November 2018 | Issue #88 Published By Cedarbrook Media Group, LLC Editorial/Marketing Director Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com

Prosper Pumpkinfest Lights Up the Autumn Sky If you were in the town of Prosper on October 20th and joined us for Pumpkinfest at Frontier you know what a great time was had by all. The event was originally planned for the first weekend in October but was re-scheduled due to an inclement weather forecast. The reschedule date could not have brought more beautiful skies or a more peaceful and relaxing Autumn day for the attendees that we were so happy to have join us. There were pumpkins to be decorated, food to be eaten and great music by the band Southern Brave to keep people of all ages entertained. The ghosts and goblins that showed up caused quite a spooky stir in the Halloween Costume Parade, that showcased Princesses, Clowns, Super Heroes, Mermaids and few other shady, yet very cute, characters. Vendors lined the breezeway selling their products, while socializing with members of the community. We’d like to thank them, and every other business that participated, as well as our sponsors. Without them, events like these would not be possible and we want to continue the tradition of fun and free community events here in Prosper. When the sun slowly set in the west there was a special treat for the eyes of anyone in Prosper or the surrounding areas. The much anticipated and one of a kind Cedarbrook Media Firework Show! We set the bar high for future firework displays, and weather permitting, we hope they never disappoint! The skies came alive with fall colors of orange, purple and green…and the grand finale was simply gorgeous!! The 2018 Prosper Pumpkinfest was deemed a huge success and to sit under a blanket of stars while the sky lights up like the fourth of July, on a cool October evening…well, there’s just really nothing better than that! Again, thank you to the following sponsors, and we look forward to a fun and exciting lineup of events in 2019…STAY TUNED!!

r. Tom Chandler was born and raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. He completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1996. Dr Chandler earned a scholarship from the Army to attend the Case School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. While at Case he served as class president for 3 years and student council president his last. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 2001. Dr Chandler was commissioned as a Captain and served as Dentist for the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia where he completed his active-duty commitment. He received an Army Commendation Medal for clinical excellence and service along with the Army Physical Fitness Award all three years. Following his service, Dr. Chandler completed an Advanced Education and General Dentistry Residency program at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas 2004. He went on to receive his Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry in 2005. Dr Chandler has active memberships in the American Dental Association Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Dental Association and Dallas County Dental Society. His life wouldn’t be complete without his wonderful wife and two beautiful boys. He met Jennifer while completing his residency in 2004 and they were married in 2006. She’s also from Illinois, and he loves having their family all live in the same place. She is a dental hygienist and he enjoys having a spouse who understands his work on a first-hand basis. The oldest son Vince was born in January of 2011 and their youngest Max in January of 2014. Coming home and playing with them at the end of the day is the best way to unwind from work. They have one cat that their boys named “Poppy Cat.” Their practice offers a full variety of dental treatment under the same roof. From General and Cosmetic Dentistry to Orthodontics and Periodontics, they are able to meet their patients’ needs. This is valuable because it establishes continuity to patient care in a familiar environment. They get to know each patient on a personal level and believe that is important because every person is unique. It allows them to develop a treatment plan that provides for each patient’s specific needs and establish a path to lifetime care. Dr. Chandler’s business philosophy is based on the Golden Rule of the

Bible - Do to others as you would have them do unto you (Luke 6:31). He feels that this principle helps deliver the best customer service and care possible. He loves his job but like most others, is not fond of spending a lot of time in the chair himself. In his lifetime, he has experienced many different types of dental treatment and procedures and believes this allows him to empathize with his patients and what they are going through. He is able to tailor his approach accordingly and allow for the best experience possible. As you might imagine with his business philosophy, Dr. Chandler keeps God and family at the center of his life. Each day is a blessing and he fully enjoys life. A true optimist, he sees the positive side in every situation and when not at work, enjoys being at home spending time with his beautiful family. Their boys are growing up so fast and he enjoys being involved in every part of their activities and lives. Running and cycling are among Dr. Chandler’s most favorite ways to stay active and he also loves sports and enjoys watching his favorite Chicago franchises: The Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls. He is passionate about his fantasy football and baseball teams, as they are fun ways to keep in close contact with friends he grew up and went to school with. He loves all types of music, 80’s music being among his favorite and enjoys going to the movies with his wife when they are blessed with a date night. He believes it is important to serve and be active in the community in which you live to help it be the best environment for your family and others. He is a member of Fellowship Church and served in both the Children’s Ministry and the Setup Team. He is involved with the Prosper Area Soccer Organization and coaches both of his boys’ soccer teams. He enjoys going into schools to talk with kids about their teeth during dental health month and their practice supports several different High School sports teams in organizations as well as local businesses and municipal departments. Dr. Chandler feels blessed to have one of the first dental practices in Prosper. This area is growing and developing so much and his vision is to continue to grow and thrive with the community and to build a bond of trust and lifetime care with his patients. He strives to have a place patients and families can call their dental home and enjoy and look forward to coming in for their care.

