AGE OF THE AUROCHS by Stephen Guy

The great beasts were the ancestors of domestic cattle which are so much a part of the countryside. Wild auroch roamed Europe, Asia and North Africa.Early man hunted large animals for food, exterminating huge mammoths thousands of years ago. Other large game, including the elephant bird in Madagascar and the moa in New Zealand, survived until relatively modern times. In ancient times aurochs and other large beasts inhabited Merseyside. Bears and wolves competed for food. Wild boar snuffled for acorns in woodland that would later become royal hunting forests. Many animals would be exterminated by man as the nat-

ural landscape was tamed for agriculture. Growing populations needed crops and prehistoric forests were cleared by fire and axe. Early man lived in caves, following a nomadic lifestyle. They tracked and hunted the wandering herds that provided food. Gradually people began to settle and build homes, starting communities which became hamlets, then villages and eventually towns and villages. Aurochs were well built, more than six foot tall with massive horns. They looked different from their descendents, modern cattle. Aurochs had long, slender legs and their heads were larger and more elongated than today’s breeds. We know what they looked like from skele-

tons, hair samples and contemporary descriptions from the last days of the aurochs in the 16th and 17th centuries. Although they were among the earliest creatures to be domesticated, dwindling numbers of wild aurochs survived in remote places. The last recorded specimens died in the Jaktorów Forest, Poland, in 1627. However, their descendants survive throughout much of the world. Domestication over

countless centuries led to the wide variety of cattle we know today. In Britain and other societies cattle have entered folklore. When we visit the countryside, they are a comforting part of the rural scene. An Edwardian postcard (pictured) shows cattle drinking at The Cisterns (also known as Jackson’s Pond) which once stood down the hill from Childwall Church. At this time cattle were also a common sight in Liverpool.

Animals were housed indoors in built-up areas - they rarely came out. They were kept for their milk which would be loaded into metal churns and trundled around the streets in carts. Families would take jugs out to the milkman, who would ladle out the milk. • Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, PierHead, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

Well, it’s June already! It is hard to believe that we both left the Liverpool Echo 8 years and 3 months ago and we were talking just the other day about how much we love owning and running The LINK. We have never regretted leaving our jobs at the Echo for one moment, although it has been and still is very hard work. We get to meet so many lovely people, advertisers and readers alike and enjoy every minute of it. We said last month that we would be making some exciting changes and additions to The LINK and this month we are delighted to introduce our new

And many thanks to those of you who sent What’s On inserts and small articles - as always we have done our very best to fit them in - please keep ‘em coming! The gloomy classroom had desks standing in rigid rows on bare boards facing a wall-mounted blackboard. Miss Bates stood stiffly scrutinising the 36 pupils, her scowling face without any signs of tolerance, support or understanding. The boys and girls were copying the copperplate handwriting on the blackboard. Writing was a key part of the curriculum – if the children had a neat, eligible hand it made them more employable when they left school at 12 or 13. “Put your pens down!” barked Miss

She moved slowly between the desks inspecting each exercise book carefully, her boots clomping on the bare boards. “Very good Hopkins,” she told a ginger-haired boy with freckles. “At least I can read it.” In the next row was a desk occupied by Emily Hartburn. “What is this!” exclaimed Miss Bates. “Your writing is all over the place – it looks like slime!” Emily was ordered to stay behind after school and write out 200 times “I must not write like unspeakable slime.” Emily was able to go home after Miss Bates finally con-

Some weeks earlier, she had been kept awake by next door’s hideous barking dog. Emily was angry, very angry indeed – she almost visibly smouldered. A day or two later the annoying dog jumped over the wall and was scampering up and down the street. “It’s looking for someone to bite,” thought Emily, eyes narrowing. A tram approached, clattering along the tracks. Emily screwed up her eyes and imagined the dog running towards the tram. Sure enough, when she looked again the dog was bounding towards the vehicle. There was a pathetic yelp as it was crushed beneath the wheels. Then there was the incident with the cakes. Her elder sister was always being complimented on her delicious confections. Emily imagined the oven getting hotter and hotter. Sure enough, the cakes were burnt to a crisp. Emily looked Slime up in the dictionary. There

were several definitions – her favourite was: “A mucous substance produced by various organisms such as fish, slugs and fungi”. Her waking and sleeping thoughts were dominated by slime – slime creeping, slime smothering, slime oozing. The newspapers all carried reports about what happened to Miss Bates. She had gone into the park caves for some reason, although it was known that she was interested in fossils. A passer-by saw her legs sticking out from beneath a huge mass of slimy earth that had cascaded into the cave. There was nothing anyone could do. Experts from the

5

university said that a mass of clay had broken through, probably because

of a mild earth tremor. Emily knew better.

