MOTORISTS travelling abroad for their summer holidays are being warned of varying European rules and regulations that could land them with hefty fines. Despite being members of the European Union, different countries have different laws and some of them have only just been introduced. Anyone driving through France who fails to carry a fluorescent safety vest in their vehicle could get a £100 fine following a new law that came in to force on July 1. According to an online survey by Car Parts Direct, three quarters of British motorists who intend to travel through France this summer had no knowledge of the law. Fines also apply for not having a GB sticker, warning triangle or headlamp deflectors. A travel kit that includes a warning triangle, spare bulb and fuse kit, yellow jacket, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, headlamp deflector kit, tyre fix aerosol and a GB sticker is available from www.carparts-direct. co.uk at a cost of £69.

GENERAL Motors says it will improve its finances through 2009 by laying off salaried workers, making more cuts in lorry production, suspending its dividend and borrowing at least $2bn as it suffers its worst US sales in a decade. These moves, combined with several other initiatives, are expected to improve GM's cash position by $15bn by the end of 2009. Chief executive Rick Wagoner, says: "We are responding aggressively to the challenges of today's American market. "We remain committed to bringing to market great products that target changing consumer preferences for more fuel-efficient vehicles."

OFF ROAD: The Audi Q5 is expected to spearhead a record breaking year for the motor manufacturer

F THE stories are to be believed that the motoring industry is in meltdown then somebody better have a quiet word with Audi.
Recession, credit crunch and economic downturn are clearly not words being banded about in the German giant’s boardroom. While it is fair to say that some motoring marques are experiencing tough trading times, it is proving the complete opposite for Audi. Life has never been so good for the premium luxury brand as it remains on track to sell more than 1m cars globally this year alone. And more than a tenth of these will be found on British roads as Audi expects to post another record-busting year. Just when you thought that it couldn’t get any rosier for the leading motor manufacturer well, it does, with the arrival of its best model to date – the Q5. The smaller brother of its hugely popular Q7 will arrive on our shores towards the end of the year although dealers will be taking orders in early September. Audi bosses are being rather cautious over its new compact-sized sports utility vehicle by predicting annual sales of around 8,000 cars. Having driven the Q5 I can comfortably predict that it is going to be a massive seller and will almost certainly double

Just like when the TT coupe first appeared on the scene and there was a queue a mile long of buyers the newcomer will undoubtedly become the must-have motoring fashion accessory. Despite repeated attempts and interference from the government and the green brigade there has been no let-up in the SUV sector. And that’s sweet music to the ears of Audi who were uncannily late into this burgeoning segment. Buoyed by the reaction and success of the seven-seater
Q7 the brand recognized the need for a smaller version. Visually the Q5 shares much of its good looks from its big brother which, let’s face it, is no bad thing. Being one step ahead of the opposition Audi designers insist that they have gone for a subtle and understated look. Virtually every car produced will be to the customers’ requirements, a sort of bespoke ordering service if you like. Certainly it is one outfit that you will never tire of wearing as it looks and acts the business. The interior is typically
Audi and fashioned to a high standard throughout. The dashboard is nicely laid-out with all the switches and controls within easy sweep of the driver and there’s more than enough space for five adults to stretch out. At the rear there is also a decent-sized boot that will swallow up a decent number of suitcases and bags. And if you want to extend its trunk the rear seats fold flat to add to the Q5’s versatility and offer up 1,560 litres of space. On the road the new Audi handles like a dream, combining sporty handling and lethal performance. Boasting one of the longest in-class wheelbases as well as permanent Quattro all-wheel drive the Q5 grips the surface beautifully and never wanders. The car will initially be offered with one petrol and two diesel engines. A new 2.0-litre TFSI delivers 211PS and offers up decent pace throughout, taking just over seven seconds to go from rest to 62mph yet can still achieve nearly 39 miles to the gallon. But the 2.0-litre common rail TDi diesel is expected to be the biggest seller with its fuel efficiency figure approaching 49 miles to the gallon and low CO2 emissions of 175g/km. The other oil-burner is the recently updated 3.0-litre which is faster but not as economical or as environmentally friendly. Prices have still to be confirmed but are expected to start around £30,000.
NICE way to go green ZERO TAX: The emissionfree NICE
THE future of motoring has been revealed and it is very NICE. That is the name of the new all-electric car from China. It arrives at a time when alternative fuels for cars are top of the agenda and this affordable newcomer is perfectly positioned to cash in. The British-based NICE Car Company commissioned the
car to be designed in Europe and built in China and it is making its world debut at the British Motor Show in London. Costing £14,000, it is being billed as the first affordable all-electric family model that can be used on a daily basis. With a range of up to 65 miles and performance of up to 55mph, it will be an ideal commuting car exempt from any
current forms of taxation. As the UK has the highest CO2-based charges in the world it will come here first this autumn and will be rolled out to the rest of Europe during 2009, taking the name of Ze-O. NICE Car Company founder Julian Wilford, says: "People want practical electric cars and they want them sooner rather than later.”
