SYRREN 2012: 2nd business convention for actors handling the refit, repair/maintenance of yachts and Super Yachts in the Mediterranean at Marseilles Organised by Riviera Yachting NETWORK and Pôle Mer PACA (Sea Innovation and Business Cluster), this second convention of the Super Yacht Repair & REfit Network is a business conference open to the refit, repair/maintenance sector of the Yacht industry (i.e. yachts more than 24m in length with a professional team on board) and will take place at Parc Chanot, Marseilles. SYRREN 2011 was a great success for yachting professionals. - 10 countries were represented: Italy, Spain, Turkey, UK, Monaco, Malta, Greece, Tunisia, Belgium and France - 143 participants representing 116 companies/organisations registered beforehand on - 405 business meetings were held during a day. Pôle Mer PACA (Sea Innovation and Business Cluster) has chosen to develop its action along the axes of sustainable development and maritime and coastal safety/security. With 325 members behind it (businesses, laboratories, research and training centres, various actors in the maritime socio-economic sphere), Pôle Mer PACA intends to establish a centre of economic and scientific excellence in the French Riviera able to use the whole Mediterranean Basin as a testing ground. Pôle's action pulls together the French Mediterranean shipbuilding network (engineering, construction, equipment for vessels, repairing/conversion, deconstruction), an effective expertise in the field of innovation, together with support tools for its development programmes and the conquest of international markets. Pôle has a seat at CORICAN (Research and Innovation Council for Construction and Shipbuilding Operations) and at the Comité Stratégique de Filière Navale (Strategic Committee for the Shipbuilding Network). The 2012 season will see the concrete implementation of the Strategic Committee for the Shipbuilding Network project: OCEAN 21; Pôle Mer PACA will ensure the regional implementation of all operations, but also the definition and implementation at national level of the export strategy for all network actors. By creating a business convention dedicated to this sector of activity in collaboration with the Riviera Yachting Network and with the support of Méditerranée Technologies and the Club de la Croisière (Cruise Club), we should like to highlight the wealth of the region: our businesses, their professions, their skills, etc. Flush with the success encountered at the 1st convention, our inclusion in an international cruise market event such as Seatrade Med 2012, will mean that we should benefit from the overall media coverage and from the intensive focus on Marseille. The overall approach to super yachting in the French riviera make it without question a major centre at world level. The departments of the Alpes Maritimes on the one hand, and the Bouches du Rhône and Var on the other, are entirely complementary: the east of the region being rather more dedicated to brokerage and berthing yachts in the summer season, and the west to refit, maintenance and repair in the winter. The 2nd SuperYacht Repair & REfit Networking (SYRREN) business convention – organised in collaboration with Pôle Mer PACA (Sea Innovation and Business Cluster) and Méditerranée Technologies - enables there to be a special focus on our businesses, the extent of their approach, the diversity of their experience, their knowledge and their quality of work already recognised at international level; it is above all a wonderful place for meeting and trading with the many professionals in this network. At the heart of the dynamic yacht refit and repair, Marseille and its region are the benchmark. In addition, Marseille has been the commercial and trading capital of the Mediterranean for thousands of years. For these reasons, I am very happy that we should organise this event and its inclusion in Seatrade has given it greater exposure. The success recorded during the last convention is a good guarantee of success for the 2012 version. The PACA (Provence – Alpes – Cote d’Azur) region: the ideal setting for large yachts SYRREN chose the world’s leading yachting region. The regional repair/maintenance network It is the strong potential of the Mediterranean, and in particular the powerful attraction of the Côte d’Azur, which has led to the emergence of a yacht repair/maintenance network in our region. It is worth noting that approximately 3000 yachts are moored along the French Mediterranean coastline in the summertime, making it the premier boating area in the world. The presence of a captive audience, the development of a super yacht network has also been facilitated by: -­‐

the permanence of a construction culture and shipyard repair linked to shipyards at La Seyne-sur-Mer and La Ciotat and to pressure on the Marine Nationale at Toulon


the existence of dedicated infrastructures and facilities (La Ciotat, Marseille, Toulon: Saint-Mandrier, La Seyne-sur-Mer, etc.) even if investment programmes are needed for them to be adapted to meet the specific needs of luxury yachting


the support of a work base of skilled staff with a wide range of experience, especially in Marseille, La Ciotat and Toulon.

