Bring a subtle splash o PaulBakergetsout hiscolouringbookto injectsomestyleinto yourhome

W

HEN it comes to the latest interior design trends, many of them revolve, inevitably,

around colour. With the seasons come changes in the sorts of colours with which we decorate our homes. This year we’ve already seen bright summer hues and bold colourblocking taking over our lounges and bedrooms but, as summer moves towards autumn, we say hello to the idea of the colour splash. Just as with those blocks of vivid colour, the colour splash trend sees a cross-over with the fashion world as catwalk designers take whites, creams and greys and throw vibrant shades at them to catch the eye. Using a similar idea within the home will allow you to create some wonderful interiors, with this look The green of this leopard print wallpaper promising to work throughout the really catches the eye and works with the rooms of the house. WHITER SHADE OF PALE Choose a subtle base colour to use as your canvas, something that bolder colours will mix with easily, and then paint or wallpaper in one of these lighter shades. Look at light greys or opt for a classic white, it never goes out of style. Cream, mushroom or perhaps a light champagne or ivory would also work. Then add your colour in a splash. That isn’t to say, apply liberally with just one colour, but to use the lighter background colour to show up the eye-catching spots of colour that you arrange about the room. Your imagination is the key when applying these pools of colour. Rugs and curtains in striking reds, lush orange and sultry purples will draw the attention from the plainer walls. How about a colourful canvas adorning the walls, bringing attention not only to the artwork itself but also to the fresh modern gleam of the white walls themselves? Glass vases in azure blue and jade green conjure up a sense of the exotic and draw the eye around the room, from shelves, to tables, to window sills. TONE IT DOWN While previous colour looks clamoured for clashes and eye- popping blocks, this look advises you to tone down in general and make dramatic use of the colour you do allow.

colour splash theme. From Digitex

This cream corner sofa offers the perfect backdrop. From Sofa and Home So, how about colour matching chairs or sofas with the walls you have used as the canvas for your room? You can then effectively ‘paint’ your chairs and sofas by choosing colourful or patterned cushions and throws. Wooden furniture and wood flooring works well with the colour splash look, as does leather and chrome too. When choosing the colours to splash don’t be afraid to choose shades from pretty much opposite sides of the colour wheel. You wouldn’t necessarily want to use two bright opposing shades, but combining a vibrant colour with a deeper one will make for a pleasant but surprising combination. Bright corals and deep turquoises can sit comfortably together on

These glass vases work well in translucent shades of green and blue. From Berry Red

walls, in storage spaces and blossoming upon accessories. Being from different ends of the spectrum makes this unexpected combination a surprising match. DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL Don’t forget the finer detail though. Lampshades, fruit bowls and candle holders are great ways to round off this look. And, when the sun goes down, lighting can be used effectively to complement this style. How about using neon or other, more subtle, lighting effects? There’s a certain retro cool to playing with colour and coupling it

with interesting lighting can really help set this look off. While we’re on a retro vibe, consider a lava lamp to quite literally add that splash of light and colour cool to the dusky evenings of late summer and early autumn. This trend is great for people who don’t want those big clashing blocks of bold colour thrown about

their home or, who want to use colour but are not quite sure they can pull off those broad sweeps of vibrant shade. The resulting look is fun, cool, but not intrusive, drawing your eye in gently rather than smashing you about the pupils with bright orange blocks which will make people remember your home for all the wrong reasons. So, if you want to achieve a tasteful look in your home, then make a more subtle splash and colour in your room’s blank canvas just in time for autumn.

Tuscany, from 230,000 euros CASTELFALFI is an 800-yearold village in the heart of the idyllic Italian region of Tuscany. Deserted by inhabitants during the rural exodus of the 1960s, TUI, one of Europe’s leading leisure travel groups, is breathing new life into the area through a series of regeneration projects. Following the acquisition four years ago, plans were put together in consultation with the local authorities and the municipality for the renovation of Castelfalfi’s existing properties and the construction of new apartments, hotels and leisure facilities. Traditional Tuscan construction methods, using the latest environmentallyfriendly technology, are being applied throughout, to ensure that all building is sensitive with the surrounding landscape. The original village properties are set to be completely renovated and sold as apartments by spring 2013. A further 18 former farmhouses scattered throughout the settlement will also be renovated on buyers’ demand and in line with their preferences and tastes. In

Castelfalfi is being completely renovated to provide apartments, villas and hotels addition, 11 exclusive golf villas are being built. Castelfalfi is creating three additional smaller “villaggi”, comprising apartments, townhouses and villas just to the west of the borgo (borough) at the heart of the estate. Regeneration of the borgo will create an important focal

point for residents and the visiting public alike, including 41 apartments, an upgraded 32-room hotel in the old tabaccaia, a pizzeria, bar and carefully chosen retail outlets. Meanwhile, the existing castello (castle) will be completely regenerated with a new restaurant, bar, cookery

school and function rooms. Owners will have privileged access to one of Italy’s most challenging and picturesque 18-hole golf courses; Castelfalfi Golf and Country Club, which is within walking distance from the heart of the town and has been attracting keen golfers since it opened in 2010.

On completion, Castelfalfi will also offer three hotels: the 32-room boutique property close to the borgo, a 120-room hotel with an extensive 3,000 sq m spa area and a 180-room hotel. Meanwhile, La Piscina, the former public swimming pool, is being completely renovated and will reopen to the public
