton, then here at the Historic Triangle campus. How many classes do you teach, and what are they? I usually teach two sections of Introduction to Psychology and one section of Abnormal Psychology fondly referred to as ‘Abby Normal’ each semester. How has teaching changed in the years that you have been a professor? TNCC is so far removed from the community college of decades ago. I started my higher education at a community college in Massachusetts. The systems were almost exclusively a ‘junior college’ or a tech school in focus but more importantly, in expectations. Although we do offer many training careers, the focus is more on education with a mindful approach to help students really see the world in a realistic way. Hub of summer activity in Merchants Square By Ann M. Eﬁmetz Merchants Square hosts a variety of activities for all members of the family throughout the summer. The popular Summer Breeze Music Series, Movies on Prince George Street, Williamsburg Farmers Market and Trellis Jazz on the Half Shell are just some of the activities scheduled in the square in June. Special events, including the 6th annual Williamsburg Invitational Car Show are also scheduled. This year’s event will take place 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, June 8. Mustangs will be featured among the classic cars. The event, sponsored by the Colony Auto Enthusiasts will feature more than 40

Last September Karen Joyner and Deb Walton decided they could combine their love of animals and altruistic spirit to form a business for helping pets and their owners. They began Paws Express, a companion animal shuttle service that can take the worry out of getting a pet to the veterinarian, groomer, pet sitter or boarding facility. Joyner, who works for Toano Animal Clinic, knows ﬁrsthand about the challenges facing working families may have in getting an ailing pet to the vet. “People would call and would sometimes say they didn’t have a way to get to the vet,” Joyner said recently. “Maybe the animal was sick and they couldn’t get to us, and sometimes they would come too late. Debbie and I were talking one day and we said let’s do the best of both worlds—help animals and people at the same time.” Paws Express provides pet pickup, drop off and return transportation throughout greater Williamsburg. Together Joyner and Walton have about 35 years of experience dealing with a variety of animals.

Joyner said she recently helped a farmer whose lamb had dislocated its hock. She bandaged it and provided transportation to the vet. Several clients are senior adults. “We ﬁnd there are a lot of elderly people who can’t get out, they may not drive anymore,” Walton said. “We can help them.” “Elderly people may have shuttle service available to them to help them go to the mall or doctor, but nothing for their pets,” Joyner added. The duo said that business is picking up since people are learning about them. “It is getting busier,” Walton said. “It is word of mouth.”

It can be found at The Vintage Rabbit Home Décor and Consignment in McLaws Circle. “The reason I think it is a great ﬁnd is because it was found in a barn in Kansas,” said Tara Marable, owner. “It is so unique. I really like it and you don’t see them all the time.” The piece was brought to the store by a local woman who was downsizing. It is dated to around the late 1800s and features several drawers that were used to store utensils and rolling pins. There is also a sliding shelf built in. The price will be $319.50 in June. Where green thumbs abound By Ann M. EÀmetz Is there a green thumb in you just waiting to blossom? Hickory Neck Episcopal Church may be the place where you can cultivate your dreams of gardening into reality. Several years ago, the church, located on Richmond Road, opened a half acre of land located on the property for members of the church community to garden. Last year, the project went a step further. Anyone living in the area who wanted to work a 20x20 foot plot was welcome to take part. A few did. This year, there is an additional invitation. The church provides the land, the participants supply the seed or plants and labor. The church will even throw in the use of the storage shed and tools to make it easier. The idea is to get more people involved. Grandparents with grandchildren, parents with kids, older couples, anyone interested in growing fresh produce is encouraged to participate. The community garden program can be es-

pecially good for those who want to eat better, but realize the high price of buying fresh fruits and vegetables. With some work, anyone can be a gardener and have the chance to eat nutritional, home-grown produce. The Rev. Henry P. McQueen, church associate rector, said the soil is good for growing whatever crops the gardener has in mind. “It was once farmland, so the soil is very good without a lot of additional work,” Rev. McQueen said in a recent interview at the church. “We have a half acre of land available, but we can easily open up another half acre for cultivation.” The idea was a great ﬁt for Patty Kipps, who has been participating in the garden project for the past few years. “I grow a little bit of a lot of things,” she said. “Each year I try to plant something new. If I am going to try something new, it is something that I can’t ﬁnd at the grocery store.” The garden is all natural and organic, and those who continued on page 55