easy Rustic Minestrone. This vegetarian classic is the perfect mix of marinara blended with aged cheeses, kale, zucchini and beans. Cranberry Riesling Brined Turkey

1 quart water 6 bay leaves 2 tablespoons whole black peppercorns 1 tablespoon mustard seeds 1 1/2 cups kosher salt 1 bottle (750 milliliters) Riesling wine 2 large shallots, thinly sliced, divided 8 cloves garlic, crushed but left in skins 1 bunch fresh thyme, divided 2 cups fresh cranberries, slightly crushed, divided 1 turkey (16 pounds), giblet package and neck removed ice water, for covering turkey 1/2 cup Bertolli Mild Olive Oil salt, to taste pepper, to taste

In pot, bring water, bay leaves, peppercorns, mustard seeds and kosher

salt to boil. Stir until salt is dissolved. Cool to room temperature. Pour brine into 5-gallon stock pot or container. Pour in wine then add one shallot, garlic, thyme (reserving some for stuffing turkey) and 1 cup cranberries. Slowly lower in turkey. Pour ice water into pot to cover turkey. Place lid on pot and refrigerate at least 24 hours. Heat oven to 500 F. Remove turkey from brine, pat dry and stuff with reserved shallot, thyme and cranberries. Place turkey in roasting pan. Generously massage olive oil into skin of turkey. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste. Use kitchen twine to tie legs together so turkey will keep its shape. Place in roasting pan and roast 20 minutes. Lightly brush skin again with olive oil, reduce heat to 350 F and roast until internal temperature reaches 155-160 F on meat thermometer. Allow turkey to rest, loosely covered with foil, 30 minutes before carving.

The Prosper Chamber of Commerce celebrated their 6th Annual Awards Dinner, themed “A Sweet Endeavor,” on October 18, 2019. The ceremony was presented by Baylor Scott and White Medical Center McKinney. Members of the Prosper Chamber, friends, family and business owners gathered together at the Piazza On The Green. Growing Prosper

Houseplants Even You Can’t Kill!! Easy Care, Minimal Maintenance Indoor Plants The following 6 houseplants pretty much grow themselves. In fact, your biggest problem may be what to do with all the baby plants they’ll produce. All 6 can be grown in the indirect light from a window and enjoy the same indoor temperatures as most people (55 - 75 degrees F). As with any houseplant, there is always the threat of insect pests like aphids, scale, spider mites and whiteflies. But disease-wise the only things you’re likely to incur is root rot, from too much watering. So, these 6 indoor plants are perfect for someone who always forgets to water their plants.

Easy Houseplants

Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior) earned its name by growing under the worst of conditions, even outdoors in deep shade. Prefers low lights. Grows in a clump. Leaves are sword-like, pointed, about 4” wide & 2’ long. Occasionally flowers indoors. A variegated version is available with white stripes. Christmas Cactus (Zygocactus or Schlumbergera) A trailing member of the cactus family that produces deep pink/red flowers in early winter. Seems to do its best when ignored. Can handle low light, but you’ll get more flowers in bright light. Pruning after blooming with keep the plant bushy. You can force your Christmas cactus to bloom in December by keeping it in complete darkness for 12 hours a night, beginning in about late-October, until buds appear. An even easier method is to subject it to cool temperatures (50 - 55 degrees F) starting in November. Just leave it on a windowsill at home while the heat is off or turned down low. Dragon tree (Dracaena marginata) & Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderian) Dracaena have long been the centerpiece of container plantings. Street plantings in towns across America feature one spiky dracaena stuck in the center of red blooming geraniums in a half whisky barrel. But there is actually a good amount of variety in dracaena and most make excellent, easy care houseplants. Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata) resembles a small palm tree and can reach heights of 10 feet tall. Lucky Bamboo isn’t bamboo at all. Both have stems that can be trained to bend or spiral thin stems are topped by clusters of slender arching leaves with narrow purple margins. They grow best in bright light and if allowed to dry out between waterings. Even if allowed to wilt, 22 | November 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

