B

lessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. Reflection True Communion The Eucharist is the mystery of sacrificial love. Therein lies its whole meaning, all its symbolism, all its power. In it Christ again and again is voluntarily slain for the sins of the world. Again and again the sins of the world are raised by Him upon the cross. And He gives Himself—his Body and Blood—for the salvation of the world. By offering Himself as food for the world, by giving to the world communion in His Body and Blood, Christ not only saves the world by His sacrifice, but

makes each person a “christ,” and unites him to His own self-sacrificing love for the world. He takes flesh from the world, He deifies this human flesh, He gives it up for the salvation of the world and then unites the world again to this sacrificed flesh—both for its salvation and for its participation in this sacrificial offering. Along with Himself—in Himself— Christ offers the world as well as a sacrifice for the expiation of our sins, as if demanding from the world this sacrifice of love as the only path toward union with Him, that is, for salvation. He raises the world as well upon the cross, making it a participant in His death and in His glory.  .  .  . The Eucharist .  .  . is the Gospel in action. It is the eternally existing and eternally accomplished sacrifice of Christ and of Christlike human beings for the sins of the world. Through it earthly flesh is deified and having been deified enters into communion again with earthly flesh. In this sense the Eucharist is true communion with the divine. And is it not strange that in it the path to communion with the divine is so closely bound up with our communion with each other? It assumes consent to the exclamation: “Let us love one ­another, that with one mind we may confess Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: the Trinity, one in essence and undivided.” Mother Maria Skobtsova, Essential Writings Mother Maria Skobtsova (1891–1945) was an Orthodox nun and martyr who perished in the gas chamber of Ravensbruck just days before the liberation of the camp.

June 10–16 Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Within the Word Elijah Elijah, a main character in this week’s Lectionary, enters the biblical story in a time of national crisis. A three-year drought has pushed the land to the edge of starvation. But even more pressing than the lack of food for humans and animals is the lack of focus upon the Lord as life-giver. The Lord commands Elijah to withdraw to a deserted valley where ravens will provide him with bread and meat (1 Kgs 17:1-6). This miraculous feeding sets the stage for Tuesday’s account of Elijah’s mission to a starving widow in Sidon in the land of Phoenicia. He brings the Lord’s gifts not only of food but also of new life for her ailing son who had stopped breathing. Outside the land of Israel, Elijah brings the Lord’s blessing without opposition. But a drastic change happens upon his return to Israel. The ruling party in Samaria around 850 BC— King Ahab and his wife Jezebel—prefer to worship the ­Canaanite deities Baal and Asherah. Elijah’s single-minded devotion to the Lord crashes head-on with the more pluralistic approach of Ahab and Jezebel, who do not want to displease any of the gods, especially those traditionally regarded as providers of rain. They label Elijah the troublemaker—a compliment Elijah returns to Ahab in their long-awaited confrontation at Mount Carmel (Wednesday). Elijah challenges Ahab for not relying on the Lord alone but rather hedging his bets by attending to a number of deities and thinking that this diversified approach will keep his rule and the stability of the land intact. 118

