MC for Laughterhouse Comedy at the Slaughter House and the Slug and Lettuce Where was the family home you grew up in and what was it like? I grew up in Dombey Street off Park Road in Toxteth. It was great, a small terraced house with my brother, sister and my parents. I was there for the first 25 years of my life before I left home. It still had an outside toilet. The toilet was always cold and always full of spiders, I’m still terrified of them and I think that’s why! What is your clearest memory of the house? The outside toilet and the spiders! It was good in summer, no, actually it was never good. Where was the first house you bought yourself and what did it cost? Our first house was a little two up-two down at the end of Park Road, on Kedleston Street which cost us £19,000. It was by the old Gaumont Cinema and the Toxteth chapel, apparently Prince Charles’ favourite building! What made you want to buy it? It was the first home for me and my partner, it was a real ‘do’er upper’. We really enjoyed making it our own, we’ve got good memories of that house. What are the important things you look for when buying a house? Well we had to move because there wasn’t enough space for us and our baby, we needed more room. We’ve moved to another terraced house in St Michael’s. The first time I saw it I didn’t want to move in, but my partner said if we bought the house I could have a games room, for ‘all my rubbish’. We’ve got three floors including the attic now, so I’ve got space for my games and a little bit of solitude. My partner loved it for the big kitchen! Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it to the experts? I am far and away the worst DIY-er in the world. Seriously, I couldn’t put a shelf up. I’ve been cunning though and surrounded myself with people who can. My brother-in-law is a builder and one of my best mates is a decorator so I’m lucky to be able to find people to help. I’m good at breaking things but I’ll pay someone else to do it up again. What is the one thing you love most about your current home? The games room and the space for all of us. My little girl has space to play, space for her dog. It’s also in a dead end so it’s quiet. We live on the same street as my in-laws, they’re useful for when we run out of milk, coffee, toilet roll or need a baby-sitter! They’re also good for when I lock myself out. It’s a blessing and a curse living so close to them, but usually a blessing.

● BEFORE the weekend, stock up at your local DIY store on decking treatment, methylated spirits, fungicidal wash, a stiff broom, protective gloves and goggles, and a good quality wood-stain brush (unless you have these things already). Some decking treatments come with their own applicator, so you don’t need a brush. ● ON Saturday morning, start by brushing off the decking with the broom to get rid of dirt and debris. Use the fungicidal wash to remove any algae and mould, then wash the decking with warm soapy water or a pressure washer. Leave to dry. ● Once it’s dry, wipe over with a cloth dampened in methylated spirits. It’s advisable to wear the gloves and goggles when doing this and when using the fungicidal wash. ● By late morning/early afternoon, you should be ready to start applying the decking treatment. Work in the direction of the grain along the length of each board to avoid overlap marks, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. By late afternoon/early evening, the first coat should be dry (allow about four hours between coats, depending on the product), so you can apply a second coat. ● Unless further coats are required, you should be able to enjoy your decking from Sunday morning onwards – weather permitting. For peat’s sake
As a new peat-free campaign is launched, Hannah Stephenson looks at the importance of switching to peat-free compost and asks how it compares with its peat-based competitors
NLESS you’ve been living in a hole in the ground for the last few years, you’ll know that using peat-based products in your garden is decimating peatlands throughout the UK and beyond. Peatlands provide vital habitats for wildlife, store greenhouse gases and release thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. However, peat is used in compost and soil improvers because it’s light, retains moisture and stores nutrients. It’s also very cheap. In an effort to raise awareness and encourage gardeners to choose peat-free alternatives, leading organic growing charity Garden Organic has launched its ’I Don’t Dig Peat’ campaign, to put an end to the 24 million wheelbarrows of peat which its experts estimate is being used unnecessarily by British gardeners each year. Gardeners’ World presenter Alys Fowler, who is fronting the campaign, says: “Increasingly, those who go peat-free and get hold of good quality compost find there’s no argument. I don’t use any peat-based compost and I see no difference. I grow fantastic vegetables. “If you were trying to grow peat bog plants, there’s an argument that growing them in peat is sensible, but the amount of people growing peat bog plants is tiny. What’s happening is that a lot of people are using peat - up to 70% peat