Mike Sorensen ~ Sales Cell: 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com

Greetings, I don’t want to jinx the weather by talking about how good it is because we could still get a really bad snow storm, but we are definitely getting closer to spring every day that goes by. I would sure like to have a buck for every time somebody said we are going to pay for this good weather. I have to brag on my daughters a little. They have become quite the little chefs or cooks, which impresses old dad. Around the first of March, they decided to celebrate Dixie and my birthdays with a trip to the Redwoods in Anita. That was fine and the food was darn good, but Heidi had made her mother some kinda bars with double chocolate chip, double rich, and a kinda soft crust, kinda like apple crisp, with a chocolate kicker. (For a lack of a better way to describe it.) Well, her mother had to fight for it because I just loved that stuff. I think I gained 5 pounds that evening and that’s better than most fat steers. I have fought for years to keep recipes out of Livestock Plus, but this one can be ran so everybody can have the chance to try this treat. I have just made a new rule; if a recipe passes my taste buds it can run, but only one per month and it has to be on Heidi’s page. Now on to Mandi’s cooking skills. Dixie was a little under the weather so Mandi proceeds to take care of her Mommy. Don’t want to wish ill to anyone, but Mandi’s potato soup is to die for. Of course Dixie could not begin to eat all that Mandi brought so good ole dad was there to save the day. I ate 3 big bowls of potato soup, enough to founder a normal person. I am beginning to think the old saying “Give it to Mikey, he will eat anything” is true, they just need to add... “and he will eat it all!” As I was scraping the bottom of that warm up pan, Dixie asked if she needed to get sick more often. That would be a no, but my kids

can sure keep taking care of their folks. Thanks girls! Keep working at the cooking thing!! I landed at my old eastern Iowa stomping ground the other night, Myers Grill. Sad to say I have to sneak up on Myers or he fixes a feast that no real person can consume. On his menu board was something you really don’t see very often. I can remember my mom making them and I can remember my wife used to make them and I think they all quit making them because I liked them, salmon patties. I know you are probably going to think I slipped off the deep end, but if prepared correctly, they are awesome! Myers uses fresh salmon and about twenty other things that make them deadly. He also said he would write down the recipe and send it so that Dixie or the girls could duplicate them. Haven’t seen that yet, it must be a secret. Can anybody out there help me find a recipe?? Also, while at Meyers you just have to have a few bacon wrapped shrimp. Meyers is going to be the death of me by over consumption of really good food that is really not part of my diet. Keep it up, buddy!! Awesome salmon patties!! Sales are going great, my travel is very hectic right now, but I enjoy every bit of it. If we can be of any help finding your next great one, give one of us a call and we will do our best. As always, keep our service folks and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Florida cattle rustlers were found and arrested recently after taking more than a dozen cattle from 77 year old Ed Davis’ farm near Auburndale. They were seen on a red light camera they ran and there was also video showing them selling the cattle at a local auction the very same day. Local newspapers report 37 year old Andres Trujillo and 29 year old Yotnel DeVerea Guiterres were arrested and face charges of grand theft of livestock and dealing in stolen property. Moral of the story: technology wins! In matters of style, swim with the current; in matter of principle, stand like a rock. - Thomas Jefferson A 56 year old man pleaded guilty recently to stealing nearly $30,000 from the St. Clement’s Horse Show. Charles Walling pleaded guilty to fourth degree grand larceny, a felony, in Saratoga County, New York court. He will pay $27,111 in restitution as part of his sentence, but he has not yet been sentenced to jail time. Walling operated a souvenir stand at the Horse Show for several years. He created false receipts to cover the theft, but officials wondered why he lost money every year. At one time, Walling had served as chairman of the horse show. Commentary

