MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, It seems to me like sale season just started and now we are already in the slow down mode. I’m not sure I’m ready for that, but it will be nice to take a breather. One week ahead of Easter and I wake up to snow, what’s the deal with that? I’m ready for 75 degrees and sunshine ‘til May 1st, then straighten up and be real nice. Most of you probably aren’t aware of it, but I really enjoy going to the Iowa Barnstormer football games at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. One afternoon I ClearCreek2 6/29/12 3:30and PMfound Pagethe 1 River’s Edge got there earlyBC:Layout and got to 1nosing around

Restaurant on the third floor of The Wells Fargo Arena. Ashley, the young lady that is in charge said that I could reserve a table there for all the home games, and after my first meal there a year ago I reserved a table for every home game this year. I can eat supper, watch the Stormer’s warm up, have an adult beverage, and get tuned in for the game. My favorite meal at “The River’s Edge” is the beer battered salmon sticks. The first time I ordered the salmon sticks, I needed something light. I wasn’t very hungry but needed to fill a small empty spot. I figured that they would just be simple fish sticks. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. These are real true salmon and that batter that they use is truly deadly. Along with this meal you get coleslaw and french fries. My idea is to eat that chunk of beer batter salmon and if there is room left, then start on the rest of that filler stuff. We have a blast at the pre-game and game. Thanks Ashley and Barnstormers for a great night out. Also, thanks to Bubba, Maria (Runt), and Indie for chaperoning me for the evening. Summer is just around the corner. We want to remind everyone that this is the May and June issue you are reading, we do not have a July issue, and our DEADLINE for August Yearbook issue is JULY 12. This is the issue that goes to the State Fairs; it’s a great time to announce your upcoming sale. Livestock Plus Inc. and its employees want to wish all of you fair exhibitors big or small 4-H, FFA, or open class the best of luck this summer, you are all winners. As always please keep our military in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless!

A note from Mike, If you were in or around the show cattle industry, you knew Gary Leonard. He was a man with a big heart, a love for good cattle, a distinctive laugh, and a cigar in his mouth that was very seldom lit. This guy helped me, along with a lot of other folks, that thought they needed to be on the show road. I can still hear him laugh when I would tell the story about: If I ever get big enough I will kick your butt. I was 9 years old when I told Gary that, Gary would harass my brother and I for leading our 4-H calves through the open class barn to the stock tank to get a drink at the Adair County Fair. His comment was, as he sat in his lawn chair with a cigar, not lit, and a cool beverage, “hope you boys can afford buckets some day.” Damn that made me mad when I was 9 years old. (And I never did get big enough to kick his butt.) Gary, you were a great friend to me, and the cattle industry, rest in peace. ~ Mike Sorensen

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things by Evan Rayl

Last month I announced in Livestock Plus, Shirley and I were moving from the farm where we have lived for the past 25 years. My old body thinks it is time, actually past time since I am now almost 14 years past the normal age of retirement. Actually, I’ve been the luckiest guy in the world because 9 years ago, during a period of four weeks, I was forced to go from a cane to crutches, to a walker, to a wheel chair. I could not stop my knees from folding and down I would go, onto my hands and knees. Because it looked like I might be in that wheelchair forever, Shirley and and I decided to drive to Rochester, MN on a Sunday afternoon before I got any worse. I had no appointment, so we showed up at 7 a.m. on Monday at the Emergency Room at Mayo Clinic. By 8 o’clock, I was a patient. On Wednesday, after lots of tests the two previous days, I was in surgery for 6 hours where they took 12 pieces of bone off my spine. These bones were pinching my spinal cord due to arthritic growth on those bones. Here’s where the good luck came in, I walked out of the hospital to come home Saturday noon, with the help of some pretty strong drugs. It took about three months to get past the pain, but I’ve sure enjoyed the past eight years. Incidentally, just before I started having to use the cane, Shirley and I returned from a trip to the National Angus Tour in Virginia and the Outer Bank in North Carolina, where I walked to the top of the lighthouse (198 feet tall) with the spiral configuration. It had been moved 2900 feet inland because the Atlantic Ocean was starting to undercut it. By the way, I have now been writing for Livestock Plus all but the first three years we were at the farm. It has been a pleasant, wonderful experience, plus it has done wonders for my spelling, thanks to spellcheck. A man should never neglect his family for businesss - Walt Disney So where did we move to? Shirley and I are in an apartment on the west side of Des Moines. Why Des Moines? We have three children: Renae and husband Eddie live in Johnston, Tom and wife Jody live in Michellville, and Steve and wife Dawn live in Altoona. As you can see, they are all in a suburb of Des Moines. We are learning to lock every door we have every time we go through one. I’ve never had any desire to live in a city, but it makes sense at this stage of our life. I am looking forward to attending more baseball and basketball games, plus spending more time at the Iowa State Fair and taking in cattle sales. The love of family and the admiration of friends is much more important than wealth and privilege. - Charles Kuralt A fellow cattleman was recently telling me his “Unsuccessful