dracaena will spring back after watering, although the leaf tips may turn brown. Will tolerate low light. Lucky bamboo is often grown in water, but once substantial roots have formed, it is happier planted in soil. Mother-in-law’s tongue or Snake plant or Bird’s-nest plant (Sansevieria) Called Mother-in-law’s tongue because of its long, sharp, pointed leaves and because it never leaves! These are long-lived, easy care houseplants. Very tolerant of low light. Water sparingly or it will rot. Only 1 or 2 waterings are necessary indoors during the winter, depending on the humidity. Variegated forms need more light and can be more difficult to grow. There is also a dwarf variety, Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Hahnii’, called Bird’s Nest. Pothos (Epipremnum) One of the easiest houseplants to grow; almost impossible to kill. Trailing plants that just keep on growing, 10+ feet. Pruning the plants will keep them fuller at the base and each cutting can be rooted in water to create more plants. Pothos like to dry out between waterings, but if left dry too long, leaves will wilt and eventually dry and fall. Very tolerant of all types of light conditions, even artificial office lights. You can let them trail down or secure them to a support or trellis. There are many variegated and golden varieties available. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) Spider plants just keep on giving. You almost never see a spider plant that doesn’t have babies attached. Often grown in hanging baskets, spider plants will get 2 to 2½’ wide and 2 to 3’ long. Their roots tend to fill a pot, so repotting may be necessary every couple of years. When dangling babies start to form roots, they can be cut off and planted on their own.

Question: Hi Jimmie, enjoy reading your “Growing Prosper” monthly columns! Here is our question... This pomegranate is 4 years old, about 6-ft tall, located on the north side of our backyard with plenty of sun, but it never yields any flower, certainly no fruit. It appears very healthy as I am attaching a photo for you. Please help explain this mystery for us? Thank You so much!!! Johnny in Prosper. Answer: Hi Johnny, thanks for reading! The Pomegranate tree can be a tricky one…you should be fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in March and July with about 1 pound per 3 feet of height and maintain moist soil conditions. Also a nice layer of Organic mulch is good…needs to be also in full sun like a soccer field type sun. Most importantly, when dealing with these types of trees you generally always plant two or more of them to encourage cross pollination. All these things will solve your flowering/fruit issues friend. Question: Jimmie, thank you for taking the time to educate! Many times I have gone to a Nursery or Home Depot, and I ask questions and I mostly get a reply I feel like is either inaccurate or a short answer to whisk me out the door and on to the next person they can sell something to. You really take the time to thoroughly explain yourself and you have always emailed me back personally every time I have contacted you. Pretty hard to find these days! Just want you to know there are people out here that really do appreciate the time and effort you put into your columns and feel like I am a more educated Gardener for it!! Thank you again! Madison W. in Prosper Answer: Hi Madison, people like yourself are the reason I started doing this back in 2005 and am still going at it!! Thank you so much for your kind words. Until next time…Happy Gardening!!

