Letter from the Editor Greetings to each of you and thank you for joining this incredible God journey with us! My team and I are so excited about all that God is going to do within this year. We’re even more excited that you are here to experience the relaunch of our newsletter. As you can see, God is stretching the vision so we are now publishing a mini-magazine. It’s both an exciting and scary time simultaneously. I want you to know that we are going to put our very best effort into producing an excellent product for you. We are looking forward to presenting you with insightful articles, new resources and encouragement for your daily life. One of our visions for this part of the ministry is to expand to a full print magazine. Woohoo!!! We are in a place of celebration now and expectation of how God will bring this vision to pass. In the meantime, we will continue to work diligently to present you with an excellent digital mini magazine. We also want to present you real life testimonies that will encourage you and point you to Jesus Christ. Our hope is that with each edition, your relationship with Christ is deepened and your hope in Him is built up. My personal testimony about the newsletters is that it was challenging. I had this great vision from God that started out with a one page letter of encouragement and began to grow. The mailing list continued to grow and I was encouraged. By year two of publishing the newsletter, I was completely discouraged and literally pressing each month to share. The more discouragement set in, the more depressed I got.

When it was time to start the newsletter for year three, which would have been 2016, it never got off the ground. I went into shut down. I had no desire to write. I felt a sense of no support or help in this area. In my mind, I figured it wasn’t working and it was just time for that season to end.

Slow To Speak Suprina Frazier International Best Selling Author Publisher Bridges & Channels Enterprises, LLC Picture a bright sunny Friday morning. Its fall, so the weather is not too hot, not too cold…just right. The time – 11 o’clock-ish. The place – a local grocery store. I’m standing in line at the customer service booth, minding my own business as I wait to get a money order, when my ears suddenly pick up parts of an ongoing conversation about women who shouldn’t be having babies and why. The three participants in this conversation are several people ahead of me. They are very loud and opinionated. I remain silent. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I don’t feel compelled to share mine on the subject. Nor is God prompting me to say anything. In fact, I sense Him telling me NOT to speak. I obey. Instead of giving my two cents, I silently take note of the loud talkers as well as the ‘seemingly’ pregnant woman in front of me. The loud talkers look to be in their 30s and 40s. The ‘pregnant’ woman looks to be in her late 50’s. On top of that, she has a small child with her. Like me, the older woman is silent as well, except her face is stoic and indifferent – not an emotion in sight. In contrast, the little girl with her is a ball of energy, unable to stand still and too willing to push a buggy that doesn’t belong to them. After the loud talkers leave, the formerly stoic woman begins to go off. “I started to curse them out,

but I had my grandbaby with me,” she says. “I’m not pregnant. That’s fluid buildup because of a medical condition.”

(Ecclesiastes 3:7). How we should always be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19).

I say nothing as I silently digest the information I’d just been given. Like the loud talkers, I also thought she was pregnant. Unlike them, I didn’t try to make her feel bad about it. Now that I know that she isn’t carrying a child, I realize that I suddenly have one more thing to add to my prayer list.

We never know what people are going through and why. Nor do we know how deeply our words and actions can affect someone. Today I pray that you decide not to wound anyone with your words and actions, but instead LIVE WITH MORE wisdom, compassion, and love for others.

“And even if I was pregnant, who are they to say who should and should not have a baby?” the woman continues to rant. “A person can have as many as they want. Why are they worrying about it? It’s not like they would have to take care of them.” She sighed and added, “And I don’t know what’s gotten into my granddaughter today. She was so good during yesterday’s outing. Today she’s all over the place.”

Unfortunately, the woman let those people, combined with her rambunctious granddaughter, upset her so badly that she walked out the store moments later, leaving her wallet behind. Fortunately, she was still in the parking lot, so I was able to rush out and catch her just as she was strapping her granddaughter into the car seat. You should have seen her face. She looked extremely relieved to find me so helpful and most of all, so nonjudgmental. She instantly began to calm down. Amazingly, so did her granddaughter. As we went our separate ways a few minutes later, I marveled at how important it is to know when to speak and when to remain silent

When The Waters Are Still The Cover Story Feature time for you to be still?

Psalm 23:2 {NIV} says, “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,”. The King James Version calls them “still waters”. I never understood, nor appreciated, this passage until this last month or so of my life. I have been so busy doing and going, I had forgotten what it sounded and felt like to be still. Even in the stillness, I at first didn’t like it because it seemed so loud and so foreign. I felt like I was supposed to be doing something and I was doing absolutely nothing. In the beginning of my time beside the still waters, I detested every single moment of solitude. I found myself starting to loathe the silence that I once desired so desperately.

