FIRST OF MANY by Stephen Guy

Officials compiling the Doomsday Book throughout England in 1087 found little to record on the windswept banks of the River Mersey. A few miles inland they documented such communities as Childwall, Walton and West Derby.

Just 21 years earlier William of Normandy had successfully invaded England, destroying King Harold and his army in the Battle of Hastings. The conqueror set about removing the defeated Saxons and replacing them with cronies and supporters who had helped his campaign.

In those days little disturbed the peace and quiet on the estuary. There was no Liverpool – just a manor farm called Esmedune held by a man called Edelmund. The Doomsday officials recorded that the farm was worth 32 pence and extended up to 180 acres. The poor quality land was tilled by a plough drawn by eight oxen. Smithdown Lane (pictured) led to the farm and is a later corruption of the name Esmedune, as is evident when you say the name. The lane is therefore probably the most ancient road in Liverpool –older even than the town’s original seven streets that clustered around the much-later castle. This was an age when there was no standard spelling of place names – that only happened when the Ordnance Survey maps were drawn up in the 19th century. Officials wrote down names in the way local people pronounced them. By 1221 the manor was interpreted as Shinthedun in a writ of inquiry. Some 75 years later the name has become Smitheden. Centuries passed and in the reign of Charles I it is recorded as Smithdon, from which the modern name derives. Smithdown Road was created at a much later date, developed in Victorian and Edwardian times as Liverpool expanded. Rows of shops

and businesses are still a big attraction. The cemetery contains many fascinating memorials and is well worth a visit. One stone that interests me records a lady with the lovely name True Guy, although she was not a relation. Further down stood Sefton General Hospital. As a small child I recall mother taking me to visit granddad, who was recover-

ing from an operation. However, matron would not allow me to see him (he was a mass of tubes) and I remember having to wait alone in a desolate corridor. • Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 10th MARCH

It’s tempting to believe that Mother’s Day was the invention of greetings card manufacturers or florists but, like so many other customs, it can be traced to the ancient Greeks, who held an annual Spring festival to Rhea, the mother of the gods. The Romans copied the idea with offerings to Cybele, who was

Mother’s Day continues to flourish around the globe, albeit on different dates. Here in Britain we keep to the Spring time tradition, with florists and card shops doing a roaring trade and restaurants full as families show their appreciation for that person we all take for granted the rest of the year - good old mum!

An American woman, Anna Jarvis, campaigned for a special day to honour mothers in memory of her own mother’s good works in the community. Presidents Taft and Roosevelt supported Anna’s campaign and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that May 2nd was a national holiday - “Mother’s Day”. Sadly, the growing commercialisation of Mother’s Day was deeply distressing to Anna, who admitted before her death in 1948 that she regretted starting the tradition.

also a mother of deities. Early Christians embraced the idea by dedicating the fourth Sunday in Lent to Mary the mother of Christ and, as time went by, the English extended the idea to include all mothers in what became known as “Mothering Sunday”. From the early 16th century, families celebrated with servants being allowed home to visit their mothers, and even a special cake baked to mark the day.

DANCE OF FEAR by Anton Valdemart

He was nervous as he walked through the starlit park, his feet crunching on

the cinder-covered sidewalk under flickering gas lamps. Although it was 1966, Eric always felt that he was returning

to the Victorian era when he entered the gloomy byways. The house was certainly not Victorian. The flat-roofed bungalow had walls decorated with strange abstract designs more suited to the John Moores Exhibition. Eric paused at the gate and put on his

mask. Should he continue? The invitation had come through the sixth-form – friends of friends who had the house to themselves for the evening. The strains of W i n c h e s t e r Cathedral came cascading out of the unusual dwelling. He could not understand why he’d never noticed the house before while walking in Sandfield Park. Young people filled the rooms, some attempting conversation and others in quiet reverie. All were wearing masks ranging from the grotesque to the stylish. Eric felt slightly under-dressed in his plain, Lone Rangertype creation. He scanned the gathering trying to recognise people beneath their disguises. Was that Murph from 6L? Could that be Mabel from 6U? He could not tell from their voices because the music was so loud. The girls wore miniskirts, the boys colourful hipster trousers. All were deathly pale in the subdued light.

