FRITTERS AWAY The latest addition to Peel Street’s respectable roster of trendy eateries is JALAN. This modern Malaysian restaurant pulls its inspiration from hawker halls and mamak stalls, serving up stylised takes on Malay street food culture in a stylish dining room that’s a throwback to 70’s Borneo chic. With influences from Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines, you’ll find some serious fusion here, with dishes like Beef Rendang Samosas, a hybrid of a Malaysian curry puff with Indonesian coconut beef stew, or the Laksa Fried Chicken. While everything is worth sampling, especially the elevated vegetarian options like the Black Pepper Eggplant, it’s the desserts that deserve special mention. Banana fritters are fried to perfection, topped with a vibrant pandan and coconut ice cream, and drizzled in caramel and crushed peanuts - what’s not to love? Definitely one to check out before word gets around and the line to get in is around the block. 42 Peel St., Central, 2386-2216, jalanhk.com.
