Spring weather may inspire an organizing frenzy, but make a plan before you start

Garages may have started out as a place to store cars, but gradually they’ve become a place to store almost everything else, from sports equipment to dog food to holiday decorations. As the weather gets warmer and the spring cleaning urge hits, it’s a good time to take stock of your garage. Is it a functional space or just a repository for junk? Are there more logical ways to store your belongings? Before you rush out and buy new shelving and cabinets, professional organizer Cindy Tyner recommends putting some serious thought into how you want to use your garage. She says the No. 1 mistake people make is pulling everything out of the garage first and then getting overwhelmed when they try to cram it all back in. “People go out and buy things, like storage systems and bins, and say, ‘This is what I need to get me organized,’ but the things don’t fit the purposes they need,” said Tyner, who owns an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based organizing business called Functional Spaces. Once you’ve decided how to use your garage, here are some tips to help you finish the job: • Pick a sunny day and clear out all your belongings. Decide what will stay, what can be donated and what should be thrown away. “If you haven’t used it in a year, you need to ask yourself, does it make sense to keep it? If it’s important to keep it, how can you use it? If it’s a family heirloom, should it be sitting in the garage where you can have a variety of problems and moisture?” said Sean Hunt, president of Garage Specialists Inc., a San Bernardino, Calif.based company that cleans and organizes a few hundred garages a year. • Once the garage is cleared, sweep and wash the floors and walls. A fresh coat of paint can brighten the walls, and paints made especially for garage floors protect them from oil and gas stains, and prolong the life of the con-

Home Depot, for example, sells 1-gallon cans of Rust-Oleum Epoxy Concrete Floor Paint for $31.97. A gallon covers up to 400 square feet. • Consider what kind of storage you need. Costs vary significantly, from $40 plastic shelving to $350 steel shelving. You can use old kitchen cabinets or buy new ones. Gladiator GarageWorks, a division of Whirlpool Corp., makes heavy-duty plastic tracks that run along the wall and can be fitted with cabinets, hooks or baskets. A two-pack of 48-inch-long tracks is $29.99; a six-pack of bins that fits into the tracks is $14.99. Kris Nielson, the CEO of Monkey Bar Storage, a Rexburg, Idaho-based company that makes steel shelving systems, said people can spend up to $10,000 on custom garages with fancy flooring, refrigerators and other perks. His company, which has 68 outlets in the United States and Canada, charges an average of $1,500 per garage to install steel shelving systems, which he says are designed for durability and efficiency. “This is not your dining room. It’s your garage,” he said. • Use all your available space. For items you only need occasionally, such as holiday decorations, consider overhead storage units. A 4-squarefoot Racor platform, for example, holds up to 250 pounds and can be lowered with a cable system. Hyloft makes a smaller, less expensive overhead storage system, measuring 45 square inches. If you want a workbench but don’t have a lot of room, consider one that folds into the wall.

• Store things close to where you need them, and in logical places. All the gardening equipment should go together, for example, and the bike helmets should be next to the bikes. “Everything has got to have a home. Otherwise it just gets piled up and it’s a snowball effect,” Hunt said. • Store some things outside. Consider a deck box for children’s toys or a storage shed for gardening tools. Lowe’s sells Rubbermaid’s Roughneck storage shed for $299, for example. Tyner says you just need to make sure to use the new space properly and don’t let it become your new catchall for junk. • Consider hiring an organizer. Organizers can give you good ideas about how to use your space and keep you on task as you’re trying to decide what to keep and what to toss. Costs vary by region and project. Organizers will charge you more, for example, to buy and install storage units than to work with units you already have. Hunt said his company will fix up a garage in a day for an average of $1,500 or so. They also come back and do tuneups when you need them. Tyner gives free 30- to 60-minute consultations and then charges $40 an hour, although she notes that organizers’ rates vary widely by region.

We have a lovely home that allows everyone to walk or use the incredible village bus system to go anywhere they choose – there’s no need to use our car. But we also like having our vehicle directly available to us in the Vail Village Inn underground parking.

Q: What lifestyle did you envision in your home? A: Our home is in such an excellent location for our family and friends! It is so easy and convenient to live here; we just love that we can walk to everything! We have great views of the ski slopes and we can walk to the lift! We wanted to be in the middle of all of the action in both summer and winter but we

Q: What is your favorite way to entertain? A: We love to entertain, especially to have family come out to spend time together. And since the kids are grown and have families of their own, we have found that being in Vail is the perfect bribe to keep the family gathering together! We also like to walk into the village and frequent our favorite restaurants and try new ones! Q: What is an extravagance in your home you can’t imagine living without? A: I get a kick out of the mixer stand in the kitchen – I think it’s pretty cool. We have a cabinet that opens and the shelf holding the mixer raises to make it easy to use! We also think the view and the location are incredibly unique and an unsurpassed extravagance. Q: Is there a terrific feature in your home that someone might not notice at first? A: I think we have so much storage space. That is very important here where families have so much equipment for outdoor activities to accommodate.

Deciding on an asking price for your home is challenging enough these days, but you need specific pricing strategies for particular scenarios, especially if you’re under pressure to move quickly or your home isn’t selling after being on the market for several months. Here are suggestions for both situations. If you’re facing a deadline due to job relocation or other reasons, then you need to price competitively, even more competitively than expected in today’s market. You’ll need to list at significantly less than your competition. Think 15% less. That may seem tough to stomach, but it’s better than continuing your monthly loan payments or the hassle of trying

to find tenants to rent your home. If your home has been listed for some time, but not generating interest, you’ll need to lower your price. Of the three elements that sell a home - price, location, and condition - price is the one you’ll have the most control over. If home values have declined in your neighborhood, the price you originally listed at a few months ago may now be too high and out of line with comparable listings. Now would be the time to have your real estate agent prepare a new Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) and reevaluate your pricing strategy. If you’ve got to sell, and sell now, price it like you mean it.

