Life & Luxury Magazine CISD News

Happy New Year Celina ISD! As we welcome our students back to school in this new year of 2021, it’s hard to believe that we are just months away from marking a full year of work under very new circumstances. This past year has completely altered the landscape for so much of what we all consider to be most important-especially our interactions with one another. As I reflect on this past year, I am proud of how our schools have partnered with our community to bring as much normalcy to our kids’ lives as possible. Few districts across the state opened their doors on time in August with face-to-face learning, and fewer still did so with such a large percentage of students opting to learn in-person like Celina ISD (74%). Our teachers and staff committed to providing strong virtual and in-person instruction while also taking extra precautionary measures to keep our kids and colleagues safe. Additionally, our coaches and fine arts staff have been remarkable at providing opportunities for our kids to safely participate in activities and experiences that are vital to the overall learning of our students. For the first time in Celina ISD’s history, our enrollment surpassed 3,000 students, and by the time of this article’s publication, we will have broken ground on a brand-new 6-8 grade middle school that will open in the fall of 2022. Our district’s most recent demographic report suggests that Celina ISD has the potential to add 3,000 more students over the next four years, and we anticipate opening one new elementary school in both 2023 and 2024. Looking further into the future, our demographic report also notes that CISD will likely approach 12,000 students during the 2030-2031 school year. We are on the cusp of exponential growth in our community! Celina was recently ranked first in The Dallas Business Journal as the fastest growing city in the North Texas area, and our district is proactively planning for new campuses, district-wide improvements, and land purchases that will prepare the district for the challenges that will come with this growth. Celina ISD and the City of Celina have a long history of addressing any challenge by seeing not the problem before us, but seeing instead the opportunity. We are excited about these opportunities, as we actively shape our district culture to enhance the truly unique facets of our community while welcoming new Bobcats to our district. What has always been a strength for Celina ISD is the greatest calling in our district/city partnership: true connection is about taking care of one another. Part of Celina ISD’s commitment to our community is financial prudence as we continue to grow. The Celina ISD Board of Trustees approved a 20202021 district tax rate of $1.4832, which is the lowest school district tax rate in over 20 years. As districts across the state prepare for this next legislative session, school funding will continue to be a great challenge. This challenge is even greater for smaller school districts, particularly fast-growth districts like Celina ISD. We are excited for the challenges ahead, and we are thrilled to welcome a new year that brings new opportunities to serve our families as we continue to serve our kids. Sincerely,

Tom Maglisceau Superintendent, Celina ISD

When it comes to home design, color can change everything. From understated, clean hues and calming neutrals to soft greens and mid-tone colors with artistic qualities, a whole new style is just brush strokes away. With the right color palette, you can transform your space to highlight contemporary trends while creating your desired ambiance. These curated Clark+Kensington color palettes, showcasing on-trend looks for 2021, are heavily inspired by nature and natural materials like raw cotton, linen, wood tones and soft, peaceful greens. The colors invite the best of the outdoors inside so you can design a personal refuge where you’re free to relax and unwind.

Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity STACY CATE

Each of these three collections, assembled by the experts at Ace Hardware, can help conjure a sense of calm and offer inspiration so you can thoughtfully incorporate color into your home. MINDFUL LIVING If you want to bring new layers of wellness to your life, the calming neutrals and soft greens that make up this refreshing and cleansing palette may be just what you’re seeking. The muted tone of Fair Isle is a soft neutral that pairs well with a wide range of colors, such as the inviting Blue Spruce green that resembles a richly treed mountainside. Additionally, Swiss Coffee and Natural White offer neutral options that lend a surprising sense of coziness while Smokey Taupe and Playas de Cancun provide alternatives to bring bolder, but still soothing, color to your space. UNDERSTATED IMPACT If minimalism and clean lines reflect your desire to simplify your surroundings, you’ll likely be drawn to a “less is more” approach to design. This uncluttered sensibility allows you to focus on key elements of a room that are impactful yet edited. To achieve this look, build your palette around slate-like hues of gray and blue, such as Gothic Iron or a cooler take on slate with Magic Fountain. Options like Silent White and Abstract Gray lend neutral warmth while an earthy burgundy like Red Tulip or the deep, not-quite-black tones of Midnight Stroll are ideal for creating a focal point. CREATIVE ESCAPE This palette of mid-tone colors with artistic qualities may be best suited for someone who embraces traditional crafting techniques and delights in working with his or her hands. Striking slate blue Midnight Oil is reminiscent of waves crashing in the dark of night while Subtle Gray offers a softer take on the slate-like tones. As the name suggests, Fiddlehead Fern brings lush vegetation to mind while Act Naturally and Caramel Apple deliver pops of color consistent with streaks of an orange-kissed sunset. The most subtle of this collection, Beach Cottage, features a slightly peach-to-pinkish tint that gives unique character to a neutral selection. Any color in these palettes can be selected and ordered from the comfort of your home online using in-store pickup, curbside pickup or delivery from your local store. Start with color samples to test your colors on your walls in different locations and under different lighting then order your gallons and painting supplies when you’re ready to complete your project. Hitting “Refresh” In Your Garden

