Introduction We do love our fun in the sun here at After Hours. We’ve always got plenty of news from Ibiza (p10 & 13) and this edition we even bring you an exclusive report on California’s hottest festival Coachella (p15) but, as much as we look forward to our get aways, we’re a Liverpool magazine at heart and, this edition, we’ve decided to go all out in celebration of that fact. Yep, it’s edition 5 already kids. Liverpool has embraced us and so, Liverpool, we’re hugging you right back with After Hours – The Home Grown Edition. We, as always, get the party started in our Places section, where there’s all the latest Liverpool venue news. Since the sun has got his hat on (or he did on the day I wrote this – there’s every chance he’s hiding back behind a cloud now) we bring you our recommendations for Liverpool’s Best Beer Gardens (p8). We are thrilled to welcome Liverpool DJ, producer and promotor Yousef onto our cover this edition; Larissa chats to him about life, Liverpool and Circus on page 16. Hot on his heels we also catch up with local DJ’s L.A.W. (p22) and Mick Willow (p25). Then, as we approach Merseyside’s biggest festival, we quiz Dave Whelan on his impending Creamfields début (p19). And - he might not be a local lad but he’s about to play one of the city’s best loved clubs – we meet Kim Fai ahead of his Garlands set. That’s a whole load of Liverpool exclusives, just for you. Don’t forget to check out www.afterhoursmag.co.uk for a whole lot more. Enjoy! Gill Torres Editor

Genting, the UK’s largest casino operator, is in the midst of an exciting major refurbishment of its Queen Square club. The refurbishment is costing upwards of £2 million and will see the creation of an entirely new 360 degree bar located on a mezzanine floor above the gaming area. The new Cai Bar will serve a wide variety of champagne and cocktails, all of which have been selected to reflect the contemporary new offer. The new bar area will be finished to the highest quality with private booths, dance floor, a DJ booth and screens to watch live sport. This first phase of the refurb will complete by mid June, when the bar will open to the public and you can call in for a sneak peek and a cheeky cocktail in advance of the VIP launches of the entire project. Phase 2 of the overhaul will see a new contemporary restaurant, Fahrenheit Grill, added to Genting Club. The restaurant will serve quality dishes from a bespoke menu, utilising locally sourced produce wherever possible and making Genting the perfect destination for a lavish night on the town. With

everything from food, to cocktails, to gaming all under one roof you can wear your highest heels for this one girls because you won’t have to walk anywhere! Right now the refurbishment process continues and the facilities remain open, with gaming and poker tournaments continuing throughout the development.. Closely following the opening of Cai Bar, the transformation will be complete in August of this year, after which the Club will be open 24 hours a day. General Manager of Genting Club Queen Square, Carole Poulson, said: “We have invested heavily in the design and creation of the new-look club to provide guests with a quality, contemporary leisure destination in the heart of the city. The development of the brand new Cai bar, along with the extensive refurbishment of the existing facilities, will complement our first class gaming and poker offering and enhance our overall reputation as one of Liverpool’s premier entertainment and leisure destinations.” We say, it all sounds good to us and we can’t wait to try the new cocktails. Lucha Libre By Gill Torres Wonderful new Mexican street-food restaurant and bar, Lucha Libre, has opened its doors on Wood Street.

Alex, 34, said: “We wanted to share our experiences [of Mexico] with people here in Liverpool and in doing so, deliver real Mexican food tastes and an insight into the culture that goes with it. The majority of our food is slow cooked or marinated for many hours and we hope you can taste just how much love goes into it.” In my opinion, you can tell how much love has gone into the whole place as soon as you step inside. Every last bit of décor is meaningful and packed with wonderful detail. Authentic cocktails are served with pride and, well, the head chef, Luis Michel, was the

Brainchild of directors Alex Hannah and Dave Roche, the venue offers a restaurant upstairs and a late bar, Maya, on its lower level. Lucha Libre also has a taco stand, serving quick and healthy food on the move from an opening at the side of the restaurant. Phi Bar & Grill Formerly the Medway in West Derby Village, the fabulous new Phi Bar & Grill has now opened up, tempting us out of our city centre bubble with its theme of ‘Asian fusion with a Thai twist’.... and its promises of quality bottles of house wine for just £13! Award winning head chef Andy Lamb has come all the way from Yorkshire to put all his expertise, gained from having run his own restaurant for many years, into serving up chilli and pepper squid to die for, perfect BBQ ribs and the house’s most popular dish, crispy beef. On top of that, Phi also boasts a daily grill offering steak, fish and chicken, making it a ‘must try’, and with surprisingly reasonable prices. Here’s a little fact for you: The Medway was used as a Chinese restaurant in the feature film Act of