The bounty that has been produced thus far runs the gamut. “We have vegetables, herbs and ﬂowers growing here,” McQueen said. “One of our gardeners grows raspberries, blueberries and asparagus that comes back every year,” Kipps added. “There is a big variety of things growing out here.” The idea is for a camaraderie to form between garden participants. “We want to get more people who don’t go to our church to come,” Kipps said. “This is something we know that over time will get bigger as more people will participate,” McQueen said. “There is something very cathartic about working the soil.” Want to garden? make living here so desirable. The Williamsburg Reunion has been held every two years since 1968. It draws a corps group of folks who have memories of what life was like in the past, what it is like now, and what the hope is for the future. There are a series of events that highlight the camaraderie and the spirit of our area including opportunities for food and fellowship. “I have attended the last four Williamsburg Reunions and have looked forward to seeing old friends and making new friends,” said Wilson “Bill” Skinner. “The varieties of the event locations keep the celebration fresh and unique.” Also special to each reunion is a distinctive booklet that contains pictures and stories to highlight the uniqueness of having lived in Williamsburg at least 40 years ago, Skinner said. Most of the events are open speciﬁcally to those longtime residents who participate in the reunion. However, a worship service at 10 a.m., Sunday, June 8 at Bruton Heights Auditorium is open to those who would like to attend. The Rev. Dr. Brian Blount, president and professor at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond

and Charlotte, N.C. will be the guest preacher. Blount has close ties to Williamsburg, having been born in Smithﬁeld and attended the College of William and Mary. Prior to graduating in 1978, he became the ﬁrst AfricanAmerican to be elected to the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The service will also feature a combine Bruton Heights and Matthew Whaley alumni choir. The goal of the reunion is to bring people together. “We recognize that not everyone shared the same joys that many of us have experienced,” Skinner said. “The past was not perfect, today is not perfect but we can come together in 2014 and celebrate how far we have come to assure a better tomorrow.” For more information, visit www. williamsburgreunion.com

The Run For the Dream Half Marathon and 8K will return to Williamsburg at the end of May and beginning of June. The route has been finalized and will offer those who take part the chance to see the beauty of our area from the race perspective. Both races being from Colonial Williamsburg’s Visitor’s Center and will finish at Zable Stadium at the College of William and Mary. The half marathon route will include a stretch of the Country Road. The Run for the Dream was created in 2011 as a fundraiser for An Achievable Dream, a non-profit organization that operates two nationally recognized K–12 schools in partnership with Newport News Public Schools. It is dedicated to the belief that all children can learn and succeed regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, and that education can break the cycle of poverty, AAD offers a quality education in a nurturing environment, the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with caring adults, and the chance to take part in engaging enrichment activities during both the academic day and hours spent outside of school. Last year more than 2,500 participated. Some 600 volunteers helped make the event possible. The 8K run/walk will be held at 7 a.m., Saturday, May 31. There has been a lot of discussion that this generation of college students is impatient and superficial but I don’t find that at all. I see them as people who want to be engaged in something meaningful. They need and want feedback and encouragement very quickly as they have grown up in an atmosphere of instant access to information. But they still need mentors to help them make sense of all of it. What are the biggest challenges you see facing college students today? In our extraordinarily fast paced world with instant everything, it is crucial that students learn critical thinking skills. This is the most important skill to have on board.

Mechanics of anything can be easily taught but your ability to clearly think well is the underpinnings of success. Technology, new research and information are so readily available to people today but I am concerned about overload. Our brains are not designed to be processing all the time. What do you think is the greatest beneﬁt of being a college student today? College is accessible to anyone with the drive and desire to seek a better way. Students range from young home schooled kids, to veterans, to Baby Boomers. There is more access for people with disabilities, physical and mental. All this diversity for me is challenging, yet exciting. What does the future hold for you at TNCC? I feel it’s a privilege

and honor that students are willing to listen to me talk about an organ that I adore (the brain) and share a small part of their lives with me. I will stay put until I feel I no longer have the energy to offer quality teaching and with conﬁdential student evaluations, that may be made abundantly clear. What other job allow you to stand up in front of a group of people, discuss a great subject and sometimes laugh along with them at the absurdities of life? What a great gig! What projects are you working on away from the classroom? I am a member of Green Springs Garden Club. I am also on the board of directors for Latisha’s House.