How many times do you hit “Refresh” in a day? Sometimes the established home garden can use the same. As landscape matures, things change. Trees get taller and cast deeper shade; bushes outgrow their original compactness and places in the garden. People’s lifestyles change, and that area given over to a sandbox or a swing set may no longer be needed. Or you may have purchased an older home with mature plantings that no longer work or at least they don’t satisfy you. The time comes in almost every landscape plan when “refreshing” is the way to go. An Objective Look To start refreshing a garden you have to take a hard, honest look at what you have. Because changes in the garden can happen subtly over years, you might overlook the obvious, such as an increase in shade or a physical change in your garden. For example, maybe you added a deck and now traffic patterns have changed, or you took down the swing set and the focal point of your garden is now in the wrong place. Pretend you are the new owner of the house and garden you are surveying and look at it with as much objectivity as you can. Trees and Shrubs One of the biggest changes that can creep up silently on a garden is the growth of trees and shrubs. They not only grow taller and larger, but they can dramatically influence what can or can’t grow under or around them. Trees can be trimmed professionally to thin out branches and allow more light to filter through to the ground. In extreme cases, such as too many trees planted too close together (or that somehow just grew there), 10 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

removal of some of the trees in addition to trimming may be the answer. Professional advice and service from tree experts is highly recommended for trimming and removal. Overgrown shrubs can also be trimmed back or removed entirely if no longer desirable. As much as it hurts emotionally and as much as it can be visually unattractive for a while, a severe trimming can often rejuvenate old and woody shrubs. Early spring is often a good time to do severe trimming, this will give them the entire growing season to “Refresh” themselves and not succumb to a winter freeze. I always recommend feeding when cutting things back 30% or more. Once they begin growing again you can control future pruning. Plants planted around the base of a tree compete with the tree roots for water and nutrients. Creating raised beds for plants will reduce this competition and can add a new feature to your garden. If raised beds are not practical or wanted, when planting under a tree or near its roots put the plants in pots and then sink the pots in holes around the tree. This, too, will reduce competition. Problem areas Almost every home has a problem area. Often it is the north side of the house, or a walkway along one side of the house, or an area behind the garage or a shed. Frequently, a simple cleanup is the first order of business. For example, once cleaned up, a dirt pathway can be spruced up with mulch or a layer of gravel and the addition of stepping stones. A north wall that never gets any sun can be brightened with containers of shade plants grouped or lined along the way. If there is an overhang,

hanging baskets can be used, or they can be hung from wrought iron hooks made for baskets. Alternating tall and short containers, and varying plant types and colors can turn a formerly drab area into a new “refreshed” look!

Focal Points

Dogs | Cats | Birds | Exotics | Pocket Pets and Reptiles All Dog and Cat Breed Grooming and Boarding

All gardens need a focal point. A small garden needs only one, and larger gardens may need several. A focal point draws the eye to a special feature or planting and helps give the rest of the garden a more orderly look. Focal points can be as simple as one spectacular plant or planting among the others, or a feature such as a gazing globe, a water pond or a piece of sculpture or statuary. In larger gardens focal points can be created for different areas. On a patio, for example, a grouping of different sized pots can serve as a focal point, with one large pot being the center of attention. Tall plants grouped in a mass and surrounded by shorter plants can create a focal point in a garden bed, as can a contrast in color or plant type.

Ornamental features such as large rocks, a pedestal, a statue, or bench are natural focal points. A quick and easy feature to add to a bed is a bird bath or a bird feeder. An arbor trellis planted with climbing vines such as Carolina Jessamine can be an eye catching bright yellow focal point for an entire garden.

Color Coordination A coordinated color scheme can really pull a garden together and refresh one that may have gone stale. Use a combination of three or four colors to aesthetically tie things together. Red, white, and blue make your garden patriotic. Pink, white and green is cool and refreshing. Yellow, blue, and white are a bright summery combination. You can break the scheme every now and then when you have a great plant that doesn’t fit the “rules,” and then it becomes the “Refreshing” exception that points out what your theme is.

Now Open in Celina!