Grace which, coincidently, has just been released on Amazon! So now you can buy the movie OR you can see fiction become fact at Phi Bar and Grill in West Derby (far more tasty!). @PhiBarWestDerby / 0151 345 4348 Unit 2-7 Almonds Grove, Liverpool L12 5HP (next to Hare & Hounds Pub)

LIVERPOOL’S BEST BEER GARDENS By Gill Torres

5 o’clock rolls around finally, the sun is out, you’ve worked hard all day and you deserve a beer in the sunshine. So where do you head? Where are the best beer gardens, terraces and other outdoor spaces to have a drink in Liverpool? With the help of friends, Twitter followers and years of hands on research of our own, we can tell you. Here is the After Hours guide to al fresco boozing in Liverpool. We don’t settle for any old beer garden here in Liverpool. When the sun comes out it seems that many of us head to our own World Heritage Site

08

AFTERHOURS

– The Albert Dock – to get our booze on. And why wouldn’t we? As well as being part of our waterfront World Heritage Site, Albert Dock is home to many of the city’s most salubrious bars, including Circo, Blue and PanAm, amongst others. On a warm evening you can watch the sun glint off the water, sip your G&T, or your lovely glass of vino from Vinea Wine Bar, without a care, before heading to one of Albert Dock’s many fabulous restaurants to celebrate the summer in style. Who needs the Med when we have this gem on our doorstep? Albert Dock. Best for: Sunday afternoon, post shopping at Liverpool ONE. You’ll feel as though you’re on your holidays (and we know, we’ve tried it – often).

Places t Speaking of Liverpool ONE, the terrace that opens up onto Chavasse Park, upstairs at Liverpool ONE, is our second recommended destination for a spot of fun in the sun. It’s cocktail o’clock when we head in this direction and while the whole place – from Yee Rah to Palm Sugar with plenty in between – has a fantastic atmosphere and loads to offer, we suggest that you try some classic, Latin cocktails at Las Iguanas to really taste the summer. Liverpool ONE. Best for: a well deserved cocktail, Friday night after work. Coming away from the waterfront there is one big-old beer terrace that stands out as THE place to head for a pint in the sunshine. You guessed it, Concert Square is our next outdoor destination of choice. It’s no surprise that Concert Square was recommended by our social network as one of the best inner city places to have a drink. A favourite, particularly with the students of our city, for many years, Concert Square has more bars than you could shake a stick at (no, we don’t really know what that expression means either... it just has a huge choice of bars, ok?). With Modo serving directly onto the terrace, you don’t even need to go inside to get a beer. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Concert Square. Best for: a Saturday afternoon session.

If you’re looking for the beer garden path less trodden, you’re in luck. There are plenty of beautiful little terraces in the city centre if you know where to look. Ye Cracke, tucked away on Rice Street, has a great beer garden and was actually a favourite haunt of John Lennon – not a bad recommendation for any venue. It’s still going strong and is never more popular than on a sunny day. Peacock on Seel Street not only has plenty of space to sit in the sun but it also, more often than not, serves FREE FOOD on a Friday after work. You just can’t ask for more than that. And finally, did you know that The Monro on Duke Street has a beer garden? Until very recently we’d mainly spent time in The Monro during the winter, snuggled up in front of their open fire with a pint and a big piece of cake. Imagine how pleased we were to discover that this gastro pub and purveyor of fabulous grub is just as great in the summer time, with a light, bright and beautiful beer garden out the back! We know where we’ll be off to this Sunday. Hidden beer gardens. Best for: a pubcrawl of discovery. Where’s your favourite spot for outdoor drinking in the city? Tweet us @afterhoursmag with your recommendations so we can pass on the knowledge!