I had worn every hat known to woman. I say that as if the hats are no longer mine to wear. I had been minister, sister, friend, daughter, mother, advocate, speaker, writer, encourager, motivator, praise and worship leader, and more. What I had forgotten to be was me. I had lost myself somewhere in the shuffle of helping everyone else. God in all of His infinite wisdom knew that this time was coming and He had already prepared my rest for it. He had already stilled the waters. As He recorded in Psalm 56:8, He had collected all of my tears in a bottle, and now it was time for my refreshing.

If you find yourself in a moment of still, embrace it. God is refreshing you and giving you a fresh infilling of His Spirit because there is more that He requires of you. We must not become so complacent in who we are that we forget what we are called to be. It is okay to be the go to person that everyone relies on for advice. It is okay to be the one that everyone looks to for strength. But don’t forget, it is also okay to be still. It is okay to be quiet and even strain to hear God’s voice. When you feel that He is quiet, know that it is then you can reflect on all that He has already done and already said. God trusted you with His gift and Jesus believed in you enough to die for you. When you find yourself being led by the still waters, don’t let the enemy come in and taint that time with His lies. Don’t let him come in and convince you that you are in a season of punishment. Know that when you are being led by the still waters, it is a time for strengthening. When you walk away from this, you will be stronger than before. You will be wiser than before. You will be a force to be reckoned with and it will all be a result of the time that you were just still.

Let us define the word still. Used as an adjective it means not moving or making a sound. I like the noun form of the word where it says still means deep silence and calm. I was so used to doing and going that I didn’t even realize The still small voice that God that my service had inadspeaks seemed so far away. I vertently entered me into a storm called tired. I was found myself asking, “God where are you”? What I had so focused on completing assignments that I didn’t forgotten was that He was right there with me. I had for- even know I needed Jesus gotten that He had promised to come in and tell my storm to “Peace, Be Still”. never to leave me nor forsake me. SO, You Want To Be An Author? Often people have asked me how do I become an author? With all of the information floating around the internet, it can be a bit overwhelming. With that in mind, I want to share with you some of the pointers that I’ve learned on my journey over the last decade. Believe it or not, I published my first book in 2004. It is entitled Life’s Experience. And oh boy– what an experience! The process– I mean! I didn’t publish the second book until 2014. From that experience with International Best Selling Author, Suprina Frazier and Bridges and Channels Enterprises LLC, I can now share some of what I’ve learned that has helped to earn me two Best Selling books as well!

you are led by the Spirit of God. Don’t get trapped by these 30 and 90 day plans. These plans may be good and they may work for some people but don’t allow a timeframe to determine how you produce a product that could impact someone’s life for a very long time.

If the truth is told, becoming an author is not hard. It’s a matter of writing and publishing or having someone to publish your book. However, providing a quality product and honoring God with it is something totally different.

Do you know why you’re writing your book? That’s important. Knowing your purpose will help you to stay true to the vision of the book!

The first thing that I would urge you to do before and as you write is found in Proverbs 16:3. It says “Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed.” A successful book- notice I didn’t say best-selling, but a successful book always starts with committing your work to God and praying before and as you work through it. The thing that I love about my publisher, Ms. Frazier, is that she prays over every project that she’s a part of whether it’s hers or yours. I also love that she takes pride in producing an excellent product for God. The second thing you should know is that there are no set timelines for writing a book especially when

The next thing that I strongly urge you to do is to write with purpose.

Regardless of what format you’re writing in, i.e., expository, descriptive or narrative– write in a manner that your reading audience will have a takeaway. You should know what you are trying to accomplish when you’re writing your book. The biggest lesson that I learned is—don’t be afraid of edits. Some things need to stay in the book and some need to go. We’ll talk more about that later. Let’s talk about choosing a publisher if that’s the route that you decide to go. When choosing a publisher, here are some things to consider: 1. Is it who God wants you connected to?

LaTrice Williams 2. Will they help you to bring life to the vision God gave you for your book? 3. How will they help you? Will you have to compromise your standards? Will you have to deviate from something that God specifically told you to do?

You are the owner of your material. You have the final say so of how everything concerning your book goes. Why? Because it’s your vision. 1. The publisher is there to advise you and to help you birth it. 2. Try to connect with a publisher who is going to teach you the process. You need to know about writing styles and techniques, cover art, etc. Knowing these things will make your next writing experience a little easier. Now, let’s be clear– most publishers are not going to teach you everything but there is research that you can do own your own as well to ensure that your product is the best one that you can produce. Don’t just settle for what someone gives you if you know it’s not the best that it can be. Continue to next page —->

Living With More When it comes to editing your book—my thought is that editing your book should be a matter of desiring to walk in excellence. It may seem over the top but in everything we do, we should be working as unto the Lord. Your publisher should be stressing the importance and necessity of editing to you.

