REPHOTOGRAPIC SURVEY OF BERKELEY & SAN FRANCISCO 1906 & 2008

Rephotography is a photography process that can require extensive levels of research and reconnaissance that places the photographer in the footsteps of those in the past. The act of scouting the locations of original photographs and photographing in a modern context allows for a connection with a specific spot, at a specific place and time. The ability for the photographer to be in that historic spot is embodied in an act of recreating history. The photographer reenacts history in order to understand the present and compare it with the past. The following project is a visual study that documents original glass plate photographs from a private collection from 1906 and compares them though survey and photography techniques with existing site and building conditions of present day San Francisco and Berkeley, California.