fountains, a counter current jet pool, a relaxation pool, a feng hui pool, flotariums, a relaxation area with colour therapy, an outside relaxation area and a tea bar! Treat yourself to a volcanic stone massage, revitalizing seaweed and almond solutions or other oriental rituals. We’ve also heard that the immensely successful M Wellness gym is taking up its new residence at Aguas this summer. Situated in Cala Nova, this beach club will reflect Atzaro hotels unique cuisine, immaculate service and exclusive entertainment. www.deliciouslysortedibiza.com

Deliciously Sorted’s Hot Picks Summer 2012 The Nightclub Ibiza Rocks: Not just a hotel Ibiza Rocks is one of the most popular young hotels on the island. Situated in San Antonio, with the best sunset views on the island, this hotel puts on world renowned rock and roll acts every Wednesday. This summer we are seeing artists such as Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Plan B, Chase & Status, Paolo Nutini and Tinie Tempah. If you have the chance to stop by, don’t forget to try to charm your way into one of the afterparties! (Opening Party 6th June – Ed Sheeran) The Restaurant Aura: It has it all! Aura is one of our all time favourite places! Situated on the long windy “restaurant” road from Ibiza town to the Northern village of San Joan, you’ll find Aura immersed in trees and green. Aura is a spectacular restaurant, a chilled cocktail bar and an exciting nightclub all rolled into one. Enjoy a delicious meal, followed by a tailor-made cocktail from the best mixologist on the island and a shake on the dance floor! (Open every day)

The Hotel Pikes: The Legend… Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes is a 500 year old Ibicencan finca. Because of its exquisitely lavish, unique and flamboyant design, it has attracted many famous rock’n’rollers over the years. If you don’t come to stay here, we’d recommend stopping by for their Sunday Roast, which is the locals favourite! Be sure to ask for a quick tour to see all the old photos of the various celebrities and film stars that have been Pikes guests over the years. The staff can tell many interesting stories..(Open May-October) The Beach Club Tropicana: Club Tropicana ;) We’re sure that everyone has told you to visit the Blue Marlin if going to Ibiza, but what about its neighbours? Tropicana on Cala Yondal is a superb beach club often overlooked as it´s much more chilled than its ‘full on party´ neighbour. Enjoy cocktails on your sunloungers, paella in their restaurant with a table in the sand, a massage after lunch and a swim in crystal clear turquoise waters. Heaven.. and the perfect way to spend a recovery day. (Open every day) Pictured from top left clockwise: Ibiza Rocks, Aura, Pikes, Tropicana.

GET THAT MARBELLA BODY: WITH UNIQUE FITNESS ACADEMY “I’ve done my job for 14 years, I love it, I’m very passionate about my work and I thrive on watching people achieve results.” These are the words of Sarah, owner and head trainer at Unique Fitness Academy – the woman helping Liverpool to hone and tone in time for a summer on the beach. It’s that time of year party people – you might feel more at home in the bar than in the gym but as thoughts turn to sunshine, Liverpool guys and girls are staging a mass exodus to Europe. One thing’s for certain, where there’s suntan lotion, sand and

sangria, there is absolutely nowhere to hide from excess pounds. If you’re not quite ready to shed the layers. Here’s Sarah’s expert advice. “The quickest way to achieve results is to do a lot of interval, core and plyometric training. That and strip the carbs out of your diet. This will shift inches fast and have you looking in tip top condition ready to party.” One such party person hoping to look his best on the beach is our very own, Director of After Hours, Paul Burgess. He’s at the beginning of his training journey... but we’ll be back in 6 weeks for an update!

Paul: My Goals Well my neck’s on the line now isn’t it? Obviously I volunteered to be the guinea pig to guilt myself into getting in shape for my hols and there’s nowhere to hide now this is in print! Before my holiday at the end of July I want to improve my fitness levels, gain a better understanding of nutrition in relation to my training and increase my lean muscle mass. In session one Sarah managed to push me so far that I went arse over tit while attempting to jump over a tire... let’s say I had ‘fitness issues’. By session two though I was more prepared for it and definitely felt loads better, so bring it on! Sarah: The Training Programme Paul’s programme is tailored to achieving results in time for his holiday. I’ve told him what he needs to eat to compliment his training and I’m seeing him twice a week. I will keep every session completely different, so it stays interesting and challenging while, at the same time, working towards his goals. I started Paul off with plyometrics - form of exercise that burns hundreds more calories in a shorter space of time than regular training, raising the heart more rapidly. Two sessions in I can already see improvement!