When I started doing weight training nearly 30 years ago, working around 4 sets to build muscle was always the norm. Going into my mid 30’s and early 40’s, I started to learn that doing 4 sets of maybe 4 exercises on a body part was too much. When you are younger, you can do 4 sets on each exercise, doing 4 exercises per body part. Your

Over the past 6 years, I’ve had personal training with Dorian Yates, 6 times Mr Olympia, and also done a couple of courses and a lot of reading. What I’ve found is that ‘One Working Set’ is enough. Your body can’t go ‘all out attack’ for a long period. That’s why we only have the ‘100m sprint’ and not a ‘1000m sprint’. One all out attack set should be enough to tire muscle fibres and create growth. Also, you are not over training the area by doing this. If you want to do a lot of sets and not go overboard, then ‘Drop Sets’ are a great tool to add into your workouts. If you are working around 12 repetitions, then maybe increase the weight, do 4 repetitions, drop the weight a tiny bit, and then do an extra 2/3 reps. If you want to build muscle, then you must stay around the 6-

10 rep range. You can’t do 12 reps, drop the weight, and then do another 12 reps. By doing this, you will over train the area and not create growth. If you want to build muscle, then do one warm up set, then a middle set, and then your ‘working set’, using a drop set in each set. By doing this, you have done 6 sets, and haven’t gone overboard. A 90 second rest period between each set is sufficient, decreasing your time in the gym and allowing you more time outside of it to recover Boxercise Fatloss Program If you are interested in registering for my Boxercise fatloss Program, starting the beginning of June, then you must contact me now to reserve your place. There are only 5 places available each month. I will take your weight, body fat % and measurements at the start of the program and then every 4 weeks. HAIR OF THE DOG Dog Grooming Salon NOW OPEN

FRIDAY 23RD MAY TO SUNDAY 1ST JUNE

by Jan Sear 'The Brunswick Lock, Liverpool' (2013) - oil on canvas

Following on from my successful Liverpool exhibition of 2013 entitled ‘Beyond the Brunswick Lock’, there will be a further exhibition of my work in May/ June 2014 largely devoted to art work relating to the docks and locks of Merseyside, with a small amount of material concern-

ing Lark Lane and also the human form. I am a sixty-eight year old artist mostly working in oils and acrylics, who is drawn to the subject-matter through being a keen yachtswoman of some twenty-five years’standing but who is interested in the historical, post-industrial heritage of the area that I love. I feel the need to make a visual record

111 of both the Liverpool and the Birkenhead docks before they disappear from our landscape: again, architecturally the power and lines of these structures reflects a past of confidence and optimism: and the tones of the brickwork, of the buildings surrounding the docks and the starkness of the cranes set against the skyline engender awe and inspiration.

As he is still young, he can get very over excited and likes to jump up, however a simple reward based training method would solve this, with help from Dogs Trust Behaviourists. Turnip is looking for new owners who will continue his training. He gets along with other dogs, and could live with children over the age of 12 who don’t

WOOLTON DRAMA GROUP - LADY WINDERMERE’S FAN Woolton Drama Group’s May 2014 production will be the Oscar Wilde classic Lady Windermere’s Fan. This witty comedy of manners centres on the character of Lady Windermere, who believes her husband is cheating on her with the attractive and mysterious Mrs Erlyne. Is there more to this woman than would first appear? A scathing satire of Victorian morals, the play explores common Wildean themes such as marriage and sexual hypocrisy. Director Darrell Turner comments: ‘What is so in-

teresting about reading and directing this show is how the play covers many complicated themes such as hypocrisy, sacrifice and ideals all within a 24 hour period. Each of the characters brings something new to the story, ranging from the outrageous and entertaining Duchess of Berwick to the suppressed, one lined, Lady Agatha. Wilde helps us to understand that our ideals are not always what they seem and that our past does not have to scar our future, whilst he uses wit and humour to explore these serious issues. Lady Windermere’s Fan brings us back to a flawed society in which gossip and rumours are powerful...and dangerous.’

Thurs 29th - Sat 31st May 2014 (7.30pm) St. Mary’s Church Hall, Aigburth Road, Liverpool, L19 0NE. The Friends of Reynolds Park are aiming to increase the numbers and diversity of plants in the park’s wildflower meadow. We had a planting day on May 16th- a beautiful spring day! Children from St Julies and Bishop Martin schools grew plants from seed and came to plant, them with the assistance of 20 volunteers from KPMG, international auditors, who prepared the ground. In total, over 1600 plants were introduced to the meadow. The Friends acknowledge the practical and financial assistance of KPMG and the financial assistance of the Woolton Educational and Recreational Charity.

Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa

Ditch the dentures to fix your smile WOULDN’Tit be fantastic to neverhave to worry about a denture moving orslipping ever again? Having the confidence to choose anything off the menu and

being able to laugh, sing and speak in public without that subconscious fear that your denture will let you down at the worst possible moment? Dr Marius McGovern, clinical director at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa, is passionate about ending denture suffering by using implants to provide same-day teeth. He said: “Having missing teeth can have a social and functional impact, but here at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa we aim to address this for our patients by providing same day fixed teeth. “Many people are now aware that dental implants can replace single missing teeth in a highly successful, attractive and long lasting way. However, the advancement in dental implant techniques allows replacement of all missing teeth and full dentures with All-on-4 in a single day!” The All-on-4 system is similar to many other dental implant systems; the main difference is that only four implants are re-

quired, cutting down the amount of surgery needed to fit them and the number of screws to hold the teeth in place. The All-on-4 system provides a secure base for a full arch of lower or upper teeth.

Open Day 26th and 27th June

PASSION:Dr Marius McGovern, clinical director at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa

Dr McGovern continued: “With dental implants the roots of your missing teeth are replaced with the highly specialised titanium cylinder which actually integrates with

your bone and becomes a part of you! “The pressure of biting on food is transferred through the implant into your jaw just like with y o u r o w n teeth.Multiple implants are placed to distribute the biting force and allow almost natural function. “At Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa our highly experienced team of dental surgeons are delighted to offer you a comprehensive consultation to discuss your dental issues and develop a customised treatment plan just for you. “The team are so excited about this rapidly evolving field of advanced

dentistry and see dental implants as a way to change people ’s lives for the better!” • For more details call 0151 236 8280, visit www.liverpool implants.co.uk or drop into Liverpool Implant & Aesthetic Dental Spa at Brunswick Street, Liverpool, L2 0PJ.

DISAPPOINTING SEASON FOR THE CROFT FINALLY DRAWS TO A CLOSE by Mick Titherington continued from page 36 a chaotic fixture programme, the club could be justified in believing the gods had conspired against them. Nonetheless the failure to convert chances and some basic defensive errors can’t be ignored when the club’s officials review the team’s performance over the season. Fortunately, due to the demise of other clubs they are assured of Premier League status next season. There are, however, a number of positives that can be taken from the campaign not least the number of games that could have quite easily gone the other way where points could have been gained rather than dropped. Liam Currie, Eddie Baker and Paul Finnigan are players of outstanding ability and Danny Raggett, Dean Boakes, Michael Henney and Kevin Kirkpatrick, all of who became available late in the season, are players who brought class and experience to the side. Joseph Mogale, another late addition to

the squad, and youngster Callum Walker are great prospects and have the potential to influence the direction of the club in the future. Added to these, Adam Boakes, Bruce Crumbleholm, Gary Allen, Simon Baker and Brian Porter turned in consistently high performances, Andy Wright played his way into the representative side and earned himself good reports. And If Sam K e r s h a w, M i k e Kinney and Jon Bowers can regain their fitness and Jack Kelshaw and Matty Adamson are available more often, there is a case for optimism. It is invariably the case that no sooner does one season close then attention switches to the next and manager Ross Kirkpatrick will now sit down with the committee and see if the basis of the squad can be retained and where improvements can be made. Most of the players will be involved in the World Cup (watching on TV that is!) and once that is over then preparations will begin for 2014-15.

ALDER FC Season Round Up by Peter Harrison

A season of transformation came to an end in mid-May with some mixed results. The first team completed their league fixtures with a good 1-0 victory against Manweb, with regular marksman Timmy Naylor netting the winner. However they suffered a heavy defeat to a strong Waterloo Dock team in the quarter finals of the George Mahon Cup. The club is currently securing new manage-

ment for the first team and is looking to improve on its midtable position next term. The second team also finished mid-table but already are introducing new faces in some end of season friendlies still under the leadership of Mark Maddie and Gracey. The Veterans finished the second half of the season much stronger than the first and completed their fixtures with an unlucky 3-2 defeat away to

Aintree Villa, with Mark Carney and Mick Russell on the score sheet. The Ladies Sunday football team has seen a transformation in form and were pushing for the league title. The Mens Veteran Sunday football team again won their league in the Cheshire Veterans League under manager Paul Watts, and Tommy Murphy and John Turner have successfully entered another Sunday Veterans team in the Liverpool

County League. The Mens open age team in the Liverpool Business House League have also competed well with a top four finish under Tony. So in conclusion seven teams were fielded on both a Saturday and Sunday, providing sporting facilities for members of all ages. Special thanks to all the managers and the hard work of the committee members Paul Barnes, Norman Maddison and Steve Bush.