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS By: Rosh Ramanujam

The holiday season is an exciting time of year, especially for children. Whether you observe Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or simply ring out the old year and welcome the new, the season is alive with cooking, shopping, decorating, wrapping, singing and playing games. It’s also a time that’s ripe with opportunities to pass down traditions that create cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Children always learn better when they’re doing something fun. This time of year, there are plenty of entertaining ways to start new traditions to help them learn about these special days and the stories relating to your faith or culture. Here are some ideas for a few things you can do: Cook together as a family – Cooking with your children is a fun – and tasty – way to pass along family recipes and lore from generation to generation. Whether you’re making Christmas cookies, latkes for Hanukkah or Chakhokhbili for Kwanzaa, you can use the occasion to talk about your faith or culture, while mixing in a little math as they measure out ingredients for the recipes. Donate a toy or book – A nice way help make the season special for someone less fortunate is to donate a toy or book. Let your child pick out the item to donate and have them wrap it. It also presents a good opportunity to talk about being thankful for all that you have in your life. 26 | November 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

Volunteer – This is another effective way to help teach empathy. Find an organization in your community that participates in a holiday outreach program like a soup kitchen or clothing or toy drive and see what your family can do to help. Read together – Reading together as a family is an enjoyable way to learn more about the holiday you celebrate or those observed by others. After you’ve read a story or book, talk about it together to share what you learned or liked about it. Make a calendar – A fun seasonal art activity is making a calendar. You can make an Advent calendar to count down the days until Christmas or calendars to mark the nights of Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. I would like to wish everyone in our community the happiest of holidays. I am grateful for the blessings that have come our way in 2018. And am excited for the promise 2019 holds as we enter the new year. I’m Rosh, the owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper, located at 650 North Preston Road. We are excited to open our brand-new, state-of-the-art academy in the Prosper community. We serve children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. The educational programs at Kiddie Academy of Prosper emphasize continuous, open communication between teachers and parents concerning each child’s development. But most importantly, we learn while we’re having fun. We invite children to embark on the Kiddie Academy journey that will enable them to learn and grow socially, physically and intellectually. To learn more visit kiddieacademy.com/prosper or call 469-356-2595 or email prosper@kiddieacademy.net.

Nourishing Our Neighbors By Jodie Brownd

Bethlehem Place began more than 25 years ago as a mission of the Prosper United Methodist Church. Scott Jones, then pastor for the church, encouraged the congregation to create programs for the betterment of our community. Empty baskets were placed in the church foyer to collect food for those in need. With the support of Prosper High School, food was stored and distributed from a field house on the football field. As word spread, the mission quickly grew beyond the congregation of PUMC. Additional Prosper churches and area residents joined forces to donate time and goods. The mission grew into a non-denominational, community-driven organization to support the area’s underserved residents. A shelter was erected on PUMC’s property to serve as the distribution center and Bethlehem Place, a 501c3 charitable organization, was officially born. As Prosper and the neighboring communities have grown, so too has the demand for food. Bethlehem Place has seen a 25-30% increase in demand year-over-year. According to the Hunger Center of North Texas, more than 112,000 residents of Collin County lack consistent access to adequate food. Today, their supporters include businesses, organizations, charities, churches and families. They have no paid administration so almost every penny gained from donations goes directly towards replacing their building and feeding the hungry. Executive Director of Bethlehem Place, Betsy Winters, is a wealth of information regarding the needs of our community. Whether you are an individual or family in need, or maybe you’d like to volunteer, there is a place for everyone at Bethlehem Place. Lending a helping hand and being willing to receive, is in most cases the catalyst that makes a difference in turning lives around for so many. “We understand that everyone goes through difficult times, and we strive to make sure that needs are met in a highly dignified and graceful way. We offer our resources year around, assisting the individual as well as the entire family and we believe that is what sets us apart from other organizations. Believe it or not, we have hungry families in Prosper and our surrounding communities. Among those trying to make ends meet are hard-working adults and seniors. Helping families eat improves not only the quality of life for those who are being served but unites our community toward one of unity through service.” Winters, says “Prosper is unique in that approximately 75% of our food comes from donations from our community; churches, businesses, individuals and other organizations. Everyone working for Bethlehem Place is a volunteer. We have no paid positions, so every dollar donated goes directly towards Nourishing Our Neighbors.” 28 | November 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

This year Bethlehem Place will distribute food to prepare over 4,000 nutritious meals to underserved individuals and families. How can you help? Donate Food! Food donations are critical to the mission of Bethlehem Place. Every 40 lbs. helps to feed a family of 4 for a week. Drop off your food donations between 4:30-5:30 every Tuesday afternoon. If this time isn’t convenient for you, please email info@ bethlehemplace.org to discuss convenient drop off times.