AFTERHOURS GLOBAL: COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL By Larissa Wignall

In April I headed, with giddy anticipation, deep into the Californian desert for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. My first impression was, simply, wow ; a stunning backdrop of art installations and desert scape played host to a chilled out, hippy utopia of high-fives and hugging with the perfect soundtrack. Typically Californian, Coachella had plenty of healthy food stalls, including its own farmers market, fresh fruit stands and water stations galore (because, as it turns out, alcohol and 100 degree heat just don’t mix). You could while away your days with yoga and pilates, or take part in dodgeball tournaments and pinball championships – to name the more typically American of the activities on offer. And so, I come to the music. On day one I was fortunate enough to clap eyes on R3hab, Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Mazzy Star, Afrojack and M83, then round it all off nicely with a hearty helping of Swedish House Mafia, who brought the full show, complete with fireworks. Day two heralded The Vaccines, Kaiser Chiefs, Martin Solveig, Noel Gallagher, Kasabian, Bon Iver (rapidly

becoming my new favourite band following their spine tingling performance of Skinny Love) and Radiohead, who were just plain incredible! Then, what a final day it was. I watched The Hives, Calvin Harris and Florence & the Machine (who brought a cheeky tear to my eye). The grand finale was grand indeed. We thought we were rocking up to see just Dr.Dre & Snoop Dogg (as though the word ‘just’ were even appropriate there) only to be bowled over by performances from Wiz Kalhifa, Eminem, 50 Cent and 2Pac! Yes, you read it right, 2 Pac returned from the dead for one day only – that’s what I call a spectacle. The incredibly life-like hologram of the man himself was absolutely mind blowing! If you are thinking of going to Coachella next year I have two words for you – do it! It genuinely is a life changing festival where you will find people from all walks of life, uniquely styled and watching the best of the best music artists around under the Californian sunshine. EXCLUSIVE

YOUSEF’S CIRCUS

t

By Larissa Wignall

Having showcased his skills at some of the best international venues around, Yousef is no stranger to the lime light. We caught up with the DJ, music producer and promoter for one of Europe’s top clubbing events, Circus, on the eve of his Bank Holiday Sunday extravaganza at The Masque. As he graced the decks for his monthly event, alongside James Zabiela, Adam Beyer, Heidi, Catz n Dogz, Lewis Boardman and Scott Lewis we asked him about music making, longevity and Liverpool. So, Circus recently had a slight detour and held an event at Camp & Furnace, instead of at The Masque. How did the two venues differ for you? It was such an amazing party and a refreshing space to work in but it was a lot harder to throw the event at Camp & Furnace, as we don’t know the venue. The Masque is the heartbeat of Circus but I did enjoy Camp & Furness too. Now you have the keys to The Masque again you must be pleased. Yes, very! We are working towards an even better Masque for 2012. Who are you looking forward to playing alongside on Bank Holiday Sunday? For me it has to be Heidi. She is such a great girl and an accomplished DJ. This is probably going to sound sexist, although it’s not meant to be - she is one of the few female DJ’s that I see as a real player. She rocks it hard and gets stuck into the technical side of mixing, layers and energy, the way bump house should be played. She is good fun girl and an authentic music enthusiast too. Growing up must be a crucial time for any music adherent. Who did you take your inspiration from? It was a mixture of early 80’s Hip-Hop like Roxanne Shante and Grand Master Flash, a lot of New Romantic artists, including Human League, Ultravox and soul music from Marvin Gaye, Prince and Stevie Wonder. I loved early Acid House too and I was hooked from when I was age 15/16. Plus being a DJ was always on my agenda. Bringing it up to today, you’ve produced some remarkable, technical tracks. Where do you establish your ideas from? I listen to a lot of Latin music, 80’s and Soul. I like 16