Nowadays the technical platform created by the combination of the repair/maintenance sites and the range of skilled staff, makes the regional coastline, and in particular the Marseille/La Ciotat/Toulon centres, a ‘spot’ leader in the yacht refit sector at global level. Mainly concentrated in the West of the PACA region, refitrepair maintenance represents an overall turnover for shipyards of 150 million Euros. It employs about 2,500 staff.

SYRREN: Personalised meetings The business convention is a ‘trading’ market place enabling network actors and foreign companies to meet and where network actors can also meet together. The shipyards are able to find skilled staff and subcontractors may discuss the possibilities of generating partnerships and exploring new markets. It goes without saying that in the same way, management and brokerage companies as well as ships’ captains can arrange meetings within the framework of the business convention. Some participants from SYRREN 2011 Navyclean, a member of Pôle Mer PACA (Sea Innovation and Business Cluster), with Ignaki Albaina, creator of an ultrasonic hull cleaning system, was able to finetune his yachting offer by putting together 10 meetings at SYRREN with yacht captains and cleaning agencies. ‘Prototypes are currently being tested. This has enabled me to pre-study market trends, to develop effective partnerships and ensure the future of the Navyclean company’, commented Ignaki Albaina. The Baux Shipyard (Chantier Naval des Baux), a member of the Riviera Yachting NETWORK, with Mirco Volorio, Sailing Manager, organised 15 meetings during SYRREN, with different suppliers, such as, for example, an Italian lifting company and a Spanish construction site. Yacht Assistance Services, a member of the Riviera Yachting NETWORK, with David Sieur, a former yacht captain who created this site preparation business in 2003, with a particular focus on protection and cleaning, spent a half-day at SYRREN. 'The organisation has been fantastic particularly with my appointments managed by the Enterprise Europe network. This enabled me to hold 2 qualified meetings in one half-day. And I also made several informal contacts over lunch'.

Compositeworks: a shipyard in La Ciotat October 2011: Compositeworks completed its 14,000 m2 new super yacht area, including a 50m painting hangar. A 8m€ investment was specifically designed to cater to motor yachts up to 45 M. Some key figures: -­‐ -­‐ -­‐ -­‐ -­‐

3 km of dock spaces, 6000 M2 hangar 104 yachts handled over the past 12 months (up to 138 mt) 72 employees (largest employer of the La Ciotat site) and about 300 subcontractors at peak activity 26m€ in revenues (the 2nd largest site on the Mediterranean after Barcelona): 90% of revenues from refit – 10% of revenues from the construction of new composite and carbon boats and composite parts for industry The international profile of the company: English/Dutch/Italian managersshareholders and 12 nations represented among our personnel.