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

by Evan Rayl

In his very first time in an auctioneer contest, an 18 year old young man, Blaine Lotz, won the whole thing. Plus, it wasn’t just any auctioneer contest either, it was a qualifying contest for the 2012 World Livestock auctioneer Championship. It was the third qualifying contest in a series of four and there were 19 contestants this time. This contest was hosted by the Greeley Producers Livestock Marketing Association, Greeley, CO. The World Championship this year will be held at Turlock, CA, at the Turlock Livestock Auction Yard, Inc. where there will be 33 qualifying bid callers. Young Lotz studied at a Montana auction school when he was just 15 and started livestock auctioneering when he was 16. He said, “He was very shocked to place as well as he did, considering the competition.” Blaine is a freshman at Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, KS. In addition to being a full time student, he works anywhere from 2 to 5 sales a week. Reserve Champion was Kevin Schow, Paxton, NE and the runner up Champion was Russell Sleep, Bedford, IA. Schow’s father won the World contest in 1980. Sleep was one of the 10 finalists last year. He sells stock at a barn almost every day of the week, except Sunday. Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. Henry Ford A Jackson County man has charges filed against him for allegedly shooting a cougar last November, according to the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources. Daniel Hamman, 26, was charged after he shot the protected animal when it was flushed out of a culvert. The cougar weighed 125 pounds and was estimated to be anywhere from one to three years old. Hamman could be fined up to $1,000 and up to 90

Humane-Watch.org, a project of the non-profit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) called on the Federal Trade Commission to open an investigation into the deceptive fundraising practices of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). A recent Freedom of Information act request revealed that more than 120 complaints have been filed with the FTC since December 2011 regarding HSUS. Dozens of the complaints came from Americans who have given money to HSUS. HSUS’ deceptive advertising helps fool the unsuspecting public: a recent analysis found that more than 85 percent of the animals in HSUS’ TV appeals between January 2009 and September 2011 were cats and dogs, when just 1 percent of the money donated to HSUS is sent to hands-on pet shelters, according to HSUS tax returns. “This is deception on a national level, and the FTC needs to act now,” said J. Justin Wilson, CCF’s senior research analyst. A person who walks in another’s track leaves no footprints. Feral hogs are ravaging eastern New Mexico’s range and farmland. An astonishing reproductive rate has seen hogs spread to 17 of New Mexico’s 33 counties. One farmer says he has shot over 300 of the wild hogs. They have caused his wheat, milo and sorghum fields to look like they have been bombed by the military, there are huge craters everywhere. It is said, there are only two kinds of farmers in the state, those who have feral hogs and those that will. It is reported that Texas has up to 2 million of the hairy beasts, about half the total U. S. population of feral hogs and they cause about $400 million in damage each year in the state. The hogs carry more than 20 diseases and have wiped out herds of domestic livestock. They also contaminate water supplies. Eradication plans lack manpower and resources for implemention. More public support is needed. A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something. Plans are in place to re-open the many times failed, Tama Pack, Tama, IA. The plan is to open on a limited basis and grow from there. However, the cattle population in this country is down to the same number as 1952, so there is already a huge shortage of cattle to kill. It is expected that several existing older plants will close before cattle numbers grow back to a higher level. Custom slaughter for specialized beef brands looks to be the only chance for the Iowa’s plants success. I hope they make it. n

Tyson Likely to Close Denison and Expand Dakota City by Evan Rayl

Years ago, fat cattle were sold in central stockyards in Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, St. Joseph, Sioux City and Minneapolis with packers located at the edge of the yards so cattle could simply be driven directly to kill floors in packing plants. Then in 1961, Iowa Beef Packers built a single plant in a cornfield near Denison, Iowa. It was a slaughter-only operation and is still operating today. The other huge change ushered in, along with the plant, was cutting carcasses into sub-primals and shipping them in a box. Thus began the demise of swinging or hanging beef shipped in refrigerated rail and semi-trailers. In addition, a much more recent development was the move to not