in some multi-purpose composts - for growing, say, tomatoes. But tomatoes don’t need peat to grow.” Fowler uses her council’s green waste compost, called ’Care compost’, sold at her local garden centre, along with peat-free multi-purposes from Carbon Gold, New Horizon and Vital Earth. “If your council is making green waste, phone their refuse department which should be able to tell you where to buy it. It’s incredibly cheap,” she suggests. Historically, peat-free composts have been criticised for being inferior for seed-sowing. A Which? Gardening report from the Consumers’ Association magazine noted earlier this year: “Our trial results show that peat-free composts still have a way to go to match the performance of peat for sowing seeds and growing on young plants – although the picture is rosier for container composts.” However, some peat-based composts are just as inferior as their peat-free counterparts, says Ceri Thomas, editor of Which? Gardening. “Gardeners shouldn’t assume that all compost is the same. Whether peat-free or peat-based, the quality of compost varies massively. “Our trials found that it is possible to buy a good quality peat-free compost that performs as well as the best peat-based compost. But there are also a number of peat-based and peat-free composts that simply don’t match these high standards.” In its latest trial, Which? Gardening recommends New Horizon Organic & Peat Free Growbag for sowing seeds. Germination
LOVE PEAT: Alys Fowler is heading the campaign to help gardeners go peat-free rates for basil were on a par with its ’Best Buy’ peat-based compost and the quality of the resulting seedlings was good. New Horizon Organic & Peat Free multi-purpose compost (£5.99 for 60 litres) was a Best Buy container compost for the second consecutive year, outperforming seven peat-based composts, including three specific container ones, to come joint top. Fowler says: “This campaign is saying, think about it. There’s no need to dig up one part of the world to grow something in your back garden. Start making home compost and buy fewer bedding plants, switching to perennials which grow year after year, meaning you reduce the peat-grown plants you bring into the garden and the need to replant each year. Search online for nurseries or mail order stores selling peat-free plants and support their peat-free initiatives. Grow Your Own runner beans If your runner beans don’t have many flowers on them it may be you’ve applied too much fertiliser and/or water at the wrong time, which will result in plenty of healthy leaves but not many flowers. Cold and windy weather can also stop bees from pollinating the crop. The right time to water beans is when they are flowering and when the pods are swelling. You don’t need to water the young plants profusely until flowering starts, because watering consistently throughout the plant’s life will just fuel stem and leaf growth, but little else. The secret is to plant them in fertile soil that doesn’t dry out easily, preparing the ground beforehand by digging in plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Once they are flowering, plants can be watered twice a week, directing the flow at the base of the plants. New research shows that applying water to the roots in the evening increases cropping and pod set. If your leaves are showing small brown spots surrounded by a yellow ’halo’, the plants may have the disease halo blight, which results in the pods developing water-soaked spots. Prevent the problem by never soaking the seeds before sowing and use a resistant variety such as ’Red Rum’. Pick off infected leaves when you see them, or pull out and bin affected plants.

Greater funds for home buyers
SEDDON Homes has welcomed news that some major mortgage lenders are making more funds available for first time buyers – and cutting their fees. Denis Maddock, sales and marketing director, says the move, along with an increase in the availability of shared equity schemes and the Bank of England’s maintenance of interest rates at historic low levels, was crucial to help bring first time buyers back into the market place. “We are encouraged that some lenders have reduced their application administration fees by 50%, which makes a big difference to first time buyers,” he explains. His comments came as id4living, a Seddon Homes company, prepares to launch a new development of contemporary homes priced at 90% of market value to give first time buyers a much-needed helping hand. Seddon has also introduced a shared equity scheme at some other developments, including Mosaic at Runcorn where three and four bedroom homes start from as low as £115,000. Called Springboard, the scheme allows selected buyers to own the full 100% of a property while paying a mortgage of just 80% of the market price. Of the remainder 15 per cent will be financed by an interest free 10-year loan from Seddon and by a reduced five% contract deposit. The Housebuilders’ Federation has just published figures showing over the last three years new homes developers have invested almost £1bn in shared equity schemes, to help maintain levels of housing construction.
