CAED Hub a revitalization project of a courtyard for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED)

The site is an existing linear courtyard that runs along our university’s architecture building. I worked with Kodsart Denaro and Tyler VarianGonzalez to create the CAED Hub, a central outdoor space for all members of the CAED to relax, socialize, and exchange ideas. The courtyard is separated into three spaces: a small gathering space adjacent to our college’s library and printing center, a large gathering space adjacent to the Berg presentation gallery that serves as an extension of the gallery, and a student workshop adjacent to first year architecture studios. Each space ties together into a contemporary design that responds to the building and the linearity of the overall courtyard. My roles in the project included section-elevation renderings, plan rendering, planting palette and research, model building, and writing the design statement and program. All shown work was produced by me.

Harmony, CA

HARMONY SCHOOL PICNIC AREA

an artist-in-residence and interpretive pathway to revitalize a small agrictulture town

The town of Harmony has a vibrant past as an artist enclave and for its presence in the dairy industry, but has been struggling ďŹ nancially in recent years. The new design focuses on restoring the artistic vibe to the town. This is done with a path connecting the town to the neighboring Harmony Cellars winery. The path is dotted with art installations that call back to the history of the town, including life-size sculptures of cows and a 12foot tall installation to mimic the rural grass of the Central Coast area. An interpretive trail also leads to the site of the historic Harmony School foundation, providing opportunites for education and gathering. The new design also implements an artist-in-residence program on a plot of grazing land adjacent to the tiny town. This program would bring back innovative work in the arts to the town, as well as tourism and residents who are invested in the area.

Cal Poly Legacies Courtyard construction documents for a project to be built in 2017 This was a class-wide project completed the quarter after my proposal for the CAED Hub and uses the same site. The Legacies Courtyard will be a communal space for all members of the CAED to gather and work on projects. For the project, we worked closely with the dean and assistant dean, Cal Poly Facilities faculty, and donor Paul Neel. My role in this project was to oversee 16 other students in my studio, which was further broken into 5 design teams. I facilitated communication between each group, set deadlines and drawing standards, and compiled all the separate group drawings into the ďŹ nal set of construction documents in AutoCAD. The construction document package was submitted to Cal Poly Facilities for approval and is slated for construction in Summer 2017.

Dexter Courtyard creating a new entryway for the department of landscape architecture

Spring 2015 design studio asked students to create an improved entrance to the building that houses the department of landscape architecture. The organic form of the design I created leads the people towards the main entrance to the building by instilling curiosity in the users of the space. Included in the design are vertical bicycle parking, an outdoor gallery space, and lawn terraces to account for a grade change between the site and an adjacent lawn.

Design Statements 1 | Dexter Building entrances - Dexter Building is largely inaccessable unless the user knows about the various entrances to the building. Entrances should be more open to increase usability and accessibility of the building. 2 | Signboards - The signboards currently scattered along the main pedestrian circulation route are precarious. There is potential to design a designated space for these signboards that would be more effective. 3 | Bicycle parking - There is a need for more bike parking in the areas that surround Dexter Building. New bike racks could be better integrated with the surrounding environment than the current movable bike racks and could help clearly mark building entrances.