only case-ready ground beef, but also for some beef cuts. Now 50 years later, the Denison plant, owned by Tyson, is close to being closed. A newer and larger plant only 70 miles away and also owned by Tyson in Dakota City, across the River from Sioux City is probably going to expand to take the place of the kill operation in Denison. Expansion of the Dakota City plant is already underway with completion scheduled for mid-2013. As time has continued on, fewer and fewer cattle are being fed in the Denison area, making the closing of the Denison plant more likely. At the same time, more cattle are being fed near the Dakota City plant, thus increasing the volume of cattle available to the newer plant and the new kill floor that will replace areas in the plant that are almost 50 years old. Other changes will incorporate the latest sanitation and production systems. More changes will benefit animal handling, food safety, meat quality and workplace safety. Additional changes will improve the plant’s box handling system by installing additional conveyors and other equipment that will make many jobs less physically demanding. Dakota City is Tyson’s largest beef processing complex with approximately 4,000 employees and a payroll of $140 million. In 2011, Tyson

Great Legs Don’t Just Happen

How many shows have you been to where you hear the judge make a comment on how well a calf is fit? It is something that we all wish we could do really well, in hopes that someday that comment will be directed toward our calf. It takes a lot of practice and knowledge to be able to groom the way the pro’s do. Spending time going to clinics, camps, shows and watching professionals fit will give you a wealth of knowledge. Here are some tips that we hope will help you. It is very important to train the leg hair at home before you start to show your calf. Brush the leg hair forward and straight up in the front of the legs. A roto brush is a great tool to train the leg hair, be sure to work it all forward and not upward. Before you start to glue the legs, you want to blow them out. Start with Prime Time adhesive and spray a light coat. Stay about 8 to 10 inches away from the

leg. Spraying a small area and then combing through right after. Right from the hoof up. Comb the front of the leg at a 45 degree angle forward and upward, then the center of the outside of the leg straight up and forward just a tick, the back of the leg at a 45 degree angle upward. Keep working through the hair with your comb, gluing small amounts until you have pulled all the hair up. See diagram #1. Do the same on the inside of the leg. The front legs are done basically the same way; only you want to make sure that where the hair meets in the front, has to be lined up with the center of the hoof. If it is not, your animal may appear to either toe in or out. See diagram #2. Next go back and apply a light coat of Tail Adhesive to set the hair a little more. Be sure with the Tail Adhesive stay back from the leg and apply small amounts at a time to prevent the hair from gumDiagram 2 ming up. Pick through the hair with a skip tooth comb, to make any adjustments in pulling the hair to where you want it. (Then add) The wizard comb was introduced to the market and it has improved the look of the leg even more. When you use the wizard Comb you will be able to pull up even more of the leg hair, add more volume, and it will also remove the lines caused by the other comb. You still use the same method of bringing the hair up to begin with, but before you are finished completely with the adhesive, use the Wizard comb to get a fuller and smoother look! The next step is to clip the long hair that is not within the straight lines that you are trying to create. You want to make the leg appear straighter, the joints to appear smaller, and the bone to appear bigger. Do the same inside and out. Be sure to clip down the pasterns so when the animal walks, it will not appear to pop in the pasterns. Also clip down the hocks, so the animal appears wider based. Diagram 3 When clipping the front legs you want to clip them so they are not straight, but curved almost like a banana shape. See Diagram #3. Being sure to clip the inside of the front knee, to make the animal appear wider based. These next steps are where you need to check the rules of the show. If you are not allowed to paint, you need to stop here. If the rules say you can paint, then apply another light coat of Tail Adhesive pulling through the hair using a skip tooth comb lightly. Clip again if needed. Then paint brown and then black (only if your animal is black of course.) With all the hard work that you put in to growing and training leg hair you want to be sure to treat it right and get all the glue and oil out after each show as soon as possible. We recommend either Hocus Pocus or we are really impressed with It’s Gone by EZ All. If you have any questions, feel free to call. Karen McCullough (641)344-5566

