RETROVERSE MAGAZINE AND NEWSLETTER Retro-verse Magazine is a home magazine geared toward individuals with a unique interior decorating style. All of the features in the magazine reflect different time periods while still being fresh and innovative. Design elements include a combination of Art Deco, retro and contemporary typefaces. The masthead uses Avanti serif, a fancy yet old school type for the word “retro”. Andes, an Art Deco typeface is employed for use in the word “verse” as well as for the section headers and large page numbers of the contents page. Curved and dramatic lettering are a key characteristic of retro schemes. This retro design is complimented by distinct characteristics with the use of circles and geometric shapes, as well as the color palette. The colors are less saturated and have a more flat feel than other hues. The cleanly looping ascenders and descenders of the Great Vibes typeface used with the article provide yet another compliment to the retro design.

Step Into

1A

The Light

Sleek Modernism: If your decorative style leans more toward modern

minimalism, opt for a few retro pieces that have simple curves and lines. Remove large quantities of furniture from your space so the eye can focus on a few focal points of the room. Retro modern style enjoys free forms that are fluid in nature and appeal.

Luxurious Home Accents No matter your situation—single, married, parent, empty nester—lighting probably functions as your home's hardest working element. Well planned lighting makes every activity much more enjoyable, whether it be game night, movie night or even pizza night. The right lighting adds drama and elegance with a mix of natural light supplemented with ambient, task, and accent lighting. A balance of fixtures and sunlight sustains the warmth of a room while allowing homeowners to create different moods.

Size It up: Fixtures must give adequate

light, but also must be sized appropriately. In an average sized dining room, this means 18" to 24" in diameter. Add fabric shades to exposed bulbs for a more romantic feel.

Vamanos Magazine is a lifestyle magazine geared towards Hispanic-Americans. The objective was to create a magazine that covered topics such as health, tourism, technology, music, art, and fashion. All of the articles, photos, and advertisements were carefully selected to reach my target audience. My goal was to educate Hispanic Americans on where they come from, who they are, and who they can become. The masthead and headers of the magazine use Valentina typeface, a classic didone that follows some of the canons proposed by Bodoni in the eighteenth century but incorporates many of the characteristics of the antique Spanish punches of the time. All body copy appears in Optima, a legible font with a wide range of applications, modern and yet classic in appearance. The color palette of turquoise, yellow, orange, red, and green was inspired by the rich culture carried by Hispanics.

INTERNSHIP

During my summer internship at White Car Marketing I had the privilege of working with two very knowledgeable designers and created several editorial designs for print. The first was an information brochure for Grizzly Marine. Secondly I designed materials for Momentum, a new cross-fit gym in Thibodaux, La. These materials included a rack card and a booklet for new members to become familiar with Momentum gym and the benefits of cross-fit. When designing the layout for the booklet I was challenged to create a design that showed motion and reflected the energy of Momentum. I successfully achieved this through visual hierarchy and angeled type that guides the reader’s eye from page to page. After completing the internship I was required to design a report that documented my experience as an intern.

MOSAIC

The 2015 Nicholls State University Mosaic Magazine is a literary arts magazine. The entire publication is made possible by student contributions. The layout of the magazine is designed to be clean, professional and easy to navigate. Each section of the magazine is divided by pages containing a section header and a large image of student artwork. Each piece of artwork was carefully picked to compliment the literature that it accompanies. To add contrast each header and title uses a sans serif typeface, while body copy employs a serif typeface.

The images used on the poster are of the two locations that the workshop focused on. The dates, location and cost of attendance are the most important information and should be easily recognizable.

POSTER DESIGN Every good poster should relay a message or idea. Poster design makes an impact, it’s meant to be experienced in an instant and is the easiest to recognize. It has been around the longest, for over a hundred years, designers have arranged type, form, and image on posters.

WEB DESIGN Web design is another form of editorial design, and is quickly replacing the need for print design. There are many aspects of web design, like print design the use of a grid plays a major role in the layout of a web page.

3A

LESLEY DILL

For my first web coding assignment I was asked to take an existing web site and improve the design using my own layout. At the time Lesley Dill’s website was not as impressive as the beautiful artwork she creates. I decided to rework her site using heavy imagery to showcase her talent, along with angular shapes to reflect the feminist approach to her work.

A logo is a form of identification for a company, product, or individual. Logos identify through the use of a symbol, signature, mark, or icon. IDENTITY

Haven Aviary

Creating a successful brand identity can be one of the most rewarding aspects of graphic design, for both the designer and the client. The identity of a company is what the world sees and knows, it is important that these visuals match the tone of the company and appeal to the company’s target audience.

HAVEN AVIARY

Haven Aviary is an aviary for exotic birds. We provide a safe haven for birds who may be in danger due to deforestation, or who were once in captivity and need to relocate. This type of aviary allows the birds to thrive in a safe environment without being confide to a small cage. This project began with the design of stationary and expanded to include an educational brochure about the establishment and exotic bird care. The logo shows a feather outside of a bird cage to illustrate the fact that our birds have freedom to soar the skies of our facility. Engebrechtre, an eccentric font, is used in the logotype. The bright color palette was selected from the many colors found when looking at exotic birds.

POGO POLO

This typography assignment required the use of only one typeface throughout the stationary system. Given only the company name I chose to make Pogo Polo a vintage children’s clothing boutique. This stationery system for Pogo Polo uses muted blues and brown to reflect the vintage style of children’s clothing that can be found in the boutique. The logotype is set in Bodoni. This logotype is paired with a more decorative weight of the typeface, Bodoni Classic Swashes, which creates the symbol. Multiplying the symbol creates the pattern used throughout the system.

PATRIOT HIGH SPEED RAILWAY

Patriot High Speed Railway is a proposal for America’s first electric high speed train system. The branding for this company focuses on a new form of patriotism. The expanded color palette is derived from the diversity of the people of America and most importantly the diversity of travelers on the railway. The symbol of the star is one of America’s most recognizable form of patriotism. The angles of the company’s star symbol represent motion and traveling from one place to another. A pattern was formed using each triangle from the star. The pattern is inspired by mosaic designs, where each piece comes together to create the whole. The mosaic motif also relates to the individuals that come together to shape the United States. This pattern is consistent and represented through each aspect of the company’s brand.