AFTERHOURS

artists whose tracks tell a story and have a melody. I pay attention to music that I remember for years and years. I listen to a lot of Radio 2/3/6, Classical music and even Smooth and Soul radio. That’s why my take on electronic tracks aim to be music you can remember and grow to love, rather than being a series of drums and white noise. I love that too but, for me, my music has to mean something, as well as having a kick to it. I love Cadenza’s sounds too and I play 90% of what they release. There is such a lot of competition with many DJ’s and producers today, how do you think you differ from the crowd? I want to tell a story with everything I do. I never want to be disposable and I have never really been part of any clique. I do my thing, which is enjoying House, Techno, Soul, Funk, Electronic, and Vocal music. It’s all intended to tastefully ‘wreck dance floors’. I’m happy to play a strange Electronic track if it’s part of me painting the picture and I’m also happy to play a re-edit of Classic’s I’ve Produced. I want to be me rather than copying others and it’s a harder road but the only one there should be. I do nothing better than dj-ing and ‘rocking dance floors’. For me as a DJ, I’m there to entertain and as a Producer, I want to be artistic. With my new album “A Product of Your Environment” I’ve tried to do both. Do you think it’s difficult to have a happy medium between commercial success and musical credibility in today’s dance music world? The thing is… who decides what is what?! I am a club promoter, so I can see the hype machine growing way before the DJ and producer. It’s a hard fact that so many DJ’s, no matter how commercial or credible they are, come and go very quickly. I would honestly say that you need to be the best at what you want to do. I believe that one minute you’re credible and next minute your not. The media and cynical ‘cool kids’ always want to move around and appear to be on top of the music world and changing tastes. My best advice is to be you at all times. So what will we see from you this summer? Will you be blessing the ones and twos at Space for Carl Cox’s party ‘The Revolution’? Yes, five or six times for Carl Cox at Space in Ibiza and it’s my 3rd year as a resident there. Summer wise I am all over the place; Chile, Argentina, China, Korea, America, Russia, Ukraine, various places in Europe and a couple in the UK. It’s a real busy summer for me! Do you have any confirmed dates for the Ibiza closing parties as of yet? Yes, again I’ll be playing at Carl Cox’s closing party, which falls late September. See Yousef this Bank Holiday at The Masque June 3rd. Tickets and information at www.circusclub. co.uk / www.yousef.co.uk

DAVE WHELAN’S CREAMFIELDS DEBUT Creamfields is, undoubtedly, one of the most hotly anticipated festivals of the summer and we’re lucky enough to have it happen right here on our doorstep. As a lover of the dance music scene I’ve had some amazing times at Creamfields over the years, so I’m happy to be able to say that 2012 will see me play the festival for the first time. The anticipation began to build as soon as myself and Di Scala were approached by the organisers and asked to play this year’s Creamfields – we, of course, said ‘yes’. As it looms ever closer excitement is building to fever pitch - we can’t wait to get out there in front of the crowds, as well as to see some of the other amazing acts on the line up. People ask me how I prepare for a big gig like Creamfields (in fact, After Hours asked me to include a bit about preparation in this article). The truth is,

we’ll prepare for this the same way that we always do. We plan to go out there, be ourselves and do what we do best. That’s why people turn out to see us and, ultimately, how we got the gig in the first place. Creamfields takes place 24th, 25th and 26th August 2012. Tickets and info are available from www. creamfields.com A few dates for your diary: - Saturday 14th July – Whelan & Di Scala Boat Party Liverpool - Monday July 30th, Monday 6th August, Monday 13th August - Whelan & Di Scala Boat Parties Ibiza Tickets for all these events are available from 3B Records. Diary of a ‘Z’ List By Jaiden Micheal

I had a boss bank holiday thanks to Moniques. I had a row with Frankie Cocozza (his fault of course), graced Essex hotspots 195, Nu Bar and Ciroc with my stunningly handsome face and attended the launch of that Amanda Harrington’s new online boutique! God, I need a body double to help me fit all these parties in is Rik Waller available I wonder? I didn’t manage to go to Grand National this year – AGAIN. I’ve still NEVER been! I hear Maria Fowler did really well though, shame I didn’t put a quid on her. As ever it was a day of OTT all the way, with massive hair, even bigger scousebrows and crazy outfits - I personally love all that! Its big, bold and the girls are proud to be themselves. Don’t change for anyone!! I’ve also still not made it to Marbella this year, I just couldn’t imagine myself dressed in white trunks being sprayed by Champagne! It would be like the scene in Dumbo where his maa gets showered by the zoo keeper! I must lose timber 1st.

So lads and ladies, what a month its been on the party scene! I’ve been as busy as Imogen in the Premier League changeys!