FYI

Cattle Pregnancy Diagnosis

Helping to Manage Cattle Reproduction by Dr. Don Coover, DVM

A relatively new pregnancy diagnosis tool for cattle producers is becoming more widely available, and more widely used. This tool, called BioPRYN for Bio (P)regnancy (R)uminant (Y)es (N)o, takes advantage of new technologies that enable laboratories to inexpensively and very accurately test blood samples from cattle to determine their pregnancy status. As a veterinarian, I am frequently asked by producers to palpate their cattle for pregnancy. While rectal palpation is routinely used to determine pregnancy status, it is very difficult to accurately diagnose pregnancy earlier than 30 days and it is my experience most producers don’t get enough practice to accurately diagnose pregnancy much earlier than 65 to 70 days. It is also my experience that some producers (probably most) are rough enough to injure or abort some very early pregnancies they can’t detect, but try to. Ultrasound, which we routinely use around the clinic, is accurate at 30 days, but does require some experience, requires a power source and can break down, requiring expensive repairs. The machine itself is also very expensive. Hiring a veterinarian to diagnose pregnancy is a good solution, but can be a challenge to schedule, and can be cost prohibitive if you have to hire a vet, haul cows somewhere, or pay for a service call to get the vet out. What is needed is a test that is accurate, inexpensive, little or no training necessary, which a producer can use at his convenience. The BioPRYN test detects proteins that are produced only by placental tissues, and can be found in the circulating blood stream of pregnant (or recently pregnant) cows only. This test uses ELISA technology to detect these proteins as a method of early pregnancy diagnosis in cattle. The proteins are a reliable indicator of pregnancy status from day 28 of gestation, and thereafter. It is important to remember that proteins produced by the placental tissues do not disappear immediately after the cow gives birth, so testing for pregnancy sooner than 73 days after a cow calves may detect protein in the bloodstream from the previous pregnancy, and give a false positive result. By waiting 73 days after calving, and at least 28 days after breeding, to take a blood sample for pregnancy diagnosis, false positive and false negative results can be avoided. It is possible

of course, to have a cow abort a pregnancy, and in that case, you could accurately diagnose a cow pregnant that does not present a calf. If this happens, it may indicate a herd health issue that needs investigation, such as the presence of a persistently infected BVD animal. To take advantage of this technology to pregnancy check animals, the producer needs to obtain a blood sample from the animals he wants to know the pregnancy status on. Tail bleeding is convenient and easy. I have taught many producers to tail bleed, and they pick it up easily. Bleeding from the jugular neck vein is even easier, but takes more time to halter a cow and pull her head to one side. The lab needs 2 to 3 cc of blood to run the test, and the blood should be in a clot tube (a red topped tube). When sending samples into a lab, it is not necessary to send them on ice, as the protein is very stable. Bundle the tubes together with rubber bands, 10 to 15 in a bundle, or send the tubes in the boxes the tubes are sold in. Package the tubes securely, with enough paper towels surrounding the tubes to absorb all the liquid should the tubes be broken, and send in the mail, UPS, or FED EX. It will take a lab several hours to run the test after delivery of the tubes and the test is set up. Our lab tests samples Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with results available the next afternoon. Samples are delivered via mail, FED EX or UPS, or in person. We report results to producers via the phone, or fax, or mail, or via the internet. The cost of the test is $2.60 per blood sample. Cost of supplies to take the sample is about 30 cents, which includes the blood tube, and a clean needle and syringe. Accurate identification of the animal sample is important for accurate reporting of results. The popularity of this test has been increasing by leaps and bounds. Used at least 28 days after breeding and at least 73 days after calving (which means you can breed at 45 days post calving and test at 73 days post calving), this test is the cheapest, safest, easiest, most convenient, most accurate, early pregnancy test available. Our lab runs several thousand blood pregnancy tests every month for a wide variety of producers, from many different states. This pregnancy test is an excellent example of a new technology that is helping cattle producers do a better, more efficient job raising cattle. When producers ask me to show them how to preg check cows, now I show them how to take a blood sample, how to package the tubes, and tell them where to ship them to. They get accurate results, safely, inexpensively, early in the pregnancy, and on their own schedule. If you have questions, or want further information, or need supplies, please contact us at SEK Genetics, 1-800-443-6389. Ask for me, Dr. Don Coover, DVM, or the lab technician, Wendy Triebel. n