Whittlin’ A Way

Mark Mahorney worked as a

freelance financial writer and web designer for six years before he began carving out another living. Little did he know that when he began cutting trees to make money on the side, it would lead to an was qui entirely different career: As he cleared pine beetle kill, homeowners kept asking him if they knew someone who could carve the stumps, so he tried his hand at it — and discovered he was quite skilled. For the last four years, people have been hiring Mahorney to create sculptures from the dead pine trees in their yards. Right now, he has about 12 months of stump carving lined up. He envisions his sculptures in terms of grids, blocking designs out, breaking them down into smaller and smaller chunks, then cutting away at tree trunks with a chain saw before carving the fine details of foxes, owls, hawks, squirrels, totem with a chain sa poles, Vikings, cowboys, bears and other characters with knives and chisels. Mahorney’s interest in carving stems from whittling with his grandfather, who lived in the Ozarks and carved for 30 years. His grandfathers pieces were smaller, typically measuring less than a foot tall. But Mahorney has translated this into gigantic proportions.

“It’s the same, just the tools are larger,” he says. “And the wood is not always ideal. It’s round, and you can’t draw a picture on it; you have to visualize it ... other than that, you just go with it and live with whatever the tree wants.” His pieces range from $400 to $2,000 and up, depending on size and detail. Last summer, he made such sculptures as an 8-foot goat, which he painted, and two cowboys in a shoot-out. And, he’s still brainstorming ideas. “I try to come up with original designs,” he says. “I haven’t carved the same thing twice.” His largest work so far, at a Blue River home, is a 20foot totem, which depicts the ecosystem, including an eagle and fish on top, with a tumbling stream — complete with trout — and other animals frolicking throughout the trunk. To preserve his work, he installs rods in the tree bases to wick fungicides up the trunks, to prevent them from rotting, then coats the pieces with linseed oil and a final coat of log-home sealer. And these days, his artistic leanings are prompting him to take his carving skills further, by making log banister pedestals, relief carvings, ranch gateways and high-end furniture — as soon as he finishes the backlog of beetle kill people want him to transform. Earl Biss Rides Again Earl Biss, the late Aspenite and a significant figure in Indian and Southwest art, was adamant that his paintings should endure. So Biss, following the old masters he revered, obsessed over materials and techniques that would ensure his work lived a long life. But simply existing doesn’t mean the paintings were living a good life — they needed to be seen, commented on, and made available to viewers and collectors. This is where Lou Lou Goss, and her new Unique Modern Art gallery, come in. An Aspen native, Goss was married to Biss, and also held the title of director of Aspen’s Galerie Biss, which had a short-lived run from 1997-98. “Earl and his blind faith — putting a teenager in charge of his paintings,” says Goss, who was 19 at the time. But Biss apparently knew what he was doing. After the painter died in 1998, at the age of 51, Goss went on to a productive career as a fine-art consultant, working with collectors and galleries. Now she is back in the gallery business, and back in the business of getting Biss’ work

in front of the world. Unique Modern Art specializes in the original oil paintings Biss left behind, and also shows other artists — LeRoy Neiman, Coloradan Ramon Kelly, bronze sculptor Elie Hazak — who complement Biss’ work. Among the Biss collection are pieces that have never been exhibited before, spanning from the early ‚80s until his death. “Each time he painted a group, say of 15 pieces, he’d take what he felt were the nicest and put them aside,” Goss says. “He was saving them for when he opened his own gallery, when he could publish his own work.” Thanks to Goss, those paintings will live out in the world, not hidden away. “His clientele needed to know where to go to find him,” she says. “We just needed to make the work available again.” —Stewart Oksenhorn Find Unique Modern Art in downtown Aspen at 603 So. wning a home on Vail’s exclusive Beaver Dam Road has always had a certain cache, especially when a family is able to create an estate for generations to come. Over two decades ago, the owners of 394 Beaver Dam did just this, superimposing their ideal design on a virtual blank canvas in one of the most desirable locations in Vail. With a strong Swiss heritage, and an even stronger sense of family, the owners wanted a cozy family home in the alpine tradition. To achieve this look on the exterior, they personally hand painted the shutters, copying a flame and cross design from the grandparents’ home in Gorgier, Switzerland. Traditional architectural details copied straight from Swiss chalets perfected the look. The home’s interior design was crafted by Sudie Woodson out of San Francisco who, with the owners’ help, spent endless days unearthing fabulous antiques and accent pieces that represented traditional alpine living. Locating European rugs with traditionally subdued colors was the most difficult of the design tasks, according to the owner. She also shared that “We really wanted to recreate a traditional chateau and did not realize what an undertaking and an education it would be, but it was worth every minute!” Finished throughout with hand-crafted artwork, including etched glass doors and window panels as well as murals by renowned muralist Samantha Renko, there is a charming surprise hiding around every corner of the home. Renko, whose work has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens and Sunset magazines, was originally hired to paint just the entrance and great room of the home but the owners loved her work so much that they asked her to keep going. The murals evolved over nearly a decade as the artist lived in the house each summer for a month to six weeks and just let her fancy take over. Renko would paint and then dry sandpaper the paint down so it looks old. She always left the family a “surprise” at the end of her annual stint, one year it was the family medallion on the outside wall, another year it was the owners’

own family home in Switzerland recreated in the master bathroom. “You truly feel as though you have been transported to a chateau in the Swiss Alps outside of Zermatt when you step inside the front door,” says Ron Byrne of Ron Byrne & Associates Real Estate, “It is a perfect combination of privacy and seclusion, when in fact you are within five-hundred feet of the slopes of Vail.