He first became aware of her through the corner of his eye. She was looking at him intently, her face dominated by a simple black cat mask. He realised they were the only two wearing black masks.

sending his head spinning. “Come this Friday. We will wear the masks,” she told Eric as he joined those drifting away into the sultry night. Friday came and his heart thumped in anticipation. Again he paused at the gate, carefully putting on his mask. He walked awkwardly up the long drive. Female voices seemed to be whispering in the shrubbery. Bats wheeled overhead and an owl screeched. This time the house was silent apart from the muffled purr of Set Me Free. Eric rang the bell. The door seemed to open by itself. Then she was upon

They sat together in the garden enjoying the warm summer air. This was her home, she told him, her green eyes staring intently from behind the mask. They danced to the intoxicating slow drone of Set Me Free played over and over again on the radiogram. At midnight they kissed long and deep, the softness and sweetness of her lips

him like a wildcat. At first he thought it was a game until he saw her snarling mouth beneath the mask and felt her nails digging into his neck. There was no soft kiss just a crazy dance with painful biting. He struggled free, disorientated and afraid. He fled away through the shrubbery, flinging his mask aside. Next day he returned but could find no trace of the house, only his bedraggled mask hanging limply from a bush. • Read my next Strange Tale - The Best Medicine in the April Link.

Greg started his cadet career in October 2006 at the age of 14 and quickly passed his First Class Cadet training, progressing to complete both his Leading and Senior Cadet training within 18 months and his Staff Cadet Classification, now called Cadet Method of Instruction, less than 8 months later. Alongside this he also progressed through the ranks, achieving Corporal a year after joining and Sergeant 6

months after that; it was a further year before Greg was promoted to Flight Sergeant and finally Cadet Warrant Officer. During this time he took part in the vast amount of activities and courses the Air Cadets had to offer, some of which included, working his way through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, becoming a Flight Staff Cadet at 10 Air Experience Flight at RAF Woodvale and representing the squadron at not just Wing and Region competitions but also Corps and National levels for Banner Drill and First Aid respectively. Greg moved to 1982 (Huyton) Squadron in December 2011, three weeks before

KEEP FIT WITH PAUL COSHOTT Paul can be contacted as follows: www.liverpoolpersonaltrainer.com 07887 868872 Twitter @PaulCoshott

Paul Coshott has been running his Personal Training Business in Liverpool for almost 17 years. He is also an NLP Therapist and Life Coach and teaches Ju Jitsu and Boxercise. Here, he has put together a short circuit workout that you can do at home, which will help tone all the major muscle groups and burn calories. (i) Warm Up Skipping. People often ask me, if they were to buy a piece of equipment, what should they buy. I always respond by saying a skipping rope you’ll be able to get one from the high street for about £3/£4. Start off by taking the rope over your head 20 times. Your heart will rocket at the start. When you feel comfortable, try swinging the rope over your head 30 times and build up until you can skip non-stop for 3 minutes. You can do this outside, or if you don’t feel comfortable, skip indoors without the rope. (ii) Circuit Training. Here, we are going to follow a circuit that will work all the major muscle groups. Try for 30 seconds on each exercise. When you have built up your fitness, try one minute on each exercise. • Squats. Make sure

your feet are shoulder width apart and your feet straight. Keep your knees over your ankles. Breathe in on the way down, breathe out on the way up. • Star Jumps. Keep your heels up off the floor but be aware of your calf muscles tightening up. This will also maintain the warming-up process of the shoulders. • S t o m a c h Crunches. Put your feet flat, knees bent. Tuck the chin into your chest. Keep the shoulders back, hands on the thighs. Reach up to the knees and back. Keep the lower back on the floor. Breathe out on the effort. Putting this exercise in at this point will help bring the heart rate down after star jumps. • Press-ups. Keep the knees on the floor, unless you’re comfortable doing a full press up. Hands wide and chest in line with the hands. Breathe in on the way down, out on the way up. • Lunges. Begin by doing one leg at a time i.e. 30 seconds on left leg, then 30 seconds on right leg. When you are feeling fitter and stronger, try doing alternate lunges. If you have an issue with your knees, use a chair for support. The

