Avoiding Toxicity and Exposure to Harmful Chemicals By Dr. Liesa Harte, MD It’s time to start your health and wellness program with LIVEO. That means changing your diet and starting an exercise program. However, one aspect of wellness that most people overlook is decreasing exposure to toxic, harmful chemicals. It’s not as simple as avoiding highly polluted areas or steering clear of toxic waste. In fact, chemicals you apply to your skin or put into your body every day can cause inflammation and increase free radicals in your body. This increases the chance of developing chronic health problems. Use these professional tips in conjunction with a health and wellness program to protect your body from toxicity and exposure to harmful chemicals. Choose Food and Drinks Wisely • Select organic fruits and vegetables to avoid consuming lingering pesticides. • Choose organic milk and dairy products to avoid ingesting growth hormones. • Pick wild fish to reduce mercury consumption. Use Healthy Household Products • Choose natural cleaning products. • Avoid using pesticides and herbicides on your property. • Purchase low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) and “green” when it comes to products such as carpet, paint, and furniture. • Install a high-efficiency air filter in the HVAC system to filter debris from the air. Change the filter every three months or based on the manufacturer’s recommendation. Choose Eco-Friendly Personal Hygiene Products • Look for all-natural ingredients in hair-care products, makeup, lotions and soaps. Avoid products with ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, propylene glycol, alcohols, and synthetic fragrances. • Avoid using aerosol sprays. • Avoid deodorant containing aluminum. This may require discontinuing the use of antiperspirants, since nearly all contain aluminum. Drink Plenty of Water

Consume only bottled or filtered water. However, avoid water bottled in soft plastic because the plastic can leach into the water. Drink six to eight glasses of water per day. Carry water with you wherever you go. Choose a metal or glass water bottle.
Limit the Use of Plastics • Avoid using plastic containers and bottles with the numbers 3, 6 and 7 printed on the bottom, since these are most likely to leach into your food or water. • Do not microwave plastic containers, and minimize dishwashing plastics at high heat. • Minimize the use of plastic wrap.