this calving season, two calves got chilled, so he put both of them in his warming box about a day apart. Both died about an hour after coming out of the box. After making a few phone calls, he learned that 95 degrees in the box just won’t do it. The box needs to be at least 102-105 degrees since the normal temperature for cattle is 102 degrees. Looks like the most important parts of the calf warming box are the heater and a thermometer. Now that the value of a weaned calf is worth as much as an acre of high yielding corn, one can easily put more effort and input into getting a live calf. A happy family is but an earlier heaven. - George Bernard Shaw I still have mixed emotions about the Keystone Pipeline. I have friends in Nebraska who tell me the pipeline still runs across the far northeast corner of the Ogallala Aquifer. A leak in this area of the Keystone Pipeline would have terrible consequences since the entire Aquifer would be polluted. But other reports say the pipeline would put North America up to 85 percent sufficient in oil production, which would be extremely important if the import of foreign oil was cut off. Energy security is a vital part of America’s national security. Right now six Democratic Senators are up for re-election, who are supporting the pipeline. President Obama needs to support these Senators in their reelection bids. One of the most important ways the President could back these Senators would be to sign the bill supporting the pipeline. Otherwise, who knows when construction might get started. You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them. - Desmond Tutu Have you heard of “Schmacon?” If you haven’t you will shortly. It is similar to bacon, but it is made from BEEF!!! It just won the prestigious 2014 Innovations Award presented by the National Restaurant Association at their Trade Show. This product is made from whole muscle beef slices using a patent-pending process and a proprietary spice blend to deliver a smoky, slightly sweet flavor with significantly less sodium, fat and calories than traditional bacon. It comes pre-cooked and ready for crisping in an oven, microwave or on a flat-top griddle. As a revolutionary new menu item, Schmacon helps chefs deliver flavorful, innovative, signature items for breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and beyond. “Schmacon is beef’s answer to bacon,” says Howard Bender, the Hyde Park Culinary Institute of America chef and Chicago deli owner who created the product. “It opens up so many opportunities for those who love traditional bacon, but for one reason or another, limit intake or avoid it altogether. We’ve been testing the product for months in our deli; serving it on sandwiches, as a topping for soups and hot dishes, and of course, alongside our breakfast entrees,” Bender says. “Our customers are crazy about the flavor and we’re excited the judges agree that Schmacon is primed to be a big hit.” Schmacon is experiencing tremendous demand from restaurants currently, plus they hope to ramp up capacity to take care of retail stores by the end of the year. n

