all new students are guaranteed a room in high quality accommodation LJMU is committed to helping you find accommodation that best suits your needs, budget and lifestyle. You can choose one of 3,000 bedrooms in high quality accommodation across Liverpool. Most bedrooms feature private en-suite bathrooms and all have individual broadband connections - the cost of which is usually included in your rent. All our accommodation is organised into self-catering flats, typically housing five or six students each. You will have your own bedroom with access to a communal living area and fully fitted kitchen. Most bedrooms include a private toilet, sink and shower but flats with shared bathrooms offer a more affordable alternative. In academic year 2014/15 all our accommodation will be completely smoke free. This means that students are not allowed to smoke within their own bedroom or the communal areas of the flats. Do not delay submitting your request as rooms are allocated on a “first come first served” basis. You can request accommodation if you have an unconditional or a conditional offer, as long as LJMU is your first choice university. You will need to make an initial payment to secure your booking but this will be returned if you do not meet the requirements of your offer and are unfortunately not offered a place at LJMU. Read this booklet carefully and consult the LJMU website if you require further information, in order to make your choice of accommodation. A detailed guide of facilities and prices for all the accommodation is now available on our website, requests can be made from Monday, 3 February 2014 onwards.

Typical prices during the 2013/14 academic year: n Standard en-suite bedroom: £102 to £119 per week including broadband and fuel costs n Deluxe en-suite bedroom: £109 to £127 per week including broadband and fuel costs

n Standard bedroom in flat with shared bathroom(s): £85.50 to £105.00 per week including broadband and fuel costs n See pages 12 and 13 for a full list of prices in 2014/15.

contracts Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. Students who leave their accommodation during the academic year are liable for the rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found, unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled. Tenancies will commence on Saturday, 6 September 2014 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday, 27 June 2015. The Welcome Week for new students will commence on the weekend of 6 and 7 September and the first day of teaching for the vast majority of courses is Monday, 15 September 2014. It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year - for example if you are a nursing or postgraduate student - you can usually extend the tenancy period into the summer. Don’t forget that you retain occupancy of your flat and your bedroom during the Christmas and Easter breaks and you won’t have to move your belongings if you go home. You can also stay on in your accommodation after the first year - the only exception is Apollo Court as this is reserved for new students.

money matters Whichever accommodation you choose, your rent will include all utility bills, a broadband connection in your room and basic insurance cover. Parking costs extra at all the accommodation sites where it is offered and is at least £400 per year. If you are a UK student who can provide details of a guarantor, you can opt to pay your rent in three equal instalments. Your guarantor will probably be a parent or guardian and they must agree to act in this capacity. The three rent instalments coincide with your student funding, meaning you will not pay anything in advance to secure your room except the initial payment. It is important that you apply for your student funding as early as possible - do not wait for your exam results. If you have any concerns about paying for your accommodation, please contact the Accommodation Office. 3

location, location,

LOCATION At LJMU most teaching takes place in Liverpool city centre at either our Mount Pleasant Campus or City Campus. All of the accommodation in this Guide is located in the city centre, so so if your teaching takes place there, you will have several options within walking distance. Courses in the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure are taught at the I M Marsh Campus, located a few miles outside the city centre in Aigburth. Further information about living options can be found on page 9. Because most LJMU students can walk to lectures, you should think very carefully before bringing a car to Liverpool. As in most cities parking is expensive and limited and so if having your car is important, you should request accommodation early to maximise your chances of securing a space. For further information on where specific courses are taught, please consult the LJMU website.

accommodation for Mount Pleasant students The Mount Pleasant Campus is home to the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies. The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in this Faculty.

Cambridge Court is part of a “student village” complex close to the Aldham Robarts LRC, the John Foster Building and the main Students’ Union facilities in the Haigh Building. All bedrooms include a private en-suite bathroom and limited parking is available at this site.

Opal Court, Capital Gate, Europa and Liberty Prospect Point are four of the newer accommodation options available to LJMU students. Opal Court has an on-site gym and pool, for an additional annual cost. Grand Central is the largest and liveliest of all the accommodation options offered to new students and is a short walk to the main buildings of the Campus. The vast majority of bedrooms feature private en-suite bathrooms but a few bedrooms are available in flats with shared bathrooms at a lower cost. There is also a free gym at Grand Central.

Apollo Court and Great Newton Hall are both modern and fully en-suite sites and are particularly convenient for students based at the new Art and Design Academy. Residents of Great Newton Hall can use the gym and pool at nearby Opal Court for an additional annual cost.

The location of our city-centre Accommodation can be seen on pages 6 and 7. 5

accommodation guide 2014/5_Layout 1 27/09/2013 11:13 Page 8

accommodation for City Campus students The City Campus is home to three LJMU Faculties:

n Education, Health and Community (Part) n Science n Technology and Environment The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in these Faculties.