I did however attend the launch of Scouse Boutique at Palm Sugar, and what a stunning bar that is! Well done to our girls Gill and Debbie O’Toole and Amanda Harrington. It was a star studded event complete with the funniest catwalk show I’ve ever seen and sponsored by my fave drink; Lambrini! Winner. I couldn’t possibly tell you everything I’ve done since the last edition but there you have the best bits. Until next time! Stay safe... and remember, if in doubt, play dead. PS I am organising a big music charity event on 17th June. Please check out @jaidenofficial for tickets, details etc. x

AFTERHOURS MEETS: L.A.W. By Emma Bassnett

An angelic pair, to look at them, you’d think butter wouldn’t melt but these cheeky, techno-obsessed-siblings from Northern Ireland are breaking all kinds of rules in the electronic dance music scene and have attracted attention from some of the industry’s most recognisable faces. With a brand spanker of an EP set for release next month, it seems that these Irish dancing beauties are the sisters on everyone’s lips. I caught up with Lisa and Alice Wallace, and THIS is the word of the L.A.W. “It all started when my friends bought me decks for my 18th birthday” said Alice, the eldest of the two. I had a dream that Lisa and I were working together as a DJ duo so I called her as soon as I woke up.” To be where they are now is literally a dream come true for the girls. With a series of appearances at some of the world’s most prestigious clubs under their belt, their reality isn’t exactly worlds away from the one they imagined almost a decade ago. 22

“Our greatest achievement to date would be playing a set at Carl Cox’s closing party at Space in Ibiza last year. He has always been such an inspiration to us so we were honoured to receive an invitation to play.” On top of securing residencies in their home town and in Liverpool, the girls have manipulated crime scenes in places like Priviledge, Sankeys, WHP, Eden, Afterlife and EsParadis. Luckily, the pair have always shared the same taste in music and they believe their moral approach to DJing is crucial to being happy. “We only ever play music that we would dance to ourselves. It is really important to stay true to yourself, we just hope that we can make other people dance too.” 2012 promises big things for L.A.W. Not only have they been confirmed to appear at the Amsterdam Dance Event and managed to secure a spot playing next to Grand Master Flash in a festival in NI, but their newest release, the 4 track ‘AWOL EP’ has been snatched up by legendary Angel Alanis’ record label Slap Jaxx and is set for imminent release. All this and the girls are still refusing to let their ascension to success cloud their judgement. ‘We will be spending most of 2012 in the studio. We have decided to focus our efforts on production to define our sound even further. We just love making noise.” www.facebook.com/lawsisterdjs www.soundcloud.com/l-a-w

AFTERHOURS MEETS: Kim Fai By Gina Torres

Tipton born DJ and producer Kim Fai is yet again set to grace our home town with his individual beats, playing at our beloved Garlands. Known for his remixes, Kim has burst onto the circuit causing quite a stir, often playing alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. We caught up with him to find out what he has in store for what is sure to be an epic night. Is this your first time in Liverpool? What are you looking forward to most about coming here? I’ve actually played a few times there. The crowd are always insane so I hope they keep up the reputation! What can we expect from your up and coming garlands set? I’ve got a bunch of new tracks ready for release this year, so there will be lots of Kim Fai exclusives.

How do you decide what makes the cut for your sets? What attracts you to a new tune? I play a lot of my own music. Sometime 90% of a set is my stuff! But when listening to other tracks to put in my sets I look for something I think is going to get a great reaction. That’s the whole point really isn’t it? You want the crowd to have a great time! So far you’ve worked alongside many big names, what’s been the highlight and who else would you love to add to the list? Touring with SHM and Deadmau5 was a great experience. I saw a totally different side of things which really opened my eyes. Not really sure who I’d like to add really. Let’s see what happens! What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to a young DJ wanting to make it big? Is there a secret to standing out from the crowd? Nowadays it’s all about making your own music and having your own style. That’s what really makes you stand out. And obviously lots and lots of hard work. And I’m not talking an hour or so here and there on a weekend. You have to get your mind thinking ‘How did the big DJ’s get so big?’ That’s how much work you need to do. Kim Fai will play Garlands on 29th June. Check Facebook and Skiddle for details, or visit www.garlandsonline.com