leg that is doing the lunge, make sure you push through the heel on the way back. This will take the pressure through the glutes, which is where you want it, rather than the knees. • Jogging on the spot. A very underestimated exercise. Try and keep the

knees high. This will take your heart rate back up again. If you feel uncomfortable with jogging, then take it to a march on the spot. • Lateral Jumps. Maybe use a rolled up towel or a small object. Stand at the side of it. Bend the knees and jump over the object,

sideways and then jump back. Make sure you bend your knees so you are slightly working your thighs. If you are working to 30 seconds, maybe aim for about 12 reps. If you are working to 1 minute, maybe aim for about 20 reps. Your heart rate will go up again during this exercise.

• Squats. Again working the thighs and the glutes, this exercise will also gently bring down your heart rate. • S t o m a c h C r u n c h e s . Working the stomach and core. Keep the feet flat, knees bent, chin tucked into the chest, shoulders back. Reach up to your

knees. Breathe out on the effort. This will also help your heart rate come down again. • Star Jumps. Last exercise for the circuit. Keep the heels up and take the arms no higher than shoulder height. This will take your heart rate back up again and prepare you for

some shadow boxing. Paul teaches Boxercise on a Monday evening at 6.15pm and Wednesday evening at 8pm, at St Marys Church Hall, St Marys Road, Cressington, L19 0NE. He also teaches kids and adult Ju Jitsu on Monday and W e d n e s d a y evenings.

ALDER FC - FIRST TEAM PROMISE by Peter Harrison The weather continues to wreak havoc with the fixture programme, with a mixture of snow and rain leading to postponements. The first team have managed to consolidate their position with a push for promotion on the cards following two back-to-back wins against Old Holts. A 6-0 victory was followed by a 5-0 victory with regular marksman Paul O’Hare bagging four goals and Mick Hutton and Joe Reynolds chipping in. The second team, despite Lee Sambor netting regularly, are finding life tough in the second division

of the Liverpool Premier League and have suffered two heavy defeats to Warbreck Reserves. The third team resumed their fixture list with a clash against top of the table Essemay and, despite an Aaron Fitzsimmons goal, lost 4-1. The Veterans also returned to action in their divisional cup but suffered a disappointing defeat 2-0 away to Winchester, conceding the first goal within the first 30 seconds. Special thanks this month must go to Kev and the Fijtusu boys for all their help and work on the grounds which has enabled the games to be played during this inclement weather

STONEYCROFT 3 LIVERPOOL NORTH 4 continued from page 28 close with two other efforts. Hartley on the other hand continued to pose a threat. Just as the ‘Croft were beginning to despair of ever finding the net Kinney popped up to slot home from close range to level the score on 38 minutes. Shortly after the restart the visitors found themselves ahead once again. Indecisive defending enabled the North forwards to get behind the Croft back four and a neat back heel by a North forward put the ball into the path of an unmarked colleague who put it into the empty net. Croft’s misery was compounded when Donohue collected a ball from Currie which the ref ruled as a back pass and the resultant free kick was converted. Debutant John Murphy, who had been introduced to replace the injured Kev Moss, added another dimension to the Croft attack and when he was brought down in the area Mike Kinney doubled his account

from the spot. The Croft were now driving forward and there was an air of inevitability about the equaliser when it came, with Carruthers poking the ball home after a goalmouth scramble. Most observers now felt that the Croft would go on to win but were left aghast when three Liverpool North attackers were left unmarked for one of them to calmly head in at the far post from a corner with minutes to go. The drama had not finished, however, and the Croft camp were furious in the closing seconds when what looked like a push in the back in the North area was not penalised and in the hail of protests that followed Carruthers was sent off for dissent. STONEYCROFT: Donohue, Williams, Currie, Finnegan, Moss; Kinney, Carruthers, Flanagan, Foy; McGann, Peers: Subs: Murphy, E. Baker, S.Baker, Beckett, Dowd.