Danger in the Calving Pen by Mark T. Matlage A note from Mike: I have known Mark for a long time, in fact, dating back some 25 years now. He is a very intelligent cowman, and I believe he wouldn’t have taken a chance had he known this cow was this way. Dispositions change after calving! This letter hits close to home, as I recall rushing my son to the hospital one night after he got stuck between the tires of a narrow old JD tractor by a cow that had just calved. He had a broken nose and hoof prints on his belly and chest. It could have been worse than that! I have been leery of cows calving ever since. If you don’t read anything else in this article, and I recommend reading it all, you must read the last paragraph, believe me those grandkids are very curious. Take care and pay attention. The day started out pretty normal. It was starting to warm up on this April 5th morning and I was finishing up with the few chores I had before I went to work as the Branch Manager for a Bank in New Virginia, Iowa located in southern Warren County. The last two cows with their young calves were in the next lot and one of the cows was bawling. I checked to see what was the matter and saw one of the calves had found a small hole in the panels and was on the other side of the fence. I opened the gate and directed the calf to his anxious mother. I then glanced over to the other new calf and saw he had some scours so I thought I better give him a quick pill as I would not be back for several hours. As I put the two scour boluses in my pocket and walked back into the lot, I had no idea that in about 60 seconds I would be fighting for my life. I walked up to the calf and, like I had done hundreds if not thousands of times over the last 45 years, grabbed his ear, threw my leg over his neck and put him in a leg lock. I have always positioned the calf’s body behind me so the mother could continue to smell the calf while I either tagged or gave a pill. At worst, I have been nudged by mom but I’ve never had a cow crawl over her own calf to get to me. The calf didn’t even bawl and as I began to load the second pill to give to the calf, the momma cow smashed into me from behind, knocking me down. The cow was immediately on top of me doing her best to push my body into the ground and emitting the most awful, guttural bellow. She had me totally straddled with her head at my head and then she dropped to her front knees and her chest was on my chest. The partial weight of a 1200 pound cow was upon me. Her back legs were churning the ground for traction and occasionally stepped on my legs. This was the most helpless feeling I have ever had in my 57 years of life. Now, we’ve all had a cow head butt us, but a quick couple of steps one way or the other and momma cow generally loses interest. But I learned a new lesson of cow psychology, if they get you down, some switch goes off in their head and they are in full attack mode. Two thoughts came to me quickly, one, I

@SS_Genetics

was in BIG TROUBLE. And the second quick thought, is this how my end comes about? I tried to wrestle myself clear but the cow kept making counter moves keeping me directly underneath of her. Finally, after what seemed to be about a minute, I had a small opening to free myself after she got back up on all fours. I started crawling to the gate and just as I pulled myself halfway up I could feel the cow’s head hit my butt again but this time it was underneath of me and she launched me over the gate. As I cleared the fence sideways, I knew the hard ground awaited but I was thankful that I was now out of the pen and beyond her reach. (or at least I thought.) As I laid there a second, I soon felt the weight of the gate leaning against my back and I heard the cow’s body crashing against the gate. I wasn’t safe yet. She was still after me. I crawled about 10 feet and leaned against one of the Stromberg panels that make up the main part of the corral. Now, I was safe. My heart was racing as I tried to catch my breath and I began to take inventory of my body. I didn’t think I had any broken bones but I wasn’t sure about any internal damage. I did have my cell phone on me and I went ahead and called 911. The dispatcher was a customer of mine and quickly told me an ambulance was on the way. Then I called my wife Jackie, who was still in the house. She answered and I informed her that she would be hearing sirens pretty soon and they were for me. I explained that I was behind the barn and that a cow had got me down. Like most small towns, the fire department and rescue EMT’s are your neighbors and relatives. They quickly went through their training mode going over me like pros and soon I was being loaded into the ambulance heading to the hospital. A great big thank you to the St. Marys and Martensdale rescue teams. In the end, nothing was broken and there was not any internal damage, thank God, just bruised ribs, legs and arms. A week later it still hurts when I either laugh or sneeze but all in all, I feel very, very lucky. Lessons learned. Never completely trust any cow, even one you’ve raised and owned for over 10 years. Try to put the calf you are working on the other side of the fence or gate if possible. Work in pairs if you can but with all of us getting our kids educated and sent off to the big city for jobs, this is getting harder and harder to do. Maybe go in armed with something more than a $3 plastic bolus gun? One of my son-in laws mentioned that they make hand held cattle shockers now. I have to think about that one though, it might have even made her even more crazy. Try to roll to your stomach to protect your internal organs. One cattleman told me he was told to try to curl up in a ball and lay still. First, this goes a long ways to again protecting your vital organs and second, continuing to move keeps firing the cow up. Be sure to have your cell phone on you. This was maybe the best and smartest thing I did. I never go out by myself without my cell phone on the farm. And the biggest lesson of all, DO NOT TAKE YOUR GRANDCHILDREN IN THE CALVING PEN TO PET THE NEW BABIES WITH MOMMA IN THE PEN, TOO! I have two grandchildren that are both 2 ½ years old. They love to see the baby calves and they always ask to pet one. They do not live on a farm and, of course, we all want our grandchildren to learn to love the same lifestyle that their parents got to enjoy. But after this experience, it will be looking at the calves from the pickup or the other side of the gate and the petting will be for the petting zoo or the local county fair. n

