REINVENTING CRAFT The cultural meaning of making has lost its value within our fast-paced consumer society. Through consumerism and capitalism, processes that once conveyed social significance and pride have become obsolete; craftsmanship and human tools have been replaced by machines. Industries now value product over progress, which results in a society that only values process as a means to an end. Craft represents the history, discipline, and pride of the product. How can an architecture be a tool to facilitate this significance of making? How do we begin to bring this matter into perspective of the public?

VERTICAL URBANITY In the 21st century, Urbanism blurs with natural landscapes and creates hybrid places in cities, landscapes, and geographies. What lies in urbanity is a forest of skyscrapers that become the defining characteristic of the structural organization of the city. A clear distinction is made between what is ground and what is sky. This emerging typology further separates the public and private realms physically and metaphorically. How can architecture begin to draw patterns and concepts from a urban grids such as that of New York City’s to inform the design process of a vertical urban space? Flex Void takes void conditions found in the city grid to develop a new way of bridging the public and private realms.

MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY A group project done during my third year at the UVa undergraduate program, the project was to explore the interface between infrastructures of production and the built environment. Our site is located on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio, a place that once thrived off the industry of material-manufacturing. The project seeks to use steel space-framing to test the limits of both material strength and structural design. It creates an open floor plan to support the demand for open circulation throughout the building. The project functions as a gallery as well as a spectacle for the public. TEAM MEMBERS: IVIE PETRUS, KASSIE LANDVAY, MADDIE IRIBARREN, CHUN TSENG

Our team used Grasshopper and Karamba extensions for rhino to develop the form of the building. The steelframe creates interesting shadow conditions as time passes, which can enhance the experience for the viewing gallery.

P R O F E S S I O N A L SUNYIP TOFU SHOP

During the summer of 2017, I worked as an architectural intern for Style Design Limited Co. I spent a large portion of my time as a part of the team working on a renovation project for a historic tofu factory located in Kowloon City. The shop located in the Sham Shui Po District has been tackling with licensing issues and the need to renovate due to sanitation and congestion. My job was to sit in during meetings, assist in drawing elevations and building the 3D model for the project. I primarily used AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Vray as tools for representation.