CROFT GO DOWN FIGHTING IN EVENLY FOUGHT CUP TIE by Mick Titherington APH 2

STONEYCROFT 1

With the sun shining on beautiful winter’s day this much postponed I Zingari Cup tie finally got underway. The game devel-

oped into hard fought encounter with both sides missing goalscoring opportunities. Stoneycroft started the brighter and impressed with some slick passing and movement. One partic-

ular move involved five or six players switching the ball from one flank to the other ending in the ball being pulled wide by Peers after it had been turned back from the goal line. Murphy, on the left flank and in his first full start for the club, was a constant thorn in the APH side. Because of the failure to take chances the teams went in level at half-time. The restart saw Eddie Baker on for Flanagan who had

sustained an injury in the first half. Not long into the half two minutes of defensive madness struck the Croft again in almost a carbon copy of the previous week when direct from a corner the APH forward found himself completely unmarked and gratefully nodded his side in front. Less than two minutes later poor marking from a cross saw APH double their lead with an easy header at the far post. The visitors fought

back heroically and were doing all they could to get back in the game but APH were looking solid. Almost out of the blue the Croft skipper, Finnegan, forced the ball home after a scramble following a corner making for an exciting climax. Croft threw the kitchen sink at the home defence but could not get an equaliser. McGann blasted a late free-kick over the bar the tie was lost and the Croft’s

exit from this cup was sealed. By a twist of fate the two teams will meet again in the next round of the George Mahon Cup and Stoneycroft will be hoping for better fortune then. S T O N E Y C R O F T: Donohue, Williams, Currie, Finnegan, Foy; Kinney, Carruthers, Flanagan, Murphy; Peers, McGann. Subs: E. Baker, S. Baker, Beckett, Moss, Dowd.

SOUTH REMAIN FAVOURITES FOR PROMOTION by Jim Stanway

South Liverpool FC’s interest in cup competitions ended with an extra-time defeat to local rivals Old Xaverians. Down to 10 men on the hour mark, and with the score at 0-0 after 90 minutes, South simply ran out of steam once the Xavs had scored

on the stroke of half-time of extra time. However, promotion to the first division of the West Cheshire League remains on track after a narrow 1-0 win over West Kirby Reserves, with a Kevin Martin goal, kept a healthy lead at the top. All their main rivals have been dropping points

on a regular basis although South have many games to play due to the appalling weather that we have experienced this winter. The reserves suffered disappointment in the semi-final of the LCFA Junior Cup with a 4-2 reverse to higher-ranked Richmond Raith Rovers. Goals from Francis Evans and

Mitchell McNally were not quite enough although a superb performance from substitute Sharif Yusuf, the youth team’s leading goalscorer, took the eye. The youth team are in the middle of their supplementary competition, the West Cheshire & Halton League Competition, and

have registered two big wins against Halton League opposition. Four goals for Mike Tomlinson and one each for Sharif Yusuf and Brad Marland saw off Beechwood by 6-4 while two goals for Sharif Yusuf and one each for Lewis Fay, Callum Brown and Anthony Marlow saw off Halton All Stars by 5-2.

STONEYCROFT 3 LIVERPOOL NORTH 4

Unfortunately for Stoneycroft their defensive errors were punished by a gleeful Liverpool North forward line who could hardly believe their luck. The scoring commenced within 7 minutes of the kick off. Although they started brightly enough a loose ball from the Stoneycroft defence was seized on by the Liverpool North midfield and they were allowed to slot the ball through and set free the

excellent Hartley who lobbed the ball expertly over the advancing Donohue to put his side ahead. The deficit prompted a lively response from the

home side with wing back Williams showing his pace in frequent maraudings down the right flank and the Stoneycroft bench were incensed when the referee

failed to award a penalty when Williams was seemingly upended. The game then developed into an end to end tussle with both sides creating

chances but failing to convert. McGann was denied by an excellent save by the Liverpool North keeper and went continued on page 27