Don’t Jump Start Cows By Toby Muller

Besides the green grass I think the best part of spring is all the new babies. I don’t get to calve out cows anymore but I’ve been able to get my baby fix this spring, nonetheless. Followed by a wonderfully cute litter of puppies, God gave us Jaxson Jeremey on the morning of March 9th. Both of these events were highly anticipated, but as the puppies got older they became a lot more work and it got lot easier each day to think about them becoming someone else’s dog. At this point, we are hopeful that Jaxson will become a little lower maintenance very soon. Especially since Casie just informed me today that he doesn’t mind a bottle at all, so night duty for me may become a reality very soon. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to cope either way, breeding season has once again snuck up on us and I doubt my wife will have any sympathy at 2 a.m. just because I “claimed to have worked hard” that day. Speaking of breeding season, this one won’t be any different from any of the others for the fact that we’re going to try to get everyone better conception rates this year. The two most important controllable factors for getting cows bred, in my humble opinion, are nutrition and days “post-partum”. Since we’ve touched on nutrition a little, I think it’s worth mentioning the latter of the two. Over the last few years, it seems like everyone is talking about “jump-starting” cows and sometimes even bragging about how early they got one to cycle and stick. While I have no doubt that sometimes these practices can work, or seem to, I think there are many more cows that move backwards because of our aggressiveness. When I was at Nichol’s Farms, it seemed like the best way to move a

recipient cow up in her cycle was to get her out of the recipient herd and out on green grass with a bull. It was amazing how many of those cows would move up the next year and then take embryos the next year. In contrast, I also remember some of the worst conception rate years I had, and the common theme was the fact that I had gotten greedy when sorting cows to put cidrs in. For example, let’s quick do some dumb farmer math because that’s the only kind I know. If you put cidrs in cows that are 60 days postpartum, you are asking those cows to move up, or gain 10 days in their calving interval, and if 50 days postpartum is your cutoff then you’re asking the cows to move up a whole cycle. If I’m not mistaken, a pathfinder cow in the Angus breed is a cow that maintains at least a 375-day calving interval and weans a 105 ratio average calf 3 years in a row. Those cows can actually lose 10 days on average and still qualify. I don’t know if this puts any perspective to this or not, but it seems to me that we’re asking more of our recipient cows than we do of our elite purebreds. In conclusion, I don’t think we should stop demanding more from our cattle. We just need to keep in perspective what we are really asking our cows to do and what are the consequences are if things don’t go as planned. Next time you try to “jump-start” cows buy sticking hormones into them, think about the total cost involved. After you’ve figured up the supplies, labor, and loss of embryos/semen, make sure to add in the extra open and “later” cows. It’s hard to put a number on it, but I bet if you get more realistic expectations of your recipient cows they’ll become more profitable for you in the end. So this year, don’t get greedy. Give those later cows the year off and a chance to move up naturally with the bull or keep pushing them and figure out a way to bring more cows in to fallout. -Toby1n HartstackTrucking:Layout 1 replace 7/17/11the8:48 AM Page

Walkie Talkie wont need to be protected on structure and belly like the other’s from this genetic line. Use Walkie Talkie on cows that have worked to this genetic line in the past but, expect sounder, chubbier made cattle and much better results!

Walkie Talkie was the biggest butted, softest made, squarest built, whistle fronted and soundest Walks Alone son ever.

Here he is, The Man Among Boys in Denver. Several comments were received declaring Walkie Talkie as one of the best bulls to ever be displayed in Denver. Including Korky Wise, who needs no introduction to raising Texas and Oklahoma champions.

