GRAND ISLAND (TEAM WORK) Two highways on the north and west side of Grand Island, together with the Chicago river and railways, isolates the site from the booming Chicago city, which makes an “Grand Island in Chicago. The project aims at bring the revival of Grand Island by creative design with convincing strategies. In our group, which consited by 3 architecture students, aims at utilizing the existing building and alleys in between the buildings to create interesting spaces and comercial streets for citizens. When the commercial and art spaces attracting more people to visit the Grand Island, new real estates are established to help increase the population of the site.

GRAND ISLAND RESIDENTIAL PART

When we utilize the old building to create small moment in the alleys and commercial street to connect the whole site, we develop three real estates to attract new residents into the site. Since the general concept of this area redesign is about new concept space, like the alleys, we want to create some innovative residences in this area to make our Grand Island special. So different with the original apartment, we try to seek a new mode for people to live. The idea we wanted the residences live in Grand Island can have more freedom instead of be enclosed in a shell-like room. So we brought up three different ideas to integrate into three different residence areas.

Too far away to share the gardern

Height differents help keep the space privacy and share the view

Provide the gardern feeling with limit balcony area in the condo

JIANYUAN LI

The new residence in the North West of the site is the idea of “Endless Gardern”, which creates garderns for the housing that share the green view with their neighbors. The balconies provides the residences a place that can see the green plants on the neighbors’ gardern without disturbing each other’s privacy, giving an endless green view for the residents like nature does.

Too close to each others and the privacy is disturbed

CHICAGO

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS When the economic started recovered from 2011, Chicago’s economic got recovered step by step as well. Now the economic develop rapidly in Chicago especially in the river north. It’s very obvious the loop, which regard as Chicago Downtown now is too small for further developments. Since the economic is going better and better now, it’s a good chance for Chicago to get higher achievement in developing the city and not limited in the loop. The idea of this project is to build a goverment office center in the intersection of Chicago Rivers. With a powerful owner, the building designed as a super landmark of Chicago and shift the center to the rivers intersection and spread the prosperity from loop to the river north and river west. What’s more, the building also mend the missing connection between the river north and river west, which hold the Chicago together tightly in both physical and mental ways.

RIVER AND BRIDGES MUSEUM Literally speaking, Chicago is born by the lake and rivers but now the river got polluted and government has a plan to clean it. But no matter what the goverment will do it’s more important to educate the citizens to let them know more about their city, especially the rivers and bridges, which are the symbols of Chicago. Since normally people live in the city day by day with the connections of the bridge, so they somehow neglect the importance of the bridges and river. It’s very important for citizens to feel its existence and know the importance of the river.

Inspired by the frozen water, which present as ice cubes in the nature. The River and Bridge Museum designed as three ice cubes on the river and connected by three bridges on the sky. The cubes work as the observation towers open to all citizens when the lower part utilize the existing building for the exibition area and also keep the old cafe in the building. The interior exhibition spaces are connect by the ramps so when the people wander down and get close to the water and finnaly get to the level lower than the water, they will feel like water melt from the ice cubes. When wadering in the museum they will experience and know more about bridges and river.