KEEP IT LIVERPOOL: A PROFILE OF MICK WILLOW By Andrew Mason As The Queen celebrates her 60 year reign as the head of state, DJ Mick Willow talks us through the journey that brought him to a two-year command as resident of his very own Kingdom - the exclusive, 250 capacity bar/club in the centre of Liverpool. At 26, Willow is no rookie to the DJ scene. He spent his early teens watching DJ’s mix vinyl at his auntie’s bar, he received his first set of belt drives aged 15 and he’s spent the last decade honing his craft; from his first gig at Stanley Street’s ‘Boutique’ to playing in front of a 1,000 strong crowd at Nation, home of club super-brand Cream. Willow has watched clubs come and go, so what places are doing it for him at the moment? “Right now I’d say Kingdom & Garlands are the places to be. I’ve been at Kingdom for over 2 years now and it still locks out every Saturday night without fail and the best thing about it is that I get to play what I want to a crowd that loves it. There’s not many places you can do that in Liverpool to be honest. The best club night is probably Sunshine Sundays. That’s been going for a few years now but only happens on

a Bank Holiday weekend. We do an all day hotel party then go over to the pier head 400 strong and board a three hour boat party - most clubbers will know what I’m on about ;)”. His sound of choice is House and his influences include DJ legends Eric Morillo and each individual member of the Swedish House Mafia. As well as his weekly residency at Kingdom, Willow’s hard work has seen him take stage at Manchester’s Sankey’s, as well as the notorious Garlands boat parties on the island of Ibiza – and there’s plenty more to come. ”I’m going to live in Ibiza for the summer this year. Myself and Ian Longo are hosting our own boat parties. We’re doing two at the end of July & two the start of August. We did one for the closing parties last year and it sold out within days, so we’ve got big expectations for this year. I’ll also be playing over in Marbella this summer but haven’t got any dates finalised yet.” For information on up and coming gigs visit DJ Mick Willow’s website at www.mickwillow.com. Drake After Party @ Circo Roll up roll up roll up!! I walk into Circo for the first time since I finished working here in November and I instantly feel back at home. Everything is still exactly in place - the clown on his fiddle, the hogs head in the DJ booth and the infamous Circo polar bear standing at the bottom of the stairs. Upstairs in the VIP area is extremely busy - local celebrities, professional footballers and anyone who was anyone is here. Waiting for Drake is a nightmare, as always the A list celebs like to make you wait then stroll in near the end of the night not wanting to pose for any pictures, so in the end I decide to just pap him instead!! www.circoliverpool.com

Glitter Bomb @ Circo When I returned to Circo this time it was for a new monthly event called “Glitter Bomb”, which will happen on the first Friday of every month. The most fashionable crowd in Liverpool get together and watch Liverpool’s top designers strut their stuff in the latest Summer fashion from the likes of Francesca Couture, Ben Mak, Peace Boutique and more. The night is hosted by Samantha Woolley (Desperate Scousewives) with Billie Clements (Hed Kandi) on the decks and topped off with a live PA. I had a fantastic night, there was a great atmosphere and and great music. As I packed up my camera I glanced over to the polar bear with a cheeky grin, letting him know I’d be back ;) www.circoliverpool.com

Scouse Boutique Launch @ Palm Sugar As I walk towards this event in my six inch heels cradling my canon camera I feel slightly nervous!! The red carpet is out and there must be about 15 paparazzi eagerly waiting outside. On this occasion though, I had the pleasure of working inside the event, thanks to the wonderful Paul Knowles (PKPR). Big hair and eyelashes, bodies bronzed and most definitely scouse brows retouched, I was surrounded by the most glamorous of Liverpool’s socialites. With a glass of Lambrini in one hand and my canon in the other I began to mingle and greet everyone with a “Hiya Love”. Amanda Harrington and sisters Debbie and Gill O’Toole launched their own fashion website (www. scouseboutique.com) with a launch party at Liverpool Ones Palm Sugar packed with entertainment and a fabulous fashion show. www.palmsugarlounge.co.uk

Welcome to Fabulous, Saturday Night @ Monique’s Monique’s is becoming one of Liverpool’s most exclusive and talked about venues and I am very lucky to be a part of it each and every Saturday night. With two floors, two DJ’s and such a fabulous atmosphere you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Were you there? Have you made our pages this edition??? www.moniquesliverpool.com

Next edition I catch up with the infamous Bedlam dj “Mr X” ...... Who is he??? Also i take a look at the new cocktail bar on Victoria Street “Mojito”. If you would like me to come along to one of your events/nights and take some pictures email info@ afterhoursmag.com