Example of refit: MY FAITH (it was called "FORTUNATO" before its new American owner brought it to Compositeworks for rather substantial renovation). It is a 63 mt yacht built in Holland in 2000 by Feadship which has a substantial history and pedigree with its successive owners. The refit ran for 4 months with organization capacity, precision technical work and with a multitude of sub-contractors who had come to support the Compositeworks personnel. The work would normally have required 6 to 8 months, but there was a key date to be observed: the 60th birthday of the owner! Compositeworks pulled out all the stops to meet this deadline and was successful. Among the largest jobs, Compositeworks overhauled the Sun-Deck with, among other things, a carbon fiber swimming pool; the interiors were also completely redone and a major class inspection was carried out. Classic sailboat         Motor  boat  :  Simply  Si       Chantier Naval des Baux: a shipyard in Sanary-sur-Mer (between Toulon and Marseilles) Les Baux Shipyard: for the love of boats The Les Baux Shipyard is sixty years old. Thanks to its direct mastery of several specialties, the Les Baux Shipyard can undertake the refitting and restoring of classic and modern boats up to 30 meters long. This company, based in the port of Sanarysur-Mer, remains a human-sized adventure. The Les Baux Shipyard, currently managed by Eric Pecout, has 32 employees including 14 in Sanary. The most characteristic feature of this shipyard is the seniority of the team: 27 years for the painting manager, 18 years for the carpenter … And all of the work is done by the employees in marine carpentry, joinery work, painting and stratification... genuine in-house skills as in haute couture. Mirco Volorio, naval engineer and Manager for Large Yachts at the Les Baux Shipyard, enjoys above all the constant dialogue between the owners and the workers, to keep these boats alive so that they can sail for many years. Example of refit: SIMPLY SI - ITAMA 54 The owner decided to redo the bridge in teak. This boat was re-styled by the Les Baux Shipyard with paint, bridge, hull and arrangement of the bridge. Particular features of the work on the teak wood deck: The 55 mm slats are of a single length and can be as much as 14 m long. The exterior teak side deck on the bridge was made so as to collect and remove the water on the deck. The AWLGRIP type paint was applied in a cocoon with controlled temperature and humidity. The Les Baux Shipyard picked up the boat on June 1, 2012 and delivered it on July 4, 2012 in Saint-Tropez. Endel Navibord –GDF Suez Group: a shipyard in Toulon (La Seyne-sur-Mer) A shipyard with the process of an industrial group Endel Navibord, a company of 90 people specializing in ship repairs and industrial maintenance, is ISO 9001 and ISO 14 001 certified, and is also qualified for welding. It has an in-house design department. Endel Navibord is located on the coast on a plot of 3200 M2, with a dock of 75 linear meters which can be extended to 240 linear meters and 7.50 m draught accessible in all weather. Endel Navibord can handle all requests, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. International Marine Services (IMS): a shipyard in Toulon (Saint-Mandrier) For more than 20 years now, IMS has been doing business as a refit and repair shipyard specializing in yachts (from 20 to 50 meters). We are located on the French Mediterranean coast, in Toulon Bay. Every year, about 100 yachts are hauled out in the 13,000 m² facility. The yard has 250 m of pier space, 3,000 m² of sheds and a travel lift able to lift boats up to 320 T. IMS refits and maintains yachts (painting, mechanics, electricity, welding, interiors, shaft alignment, engine replacement, etc.) with the supervision of skilled and dedicated project managers. Example of refit: This time the HAYKEN 37m Heesen spent a total of 8 months in the shipyard. A list was made of the things to change and improve with the owner while cruising last summer and once the owner was happy with the list, the team got to work. For example, he wanted a boat with the best stereo system of the planet. The work also included exterior modification, many interior renovations, some work in the engine room, and a lot of painting. •

Exterior renovations: complete overhaul of the sun deck and the main deck: Making of a teak floor (36m²), making of coffee tables and a bar top of noble wood, making of polished stainless steel bar stools, making of laminate exterior furniture and benches, making of new cushions and sun beds for the main bridge, forepeak and sun deck, modification of the electrical circuit of the sun deck for the new stereo

Interior renovations: Replacement of the teak floor of the garage, reorganization of the kitchen with new appliances, wine cellar, making of bar furniture in the salon, laying of new wall-to-wall carpeting, renovation of the ceilings (salon, owner’s cabin)

Machine room: Replacement of 2 dialyzers, maintenance of the 2 propulsion engines, annual verification of the fire safety equipment, dismantling/reinstallation and verification of the line shafting: replacement of stern tube glands and hydrolube ring, Replacement of the anchor chain