Marybone is a large three phase complex and is ideally located adjacent to the Avril Robarts Learning Resource Centre and the Tithebarn Street building. Marybone 1 features flats with shared bathrooms at a reasonable weekly rent. Marybone 2 and 3 are almost identical and fully en-suite, although Marybone 3 is reserved for new healthcare students (see page 10). Victoria Hall is the smallest accommodation option located within the City Campus and is located close to the Avril Robarts LRC. It is particularly popular

with students studying Psychology, Sports Science and related courses. Liberty Atlantic Point is located opposite the Byrom Street teaching buildings and is one of the largest sites offered to new students. There is a wellstocked shop and a large amount of parking spaces available.

Students based in the City Campus can also choose accommodation based close to the Mount Pleasant Campus such as Grand Central, Europa, Opal Court or Liberty Prospect Point. However it is important to note that the vast majority of new students undertaking courses within the City Campus will choose to live in one of the three sites discussed above.

The location of our city-centre Accommodation can be seen on pages 6 and 7. 8

accommodation for IM Marsh students The I M Marsh Campus is located in Aigburth, about four miles from the citycentre and is home to part of the the Faculty of Education, Health and Community. There is no accommodation available on the campus itself, except for a limited number of rooms for new postgraduate students at Rose Lane, which is ten minutes walk away. Students who require accommodation while studying at I M Marsh can choose any of the city-centre options and travel to the campus for their lectures and the social facilities. Four sites in particular are recommended because of their proximity to public transport pickup points. Apollo Court is a modern and completely en-suite option, located about 5 minutes walk from the main railway station and close to the busy London Road shopping area. Apollo Court is reserved exclusively for new LJMU students and hence has a friendly atmosphere. Great Newton Hall is located about 2 minutes walk away from Apollo Court, which it resembles in terms of price and facilities, being also completely en-suite.

North Western Hall is less expensive than the first two sites named above because all the flats feature shared bathrooms and the site is not as modern. However it is very centrally located which makes it good value for money. Grand Central is also very popular with students based at IM Marsh.

Students who choose to live in one of these four sites can share their flat with other IM Marsh students if they wish. Students who choose to live elsewhere can request to share with IM Marsh students but this cannot be guaranteed. Typically around two thirds of the new students living at Apollo Court and Great Newton Hall each year are studying at IM Marsh. Travelling to I M Marsh is easy. Two train lines have stations within walking distance of the Campus and it is near a major bus route. A travel pass that covers all trains and buses within the area costs about ÂŁ50 per month. Detailed travel information will be sent to all students before their arrival at LJMU. 9

accommodation guide 2014/5_Layout 1 27/09/2013 11:13 Page 10

Postgraduate and mature students The majority of students entering accommodation will come to university straight from school or college and be aged under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of sites in the city centre. If you wish to live in a flat with older students please indicate this when you submit your request for accommodation. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, you should contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) instead - see key contacts on back cover.

Healthcare students Nursing, midwifery and paramedic studies students may experience difficulties when sharing flats with other students because of differing schedules and workloads. We strongly recommend healthcare students choose Marybone 3 as they will only share their flats with students on similar courses. Rooms at Marybone 3 will be available from Saturday, 6 September 2014 but will be available earlier if the Nursing, Midwifery or Paramedic Studies courses commence earlier than Monday, 8 September 2014. Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing in the period from January to March 2015 should consult the LJMU website from Monday, 3 November 2014 to check what options are available.

Disabled students Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure that services are accessible to all. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations please inform us as soon as possible and if necessary we can arrange a visit for you to check that the accommodation you want will meet your needs. Further information can be obtained from the Disability Team - contact details can be found on the back cover. 10

Booking accommodation is as easy as 1-2-3 STEP 1:

Make your choice Read the information in this booklet and on the Accommodation Office website to make your choice of accommodation.

STEP 2:

Submit your request Once you have accepted an offer from LJMU as your firm (or first) choice, you can submit an accommodation request using the simple online form. The form will be available on the website from Monday, 3 February 2014. You can submit a request as soon as LJMU is your first choice university, regardless of whether you hold a conditional or unconditional offer. Do not delay in submitting the request if you are certain you require accommodation because bedrooms are allocated on a “first come, first served” basis.

STEP 3:

Finalise the booking Within 10 days of submitting your request, you will be contacted by your chosen accommodation by email. You must follow the instructions provided and make the initial payment requested in order to finalise the booking of your room. If you hold a conditional offer from LJMU but are later rejected, any payments made for accommodation will be refunded and your tenancy agreement will be cancelled. You can contact the LJMU Accommodation Office at any time for advice or guidance – contact details are on the website and also on the back cover of this booklet. 11
