OUR FAVORITE WAY TO

REHEAT TAMALES

There are some things that we can always count on come the holidays, one of them is the abundance of tamales and having to reheat tamales. We’ve perfected the art of reheating tamales in a way that won’t make them mushy, but also gives them a different texture. It’s also super easy to do on the stove top!

INGREDIENTS tamales corn oil Mexican crema Salsa de Molcajete

DIRECTIONS Add oil to the pan. Enough so that it coats the bottom of the pan and comes up just a bit. Remove the husks and add the tamales to the hot pan. Fry on until browned on each side. Optional: Serve your tamale plate by topping them with Mexican crema and salsa.

Family Fitness Tips BY PATTIE

CORDOVA

We’re fortunate to have great weather here in Southern California. Having this great weather is the perfect excuse to go outside to workout and just have fun. Here are some tips to sneak in some family fitness everyday. HAVE FUN

Have the kids come up with an obstacle course. Maybe you start at the bottom of the playground stairs, you run up, go across the monkey bars, and so on. Time each other and turn it into a friendly competition.

WALK

Try a walking path near your home for a safe route. One of the places we like to visit is the Kaiser Thrive Path at the Great Park in Irvine because the path is long enough that the kids get a great workout but aren’t completely exhausted.

STRETCH

Yoga is really good because it’s a good way to strengthen the muscle and become more flexible. Keep in mind that a lot of kids’ muscles are tight when they’re growing up and that’s when they get a lot of sports injuries.

RUN

Children around eight years old can do one to three miles every other day, as tolerated. Encourage your child to stop and walk if necessary. Move onto longer runs by slowly extending the distance of your run one day at a time.

HIKING TO THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN BY LIBY

FLORES

Kick off the year with a hiking trip to the Hollywood sign. There are several routes to the Hollywood Sign, with the easiest one also being the longest. It's seven miles round trip. We recommend packing snacks and a water flask for each hiker. About halfway through there is a water station where you can rest under the shade and even have a picnic at the picnic tables. We also recommend starting early in the morning or after 2pm to avoid the hottest time of the day.

Stay on Mulholland Fire Road. It winds around ridges, but you will always see views of the Hollywood Sign, so you know you are on the right track. Mulholland Fire Road intersects Mount Lee Road, which is paved, and takes you to your final destination. On Mount Lee Road you will start seeing the letters of the Hollywood Sign through a tall chain-link fence. Continue walking to the top and you will be behind the Hollywood Sign, which reads (Dollywood). This is the closest view you will get.

HOW TO GET THERE

PARKING

The starting point for this trail is on Mount Hollywood Drive and West Observatory Road. You wil find the hiking trail map at the beginning and a gate that closes the paved road to all traffic. The first portion of your hike wil be on paved road, which makes it easy to take strollers or a wagon, if you have kids. On Mount Hollywood Drive, you wil hike 1.4 miles up and pass the bottom of the Three Mile trail (.3 miles) before you reach Mulholland Fire Road, a dirt road. Make a left there and continue to the Hollywood sign.

Parking is available at Griffith Observatory, which is convenient because you can use the restroom before and after the hike. Keep in mind that there are no restrooms or porter potties on the hiking trail. Additional parking is available on the street. Parking meters on the street take debit and credit cards. For more information, please visit www.hollywoodsign.org LMVLSOCAL.COM | 16

52 WEEK SAVINGS PLAN

by Pattie Cordova

Looking to simplify your savings plan this year? This easy 52 week savings plan fits the bill! So the way the 52 week savings plan is simple – each week you deposit the number (in dollars) of the week that we are in, into a savings account. For example, every Friday (beginning this week), you’ll deposit $1 more than the previous week. Week 1 = $1. Week 2 = $2. Week 3 = $3 and so on. By the end of the year, assuming you deposit every Friday, you’ll have $1,378 tucked away. Keep this savings plan simple by keeping the money in a jar (saves the trip to the bank) or transfer it online every week into a special savings account. Think about what you can do with that money at the end of the year! LMVLSOCAL.COM | 17

GET THE BEST EXPERIENCE AT MONSTER JAM By Pattie Cordova

Are you heading out to see the coolest trucks? Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way to truly enjoy this experience.

Pack a blanket. This is number one on my list because it gets very, very cold outside.  Bring a jacket, gloves, beanie. The works! If you decide to go against bringing along a blanket, bring along all your winter clothing instead. You're going to need it. Earplugs. It doesn't matter where in the stadium you are, it is going to be loud. The noise won't just be coming from the trucks either. The crowd cheers non-stop. It's also a must if you're bringing kids with you. Bring cash. Sure, you say you're not going to buy anything but you probably will. The nachos and beer are popular and the merchandise is pretty cool. I would suggest you purchase something that can be autographed, just in case you want to meet the drivers after the show. Also, cash is essential if you don't want to get out of your seat during the show as vendors will make their way down the stands for your convenience. Leave babies at home. I'm sorry parents, but babies won't get anything out of this experience. It'll probably throw them into crying fits because it can get really loud, crazy and fun - and the baby just won't understand what is happening. Wait a year to bring the bebe because then the baby will be able to cheer right along with the rest of them. Tailgate. Pack your dinner and bring it with you to enjoy before the event in the parking lot. It's a great way to start the night and meet other fellow Monster Jam fans. The kids love this! 10 THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO BY PATTIE CORDOVA

Take this tip sheet on hands-on activities and fun things to do with kids on your next trip. We took a few hours doing most of these activities as a day trip. Take the children’s audio tour Visit the Mission Clubhouse Count butterflies and visit the koi fountain See where the Padres and soldiers lived Learn how Acjachemen Indians make baskets Visit the demonstration gardens and experience the curiosity carts Pan for gold, make Adobe bricks or craft your own arrowhead necklace Sign up for kids camps including Ceramics Camp and Adventure Sleepover Get a scout badge Learn how to make adobe houses and straw dolls Visit www.missionsjc.com/ for more.