The most talked about Monopoly son, Denver 2011. Monopoly Money excels in terms of depth of flank, length of neck, look, bone and foot size. He would have made an awesome showsteer, but we kept this one intact. His pedigree has traces of Chill Factor and New Design Angus fro his mother. Females by Monopoly Money should be equally as valuable as the males. His sire, Monopoly has proven himself as a consistent sire of quality cattle and we think this young standout will continue that tradition.

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!" ~Robin Williams Commentary

One Cow Per Acre by Evan Rayl

Last month, in Livestock Plus, you read about the need for 6 million more cows in the USA, IF and that’s a big IF, they are high quality cows capable of producing Premium Choice and/or Prime quality carcasses, according to Scott Brown, livestock economist for the University of Missouri. He says, “that’s exactly what producers need to do as we rebuild the nation’s cowherd. Our future depends on it.” That’s the quality of beef consumers want to buy on this planet. Right now record quantities of our beef are going overseas because our dollar is so cheap. Plus, there will be a greater need for this quality of beef as our economy comes back. Additionally, there will be a need for the proper number of bulls with Premium Choice and/or Prime beef quality to mate to those cows. There is a place to put part of these 6 million cows. That’s to restock the areas of this country where drought has occurred in recent years. Of course, those people can’t even think of rebuilding until rain comes. But what about the rest of the cows Brown is calling for? The demand for land to use for other purposes is at an all time high. With land prices this high, the only way to solve this problem is to increase forage production on existing pastures. Pastures in the Midwest are capable of producing at a high level. I have

one tract where we are running a cow to the acre and another tract where we are working toward this goal. There are several steps to attain this goal, most of which take more time than money. Now is the time to make plans for these improvements as we are coming into spring. Here’s how to do it, assuming the pasture is currently bromegrass and/or orchard grass: 1. Test and apply adequate lime. Check with the Extension Service for the right ph level for your pasture. Take lime samples every five years to see if you need to add more lime. 2. Test for fertility and add fertilizer as needed. Spread a thick layer of manure if possible or use N, P, and K if you have to do so. Manure is best because of the added organic matter. 3. Divide the pasture into at least 4 paddocks, and no more than 12. Use a combination of hi-tensile fencing for permanent paddocks and step in posts and plastic wire fencing for temporary paddocks. With the exception of perimeter fence use temporary fence as you plan the layout of paddocks. As you see how your paddock system will work the best you can switch to hi-tensile fencing. 3. Interseed clover. The Extension Service has pamphlets describing the different ways to do so. Red clover takes fairly easy, but you won’t always have success, but keep on trying. After you get red clover established, you can let a paddock go to seed every few years. That will really add more clover to the mix. Keep in mind a good stand of clover will produce 100 pounds of nitrogen, which in turn really gives the brome and/ or orchard a huge boost. Without ever seeding any, you will end up with some white clover. It, of course, doesn’t grow as big as red clover, so it isn’t as good, but is hard to keep out. 4. Kill weeds with a weedwiper. Several different types of weedwipers are available. You can spend a lot on one or very little. A rope, sponge, or roller wiper will all work. I had the best of all, mine was given to me. Use

it a day or two after you remove cows from a paddock when the pasture is the shortest. There are any number of different kinds of equipment. I have a 10 foot long 3 inch diameter plastic pipe with a rope wick mounted on the front of my 4-wheeler. My wiper is height adjustable. I can cover 10 acres an hour with this outfit. I know now that one can cover far more acres per hour, if the weed wiper is mounted on the front of the 4-wheeler. I mix a quart of chemical to four gallons of water to fill my weed wiper. Because I have all five of these on hand, I mix some of each of them together in the quart container: Milestone, 2,4-D, Tordon, Crossbow, and Roundup. Just the littlest bit of this combination mixed with 4 gallon of water will kill the biggest weed. The weedwiper is the key to this system because you can not broadcast spray or you will kill the clover and the dung beetles. Introduce dung beetles to the pasture. The beetles live in cow piles, causing the piles to decompose more rapidly, thus adding to the fertility of the pastures. Never ever broadcast spray your pasture, you will kill both the clover and the dung beetles. Where do you get dung beetles? Just find someone who has them and ask to bring home a few active cow piles to spread around your pasture. The population will increase over time to the maximum level needed. 6. This past summer we had good rains for five months and almost no rain for two months, and still we had way more forage than the cows could eat with one cow per acre. Once you get the fertility built up, paddocks in place, clover inter-seeded, and the weed population cut down, you will have almost an unbelievable amount of forage. This system will allow you to double the size of your cow herd. Carrying a cow per acre is a reasonable goal. All cattle producers can be profitable if they maintain a Hi-Quality carcass beef herd. There are more and more of these genetics available every year. n

