COLORADO CLIMATE

The arid conditions bring only 8 to 15 inches of annual precipitation, and locals wake up to more than 300 days of sunshine each year. Winters are mild, with an average daily high temperature of 45 degrees. Reaching 60 degrees is not uncommon. Snow doesn’t stay on the ground long in Denver, so golf courses and outdoor cafes are able to stay open year-round. However, the nearby mountains and ski resorts often receive significant annual snowfall. In Summer, Denver enjoys low relative humidity, making for beautiful, sun-filled days and cool, comfortable evenings. The average daily high temperature in August is a mild 86 degrees. The temperate weather is due in part to the city’s altitude: 5,280 feet above sea level, or exactly one mile high. 8

The region’s K-12 education system includes 19 public school districts, as well as a number of private and parochial school systems.

SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

The system offers many educational choices, including high-quality public schools with alternative learning environments such as charter and magnet schools. Although excellent private schools are available in Metro Denver, they are not utilized as highly as in other cities due to the quality of our public school system. About 10% of the total student population attended private schools in Metro Denver in 2017. Metro Denver schools all offer open enrollment, meaning students living in one school district can attend a school in any other district. This allows parents to select schools that match each student’s individual needs. 15

HIGHER EDUCATION

The Metro Denver region provides a wide range of higher education opportunities, encompassing a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at 11 public and private four-year colleges and universities. Included are world-class research institutions, such as the University of Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, and the University of Denver. Colorado’s community colleges offer employers customized training opportunities to meet changing workforce needs. 16