ST FRANCIS XAVIER’S UNDER 16 FOOTBALL TEAM WIN NATIONAL CUP by a ‘Travelling SFX Parent’

The English Schools National Cup competition was won by SFX, playing against Whitgift School from Croydon. . A national competition with 700 schools in with a shout, the final was held at the Britannia Stadium, home of Stoke City FC, on 7th May A game of two

2014 WORLD CUP by Ian Wignell

halves and much more. SFX took hold of the first half and were 30 up at half time with goals from Michael Fernehough (2) and Matthew Mottram. The second half witnessed a spirited comeback from Whitgift which saw them draw level and then go 4-3 up with a few minutes to go. A

For every football fan, the World Cup is the pinnacle of football’s elite. Every four years sees the world’s finest players representing their nations in a bid to be crowned football world champions. This year’s tournament takes place in Rio de Janeiro (starting 14 June) and the hosts Brazil are clearly one of the favourites to win - not only as they are on home soil but with Felipe Luiz Scolari back in charge they look a much better team. With key

crucial penalty was then awarded to SFX just before the final whistle and Michael Fernehough equalised from the spot. The extra time contest saw both sides struggling for that winning goal. However, despite great efforts from both sides, the decider remained elusive. The game was to players like full back Daniel Alves, with his pace and power down the flank, and his Barcelona attacking teammate Neymar, they will surely be a force to be reckoned with. B r a z i l ’s S o u t h American counterparts Argentina have also got a strong chance of doing well in the competition. When two of your attacking players just happen to be Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi, it’s enough to frighten the living daylights out of any team. With no European team ever winning a World Cup

be settled on penalties which went SFX’s way winning 4-2. A new competition trophy was awarded to SFX, with Charlie Short (captain) taking the honours. An exhilarating and exhausting experience for the travelling players, supporters and parents! on South American soil, it has to make their chances that little bit better. Current world Champions Spain are another team capable of beating anyone on their day. The Spanish midfield is packed with an abundance of quality. With players such as playmaker maestro Xabi Alonso, Xavi and Andre Iniesta they are surely one to watch, although their age may be a factor in the intense heat of Brazil. Uruguay are another team with a good chance, although not clear favourites. They have a rather strong

World Cup Trophy squad and with Luis Suarez, top scorer in the Premier League this season with an impressive 31 goals, is one the opposition defences will have to keep a close eye on. You can never count out the technically brilliant Germany or Italy, both really hard teams to beat and both wellorganised units of football brilliance. Belgium are a good outside chance, having been unbeaten in their qualifying group, and with a young team with an average age of 24, they should have the stamina to deal with the climate.

The Dutch also have a decent side but sometimes too many egos within the squad. Everyone in our nation will hope England will do well, but we are in a very tough qualifying group. I’m glad Roy Hodgson has chosen to go with a younger group of players who have more energy and balance with players of experience too. But one thing’s for certain - every football fan in the world will be full of eagerness and anticipation when the tournament starts on 14th June!!

Conceding a goal after 30 seconds is never the best way to start a cup final and so it proved for South Liverpool FC in their first appearance in the Liverpool C o u n t y FA Challenge Cup for 13 years. Asecond goal conceded after 20 minutes proved too much to recover from and although leading goalscorer Cameron Dalton got one back just after half-time Garswood United proved to be a tough nut to crack with the final scoreline at 21. As is often the

hat-tricks, to add to his 36 goals in the previous season. The reserves finished just outside the promotion places, losing decisive games in early April to both Rainhill To w n a n d H a l e Reserves, the two promoted clubs, but winning their final five games to finish above early leaders St Helens Reserves. Special mention must go to centre forward Curtis Cummins who bagged 37 goals despite serving a lengthy suspension mid-season. The youth team

case, losing a cup final can prove to be a disincentive in the final league games and although South had a chance to finish second in the We s t C h e s h i r e League 1st Division, behind runaway leaders Maghull, three defeats in the last four games saw them finish in fourth place. Although this was a highly creditable position in their first season at such a level, it was a disappointing end to the season. Special mention must go to centre forward Cameron Dalton who scored 37 goals, including 4

0151 427 7909 went desperately close to winning the We s t C h e s h i r e League Youth Plate in the final against champions Bootle. Taking a secondhalf lead from a Jamie Clair goal after Steve Timson had scored a magnificent equaliser in the first

half, South looked to be taking hold of the trophy but Bootle equalised from a controversially awarded penalty with minutes remaining and then won the penalty shoot-out after extra time had failed to seperate the two teams.

REMYCA netted the winner in the 87th minute and in many ways this was symptomatic of the club’s season as it was the fifth time they had conceded in the last ten minutes of a game to drop points.