CATTLEMAN’S CONNECTION

We’re All in this Together by Kevin Sothman Spring is finally here! The cows and their calves are going to grass and cattle prices are high. May is beef month - the start of the summer grilling season, when we promote the great industry we are all a part of! Things couldn’t be much better. My wife of thirty-one years, God bless her, and I have seven children and eleven grandchildren, with three daughters yet to get married. This winter our oldest grandchildren invited us to Grandparent’s Day at their local school. We met their teachers, saw their classrooms and their desks and then went to the cafeteria for lunch. I say lunch because as a country boy the noon meal is dinner - but brother, this was no dinner! I left that cafeteria appalled at the food they’d served, realizing this is what the grandchildren get every day. First of all, there was no meat. The meal consisted of two tortilla shells with cheese melted between them, flavorless rice, corn, pineapple, milk and a cookie. No salt, pepper or anything else to give the food some flavor and no possibility of seconds. You can all guess what got eaten first! Our industry is being attacked - from the political world, to HSUS, to each vegetarian and vegan. It’s their agenda to put us out of business. I, for one, do not plan to sit back and do nothing! That’s what many of us have been doing for too long. I know we complain about the check-off and how the money is spent, but without it where would we be? Other industries spent money for research, development, marketing and advertising for the benefit of their dealers and retail outlets. Why should the

40

Livestock Plus Inc.

BEEF industry be any different? I have city relatives who are daily being handed the propaganda these people are putting out. I need to stand-up and do something about it - starting with this article. Just like in the Dr. Seuss story Horton Hears a Who, we all need to make a noise and let everyone know WE ARE HERE! To use a quote from one of our late presidents, “Ask not what your industry can do for you, ask what you can do for your industry.” This is a great country we live in and a great industry we choose to work and raise our family in. Let’s make sure we pass it on to our kids and grandkids that way. Like Red-Green says, “We’re all in this together”. On a side note, I’d like to let everyone know about a couple of things that are happening! First, I’d like to thank Mike and everyone at Livestock Plus Inc. for printing these articles starting with the April edition! I’m excited, and hoping they continue to share them! Secondly, as of May 1st, my family and I have moved to the Rayl Angus Farm. With the help of my family, we will be managing their herd of Purebred Angus cows, and selling bulls and bred heifers. I look forward to continuing the great breeding program Evan and Shirley have started! I am still continuing as a Livestock Production Specialist, so email me if you have questions or if you just want to roll the cob around over the subject of one of my articles. n

MAY

From the Tailgate, Hello! It has been a long winter for all of us, but, I do believe that spring is finally here! The sight of those new calves bouncing around and with the pastures starting to green up, I am ready to move on to the growing season. It was recently brought to my attention that I had a few spelling errors and maybe some incorrect grammar in my article last month. With that in mind, I would like to thank those of you that took the time to read it. I invite you to keep checking my work as all of my english teachers did through out my years of education. I would like to say, however, that this article is intended to be more like we are just talking about the cattle industry and other topics as if I was at your farm or ranch. We all know that those conversations are not always perfect! As my wife Cara and I are preparing our oldest son Kale to go off to college this fall, we are trying to fill out every scholarship application we can find, or should I say Cara and Kale are filling them out. I would like to share a moment that I do believe all parents hope they have with their son or daughter before they send them off to a higher educational institution. A certain application asked this question; Identify an issue of concern to the beef industry and offer your recommendation(s) to solving that challenge which results in a positive outcome for the beef producers. I would like to quote Kale Kiesewetter, a 17 year old senior at LM High School in Louisa Co.