Oh, how I love going to the Ohio Beef Expo! Seriously, Sam Sutherly and his entire staff did an amazing job! Stephanie Sindel, thank you for making my trade show experience one of the best!! I really hated for it to end! On my way to the airport, I was thinking that I wasn’t ready for it be over. I’m pretty sure I jinxed myself! First, my flight was delayed from a tornado warning, then we had to deplane because they had to do a hail check. We were able to reboard but then we had to deplane again and then I was sent to a hotel for the night. I have to say though, that going without my kids was painful! I tried to borrow and possibly just take home Rick and Kim Poff’s twin girls, Taylor and Tatum. They are just the sweetest little girls! I loved that Taylor always wore purple and Tatum wore pink. That was way easier for me and the exact opposite of my Taylor!! I love meeting so many new people. I’m pretty sure I now have a new little boyfriend, Alex. Parents, don’t worry, I am only teasing! Alex and his brother, Austin from Double A Ranch, came by my booth a couple times and both are very handsome boys. However, Alex age 7, was just hilarious. You could just see the ornery in his eyes! He would just circle my booth, which of course, had a couple other girls besides myself in it. I think he kinda enjoyed the attention a little bit. I just have to say I truly enjoy my visits to Ohio! Every year I find fabulous new friends and of course I cherish all my friendships! We had birthday parties for the parents at our favorite restaurant from my childhood, The Redwoods in Anita, Iowa. That is what happens when you let my sister, Mandi, and I make the decisions!! I won’t, or maybe I should say I can’t, mention Mom’s age but Dad had a huge milestone this year…60! The reason I don’t mention Mom’s birthday is because she scares me! Let me just say that my mom is pretty quiet and a very kind and loyal person. She is a little woman but to all who know her, you also know you do not cross her! I made the mistake of putting her age on the birthday cake I madeTanks:Layout them. Yikes, she looked at9:04 me AM and with very serious, low Insulated 1 3/19/12 Pagea 1 voice says, “Oh, paybacks Heidi, paybacks….” Well, I just don’t like where

this is going because my birthday is in a couple months and the woman puts the fear of God in me! As far as Dad is concerned, heck, he usually says he is older than what he is because he forgets. I got to thinking that 60 is quite a milestone! As many of you know, Dad and I butt heads just a little (okay, that may be an understatement), but I have been told it is because we are so very much alike. Although I joke that he drives me to drink, it is one of the biggest compliments I could ever receive. I know he realizes that no matter the accomplishments he has gotten in the last 60 years, he is pretty blessed to have a family and friends that think the world of him. As always, please keep our military and the future of our nation in your thoughts and prayers. Travel safe and let us know if we can help you find any of that hard to find semen. There are some pretty rockin’ semen distributors in here this month! Heidi Sorensen-Sloth 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com P.S. Dad wrote about these bars in his article. They are really great! Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars by Greta White 1 (18.25) package plain yellow cake mix 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 cup creamy peanut butter 2 eggs 1 (12 oz) package semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 2 Tablespoons butter 2 teaspoons vanilla Directions: 1) Preheat oven to 325 degrees. 2) Combine cake mix, melted butter, peanut butter, and eggs in a large bowl using a mixer or spoon.