Planning Ahead Refreshing doesn’t always have to be a major undertaking. Once you have a plan in place, small adjustments every year or two will keep you from having to start from scratch. Until next time…. Happy Gardening!

5 Jackets to Keep You Toasty This Winter

Colder weather is coming, which makes it a great time to assess your outerwear situation. Do your coats and jackets have what it takes to get you through another chilly season of looking great and staying warm? If you sense that your coat collection could use some reinforcements, look no further than this guide, where we walk you through some up-to-the-minute coat and jacket styles, so you can ask your Stylist for whatever’s right for you. OVERCOATS The Stylish Staple If the weather is cold and you need coverage, the overcoat is for you. An overcoat can be made from a variety of fabrics (look for a warm wool or synthetic for colder temperatures) and generally falls somewhere below the knee—look for button-up or belted. An overcoat can easily be dressy or casual. FAUX FUR JACKETS Glam to Go What’s better than being toasty warm? Being toasty warm and feeling like a style star. Faux fur is the best way to add an on-trend look to your outerwear wardrobe. Whether you choose a faux fur “chubby” (a jacket that hits at the waist), a vest or longer length coat, you’ll be cozy and fashionable. Not ready to go full-faux-fur? Try a piece trimmed in the fuzzy stuff. HOODED COATS Extra Warmth Where You Need It How many times have you left your winter hat on a restaurant banquette, bus seat or sitting at home? With a hooded coat or jacket, a cold head is a thing of the past. Hoods come on jackets and coats, and on a number of styles. We love a fur trimmed hood for rocking the adorably Arctic look. ANIMAL PRINT COATS Walk on The Wild Side A distant cousin to faux fur outerwear, animal prints are another great way to add personality to your outerwear game. Think about it: why shouldn’t your coat or jacket be just as fashionable as the clothes you wear under it? Leopard print, in particular, looks amazing with a bright color peeking out from underneath. PUFFER JACKETS Get Down with It

Puffers have been on the winter radar of all the most stylish people for the last few seasons. We love that a puffer can be sporty, luxe, or even have feminine details like bows or special buttons. No matter your style, a puffer (synthetic or down fill) is an über-warm way to express your (very fashionable) personality.

Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Ask your Stylist to upgrade your look (and glam factor) by adding a few shimmering accessories to your next Fix. Visit http://www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix!

Match Your Winter Skin Care Routine with Your Active Lifestyle

Winter weather can pose some unique challenges to your skin, especially if you’re trying to maintain an active workout routine. Exposure to the elements while exercising outdoors can have a harsh impact on the skin. On the other hand, the humidity and constant running of heaters can also wreak havoc if the weather forces you to work out indoors. “The winter season can be a challenge for those trying to maintain their workout regimens, especially this year when many people are staying closer to home,” said Dr. Jeanine Downie, board-certified dermatologist and Medline Remedy consultant. “An outdoor workout is a great way to get some fresh air and burn calories, but it’s also important to nourish your skin before and after you’ve completed your workout.” Just like establishing a good winter workout routine, there are some things you can do to keep your skin in shape all winter long. Use sunscreen any time you venture outdoors and dress for whatever elements you may be facing. Be sure to remove wet clothes, which can create friction and skin irritation, immediately after returning inside. Limit the length of hot showers, which can also dry out skin, and use a quality moisturizer, especially after exposure to harsh weather.

LONG-LASTING MOISTURE When you spend time working out outdoors, your body’s natural hydration is more prone to evaporating. That, in turn, can lead to dry skin. Whether you’re battling rough skin or simply want to help keep your skin hydrated, a clinically tested lotion can help maintain the skin’s natural defenses. After spending time outside and every time you wash your hands or bathe, help retain moisture for up to 24 hours with an option like Remedy Dermatology Series Body Lotion, which includes safflower oleosomes for lasting moisturization with natural oils. Its smooth, rich formula absorbs quickly, leaving skin feeling soft with no greasy or oily residue. ENRICHED SKIN NUTRITION Repeated exposure to the winter elements can take a toll, leading to dry, cracked and dehydrated skin. A quality lotion that matches your skin type can help. Formulated by skin care specialists for dry, dehydrated skin, Remedy Dermatology Hand & Body Moisturizing Cream contains soothing antioxidants and vitamins that support skin nutrition. The fragrance-free, hypoallergenic cream goes on rich and thick but still absorbs readily into the skin to help it stay hydrated. The proprietary botanical blend of humectants, manuka honey, natural oil emollients, ceramides and botanical nutrition is also free of 80 of the most common allergens that contribute to skin sensitivity. Learn more about winter skin care at remedyderm.com.
