MEXICAN CHRISTMAS PUNCH Ponche Navideùo is served during the holidays, including Christmas Eve and the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It’s a very fruity and sweet hot punch that is great for family get-togethers. You can serve it as is, or add a touch of alcohol for the perfect adults-only drink
cartons of 33.8 ounces Jumex Guava Nectar
cup hibiscus petals
cup shredded coconut
cup un-pitted prunes
4" pieces of sugar cane, cut into strips
cup tecojote in syrup
DIRECTIONS Pour the liquids into the pot and then add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a full boil. Lower the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. Serve hot.
TIPS You need equal parts water and Jumex Guava Nectar. The easiest way to do this is simply by adding water into the carton and then dumping that into the pot. Make an adults-only version by adding alcohol before you serve it. Ponche is best served hot alongside traditional dishes such as tamales. Serve in mugs and include a few pieces of the cooked fruit, including the cane. LMVLSOCAL.COM | 09
MENUDO BLANCO Hosting for the holidays? This easy white menudo recipe will help you feed a large crowd. The ingredients are simple – easily found at your local Mexican market. Best of all, you can throw everything together in under 30 minutes.
gallons of water
tbsp of cumin
tbsp garlic powder
pound beef foot
pounds of tripe
105oz can of hominy
cup of salt
DIRECTIONS Pour water into large stockpot. Add salt, cumin, garlic and bay leaves to the pot. Rinse beef foot and tripe, add to pot. Drain and rinse hominy, add to pot. Cover pot with aluminum foil and add lid. Simmer menudo over low heat for four hours.
TIPS Ask the butcher to chop the trip into bite size pieces and the beef foot into chunks. It’ll cut down the prep time even more. Optional toppings include: cilantro, chopped onion, menudo mix, lemons. We also serve with bolillo bread.

LAS POSADAS A Christmas tradition that goes back over 400 years. It is a re-enactment of the struggle Mary and Joseph had looking for an Inn, while traveling from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
Las Posadas commemorates the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy. Beginning on December 16 and ending nine days later, on December 24. Each night, families the take turns hosting the posada.
The entire neighborhood comes out for a procession. The pilgrims line the street, with Mary and Joseph leading. Children often dress as angels and shepherds. They sing ‘Posada Song,” with pilgrims singing their verses outside and the host family, answering from inside the house. Once the song is over the pilgrims enter the house and enjoy tamales and hot chocolate.