“I feel an overwhelming concern for the beef industry is our great disconnect from our urban population and their view of our industry. I feel that with a better connection and interactive involvement with the urban population, we the cattle producer, will be better able to market our product as well as give more insight into our farms and practices that help produce nutritional food for Americans as well as promote the farming industry and our lifestyle. This would bring us one step closer to informing the urban population of our positive impact around the world as well as here at home.” Now, ladies and gentleman, I don’t know if that response is right or wrong, but what I will tell you is how proud Cara and I were at the time Kale was verbally giving this answer to his mother to write down. I will also tell you that I, as a somewhat older producer of beef, have no worries about the future of our industry with the ag youth of today. We have many very well educated young producers in the business and with that in mind, OUR INDUSTRY IS SAFE. As always it was good to see and talk to everyone in my travels this past month and if anyone at LPI can help you to market your livestock, just call. Thank you for your time! Bruce

A quick update for those of you without Facebook :) I had mentioned last month that I would be having surgery for skin cancer on my face. I had two MOHS surgeries to get all the cancer, and then headed to the plastic surgeon to get all fixed up! My doctors are all amazing … Dr. Ava Feldman, DO at Heartland Dermatology and Dr. Cody Koch, MD, PhD from Koch Facial Plastic Surgery! I had a couple funny mishaps (well, I can laugh about it now) but it makes the story way more interesting! Just remember to use sunscreen and that EVERY sunburn damages skin cells! Okay, so I have some great gift ideas for you this month. Mother’s Day, Weddings, or maybe even to reward that loyal customer!! I was talking with my friend, Mary Greiman with the Angus Auxiliary. She said they have these awesome gift packages through Certified Angus Beef ® and the wonderful thing about them is that a percentage of the sale goes back to the Angus Auxiliary Ladies to help support the many awards they present their junior Angus members each year. This mouth-watering special includes a package of four 8 oz. Certified Angus Beef ® filets, four twice baked potatoes and a delicious chocolate-carmel brownie torte for ONLY $79! To check it out, go to the Angus Auxiliary website which is angusauxilliary.com. Down the right hand side UNDER fundraisers, there is a “Gifts that Sizzle” button. It is there you can read all about the top quality Certified Angus Beef ® and then click on “Order your gift packs today.” The package I am telling you about is the “Sirloin Sizzler Collection.” Keep in mind the nutrition beef has to offer! Its an excellent source of many essential nutrients, including protein, iron, zinc and vitamins B6 and B12. Beef is one of nature’s tastiest multivitamins. If you need some good Father’s Day gifts, give my friend Angie Mowbray from Variety Graphics, a call! You could order Dad some good giveaways with his ranch/farm name and logo! She has the most fun red solo coffee cups (with lids) and now mugs (pictured on her business card). Koozies are always a good go-to and how about some golf balls so Dad has plenty to drive into the water! Even steak knives with your logo!! Angie is a lot of fun to work with, too! It may or may not have something to do with the fact that we went to college together! No asking for dirt when you call! I’m going to close with a great REMINDER for everyone dealing with some stress in their life! Kennedy Core is a junior in high school and it is refreshing to think about the great role models we have in the youth of this industry! Kennedy wrote, “As I was running around my house, last night, trying to study for today’s 4 tests, pack to leave for Oklahoma, and think about all the stuff I still have to do for prom, I couldn’t help but

think to myself; how am I gonna get all this done? It seems impossible... I finally sat down on my bed and thought to myself ‘it will be okay, you will get all this done.’ At that point it kinda hit me that even though sometimes things can get overly stressful and you feel like giving up; don’t forget God is always there for you and will always bring you peace... So for everyone out there who is feeling a little stressed lately, don’t forget to take a step back and know the big man above is always there to help you out!” Thanks, Kennedy, for the reminder. We can all use a moment of peace, especially during the stressful times! Keep our nation and military in your prayers. Heidi Sorensen 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
