What do I need to know about the departments at LJMU? The LJMU Food Academy is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities that are continually updated with the latest appliances and interactive learning technology. We also have a demonstration area with video cameras and plasma screen TVs, so you can share techniques and practise demonstrating skills in practical sessions and workshops. Our Food and Nutrition programme give a holistic view of nutrition covering scientific, social and commercial aspects of both the food industry and health promotion. Whilst Food Design and Technology is an interdisciplinary field combining the study of food development with subjects related to health and social wellbeing. LJMU has one of the best records in sport teaching and research in the UK. We were the first university to offer a degree in Sport Development and we were the only HEFCE Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning which covered sport. Popular work opportunities include our in-house Sport Start scheme and UK Sport’s IDEALS programme, through which selected students have been travelling to Namibia annually since 2007 to deliver sport development activities to local communities. We have links with over 450 different employers in the North West who can provide placements but it is also possible to use contacts developed at home or overseas if you prefer. LJMU is one of the leading dance institutions in the country and one of only a handful to offer community and education practice. Graduates have gone on to perform professionally, form their own companies, work as freelance dance artists or further their own studies. The Events Management and Tourism and Leisure Management degrees both have lots of integrated industrial placements and provide you with the opportunity to take 12 months out of study to secure employment in the UK or abroad. Your tutors are actively engaged in conferences, research and consultancy with local, national and international providers, and publish widely on their subject. This means that course content is directly informed by the latest developments and initiatives in the industry and is tailored to the needs of employers in the sector.
Who is the Summer University for? The Summer University is for Year 12 students (or first year of Sixth Form College) or those students in Year 13 (or equivalent) who haven’t yet applied to UCAS.
Where will I stay? Your accommodation will be modern, purpose-built student halls of residence in the heart of Liverpool. You will be in a flat of four students with one student mentor in each flat. Males and females stay in different flats. Each flat has a kitchen and shared lounge and all bedrooms have en-suite facilities.
How much will it cost? All places are completely free. We will organise and pay for all of your meals and snacks, entertainment, accommodation and all activities. All that you need to do is arrange your travel to and from Liverpool on the dates of the Summer University.
Is the SU safe? Yes. The SU is run by staff who are experienced in working with sixth form students and who are trained in Child Protection – they are supported by student mentors who will supervise activities and live in the student flats with you. University premises are safe and the student flats have 24 hour security, night porters, CCTV and secure entry systems. If you travel to the SU yourself, we will make sure you are met and also see you away safely at the end. If there are any problems, day or night, there will always be someone there to help.
Can I come with my friends? If you and your friends want to come along together then that is fine, we will accommodate groups in the same flat wherever possible.