It was my first Best Seller but my hardest writing project. I was a wreck! Not only was I new to the editing process but it was like reliving this story all over again. Don’t let that scare you though. I made it through and so can you.

hire an editor. You can still produce a great book. My first book, Life’s Experiences, was edited horribly! It was absolutely unacceptable. But guess what?

My publisher literally had to walk me through this process because again, this was “my” story and I felt like “everything” should be included. Needless to say, the chop was done and the end result was excellent but it was a major lesson learned. She helped me to maintain the integrity of my story and give the readers what they needed. Stage 2—The Grammar Edits! I had a lovely cover but a not so lovely inside. And even worse than that is that I had no clue. The publisher that I used for that book simply said– send us your book and we’ll take it from there. Wrong, wrong, wrong! If a publisher says this to you– RUN!

There should be at least 3 stages of editing for your book. Sometimes more is needed. Stage 1– This is the main stage where major cuts and/or rewrites are done. This may be your hardest stage. This is where you must really dig deep. You have to decide what parts of the book must stay, to ensure that the vision is accomplished and the readers will have a lasting takeaway. You also must decide what must go! You don’t want to overwhelm your reader and cause them to miss the point. I remember my first big chop with my second book Hurt to Healing.

If you know that you’re not the best with grammar, hire an editor and work closely with them. This will ensure that any changes made won’t change the meaning of your words. This is a critical part of your process. Producing an excellent product means you’ve checked and re-checked your grammar. This includes punctuation, spelling, the voice that you write in (that’s a whole article by itself) and more. Do NOT skip this part. This part could determine if your readers continue to read your work or don’t make it beyond the first page because they can’t understand it. There are many writing tools available to you if you don’t

L ivi n g Wi t h Mor e

You need to be an active participant in all parts of your book. – especially editing. This book only produced a royalty check of $7.00. I mean $7 in 13 years! Although that was very humbling, it didn’t have to be that way. As I said, I had a lovely cover and the story line was good but there was major development that was needed to make it a great product. When I compare that to the editing of Hurt to Healing, which was done with a publisher and Articles of Encouragement, which I edited and published myself, there is a major difference. Both in the product and the sales!

Living With More Lastly is stage 3 . These are the line edits. This is the time that you make sure your book reads the way you intended for it to read. It also allows you the opportunity to ensure that your purpose is clear. Again, you want your readers to have a clear, lasting takeaway. The next thing I want to share with you is about negotiating your contract. This is for those who really desire to work with a publisher instead of self-publishing.

what you should expect during the editing process. Again, make sure you get a full breakdown of your line items because some of them may be negotiable. I also encourage you to check into the background of your publisher. Find out what their track record is. How have they advertised former authors? Do they have any author complaints? Check out their social media platforms. What’s being said about them?

While there is so much more to share about being an author, I hope that these few nuggets will be a great help to you as you pursue your purpose in writing. I wish you the best in publishing your first or next book! If there is anything that I can do to assist you, please feel free to contact me! Also, please check out Bridges & Channels Enterprises, LLC Mentoring page for great writing tools and mentoring opportunities. The mentoring services are not free but they are worth it!

By LaTrice Williams International Best Selling Author Editor In Chief The most important thing that I’ve learned is that you don’t have to accept just anything. You can negotiate to ensure that you are not being taken advantage of. It’s important to get a line by line breakdown because it is possible to negotiate some line items. Here are a few charges that you can automatically expect to incur: 1. ISBN numbers and barcodesthis is how your book is identified electronically. You can learn about this at 2. Cover Art– Find out if you are allowed to work with your choice of designers or if they require to work with an approved list of designers. 3. Editing Services - there are different charges for editing so you should make sure that you are clear of the cost as well as

© LaTrice Williams 2017 You must remember that this is a relationship as well and it’s important to know who you’re coming into agreement with. Lastly, I encourage you to use a beta reader. This should be someone who can be trusted to read and not share or steal your material. They need to be able to give you unbiased feedback. It should be someone who doesn’t mind you getting mad with them. It may be necessary for them to hurt your feelings to help you produce your best work. The purpose of your beta reader is to help catch things that you might miss, ask questions for reader clarity, give you storyline feedback and other comments regarding your book. Find someone who will agree with you to successfully help bring your vision to pass!