International Technic Marine (ITM): a shipyard in Marseilles) ITM, the family spirit With over 10 years experience, ITM has become an essential figure in repairs for large yachts in the Mediterranean. The on-site team has been trained in the strict quality methods that have built ITM’s reputation for the respect of technical specifications, deadlines and announced budgets. Each yacht is monitored by a dedicated project manager. ITM has the exclusive use of 4 dry docks that can welcome yachts up to 120 m long and 16 m wide. The shipyard also has a 300 m repair dock. In 2007, ITM constructed a ventilated, heated and secured floating hangar. With its innovative logistical means, this system allows for the rapid undertaking of projects requiring a controlled atmosphere (paint, varnish, teak, etc.). ITM also provides onsite workshops for a selection of contractors specializing in yachting, which allow us to offer on demand, among other things, specialist carpenters, sheet metal workers, mechanics, hydraulics specialists, etc. The picture would not be complete if we did not mention ITM crew services, with the aim of meeting the crew daily needs and making sure that life on board is as comfortable as possible during the work periods. Example of refit: M/Y “SIRONA III” was one of the key projects of the 2010/2011 season. It was a major refit with a budget close to 4 M€, involving, among other things: work on the engines and generators, the installation of a new Jacuzzi, and above all a complete repaint of the ship, for which the highest quality industry standards were applied. M/Y “SIRONA III” has since returned to the yard for several successful visits, including most recently the replacement of the stern tubes of the ship, within a very tight time frame. Captain Colin Sutcliffe did not hesitate to bring the ship from the United States so that the work could be carried out at ITM. Monaco Marine: 6 shipyards in the PACA (Provence – Alpes – Cote d’Azur) Region The Monaco Marine Group, founded in 1995 by Michel Ducros, now has six locations in the Paca region. Six shipyards, based in La Ciotat, Antibes, Saint-Laurent du Var, Beaulieu sur Mer, Monaco and in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, which allow the company to offer a wide range of services for the repair and refitting of yachts, from standard upkeep to interior decoration. Example of refit: MYSTERE SHADOW is a 50-meter yacht for which the renovation as a luxury ship was assigned to Monaco Marine. “The owner did not want a complete renovation but rather luxury enhancements of the boat with a spa and sauna on board. He wanted to be able to use his boat on certain days,” said Stefano Pastrovich, the designer. Within 5 days, the sketches were finalized and approved by the owner! Within 9 months, the boat had been completely renovated. Inside, an open space was devoted to the spa. The Upper Deck is enclosed by a Bimini top in the safari spirit and can even receive a helicopter landing pad! The Solana 2 The Rivage Croisière Transmetal Industrie: shipyard in Toulon (Saint-Mandrier) Transmetal Industrie specializes in the construction of boats of up to 35 m. The construction and naval repair trades are controlled in-house to offer comprehensive services with respecting of the cost, deadline and quality commitments. Transmetal Industrie is also involved in refitting and maintenance and operates a boat launching ramp. Example of construction: The Rivage Croisière In March 2012, the Transmetal Industrie shipyard launched a catamaran called the “Rivage Croisière”. It was built for trips off the coast of Cannes. The “Rivage Croisière” can receive up to 100 passengers. In addition to the sails, the boat also has an electrical engine. These propulsion systems represent an environmental policy, with this boat oriented to sustainable development. The carbon dioxide emissions are very low. Example of construction: The Solana 2 At the beginning of summer 2012, the Transmetal shipyard launched a catamaran called Solana II, capable of carrying up to 220 m2 of sails and reaching a speed of 15 knots, by sail or with the engine. It weighs 40 tons and can carry 97 passengers and 3 crew members on board. The Solana represented about 8 months of work – its construction ran from November 2011 to June 2012 – and it also drew widely on local resources, with many sub-contractors involved in the project for upholstery, painting and work on the sails. The catamaran, designed by the firm Mer et Design, is the 4th boat ordered by the SEMC Colombo Line. Following its launching, the Solana 2 went to Corsica. Sud Marine Shipyard: A shipyard located in Marseille Sud Marine Shipyard is a shipyard specializing in repairs and refits of large yachts. The shipyard is a subsidiary of Sud Moteurs and has attained a reputation for its mechanical work. The yard has two dry docks, one of which is 175 meters long, and accommodates the world's largest yachts. The Group has its own technical staff to handle work on engines, generators, the propulsion system, to include propellers and propeller shaft, hull painting, etc. The Group also has available a full range of sub-contractors operating out of hangars that surround the site that perform work on metal and pipe work, electronics, interior refits, lacquer and varnish work, instrumentation, navigation and communication systems, etc. Mr. Gilles Guichet heads up this family company, in its fifth generation of yacht refitters, that works out of Marseille and worldwide with a crew that will come to a yacht's location anywhere.