The dramatic contest turns on which deity would respond to the request to ignite a sacrificial fire. The prophets of Baal and Asherah carry out their rituals without success. When the Lord brings fire to Elijah’s offering, Elijah not only points to rain clouds forming over the Mediterranean, he also summons those onlookers who wish to be exclusively loyal to the Lord to eliminate those who do not (verses not included in the Lectionary). However troubling this war-like scene may be to a contemporary reader, the story emphasizes the necessity of single-hearted devotion to the Lord if one is to find life. Curiously enough, Elijah’s dramatic victory over the supporters of Ahab and Jezebel vanishes in the succeeding episode (1 Kgs 19:1-8). Here we see Elijah fleeing far away to the south into the Sinai Desert. He takes a rest shortly after entering the Sinai and begs for his life to end. This “burnedout” Elijah bears little resemblance to the victorious Elijah previously described. We glimpse the struggles he has gone through in trying to combat the divided religious loyalties of the Israelites. The angel of the Lord visits Elijah, gives him food, and challenges him to get up and move toward Sinai. Instead of giving Elijah a release from his duties, the Lord adds to them and makes him open himself to trust in the Lord more deeply. It is at Mount Sinai where Elijah, the new Moses, perceives the Lord’s presence not in the storm or the earthquake but in the “still, small voice” (1 Kgs 19:12-13). The quiet blue-flame of the Lord’s presence on Mount Sinai replaces the dramatic sparks on Mount Carmel—something to remember when our trust in God wavers, when we struggle to remain un­ dividedly loyal to our Lord and giver of life. —Fr. Apostle (First Century) St. Barnabas, one of the earliest missionaries in the Church, played a vital role in spreading and translating the Gospel to a gentile audience. Though Barnabas was not one of the original Twelve, St. Luke in Acts of the Apostles terms him an apostle on account of his having received a special commission from the Holy Spirit. One of his first and most fruitful contributions was to vouch for St. Paul, a recent convert who was still feared by the other apostles for his previous persecution of the Church. Later Barnabas was sent on a preaching mission to Antioch. As his labors there bore fruit, he sent for Paul to join him; together they implanted a thriving Church. It was in Antioch that “the disciples were for the first time called Christians.” Barnabas and Paul set off on the first formal overseas missionary journey, first to Cyprus, and then to the mainland of Asia Minor. They initially preached to the Jews, but when rebuffed there they reached out successfully to gentile audiences. After a disagreement, Barnabas and Paul parted ways (Acts 15:36-39). Paul’s story dominates the later narrative of Acts, while Barnabas slips off the pages of history. According to legend he returned to Cyprus, where he was martyred in the year 61. “We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, ‘who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.’   ” —St. Barnabas (Acts 14:15)

New Testament: it is attached not only to Barnabas but also to Paul, Silas, Timothy, Andronicus, and even the woman Junia! This spiritual grammar is further illuminated through today’s Gospel, which we could read as a reflection on ­Barnabas’s life. He sold his property (the blessed “poor in spirit,” Acts 4:36). He was a collaborator (the blessed “meek,” Acts 11:22). He tried, though was unsuccessful, to make peace between Paul and Mark (the blessed “peacemaker,” Acts 15:38). And legend has it he was martyred (the blessed “persecuted”). The feast of Barnabas asks us what’s in the name “apostle.” And today’s Gospel invites us to embrace the beatitudes not only as virtuous attitudes but as acts of mission and witness. Who knows, in living the beatitudes we might inherit that apostolic name as well. Fr. Edward Foley

Reflection The Name of Apostle “A rose by any other name .  .  .” One of the most memorable musings on the nature of a name rolls off the tongue of a love-smitten Shakespearean teenager. In pondering the name of her beloved, Juliet asks, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet.” Juliet’s struggle with naming comes to mind in this liturgy that calls Barnabas an “Apostle.” If you had to memorize the names of the twelve apostles and mentally run that file through your head, the name Barnabas does not show up. So what’s in a name? Happily this feast provides multiple nuances for our spiritual grammar, including the clarification that “the twelve” and “apostles” are not synonyms. Actually the term “apostle” (literally, “one sent forth”) appears seventy-nine times in the

Tuesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Spiritual Guide (1875–1941) Through her voluminous writings, Evelyn Underhill did much to awaken modern interest in the mystical traditions of Christianity. As a popular writer she went further, showing the relevance of mysticism for ordinary people living in the modern world. Underhill was raised as a nominal Anglican in a comfortable British home. Though attracted to Roman Catholicism, she chose, for a number of reasons (including the strong objections of her husband), not to formally convert. Her study of the Christian mystics resulted in 1911 in a landmark book, Mysticism. At the time neither Protestants nor Catholics took mysticism very seriously—the former regarding it as a form of Catholic neurosis, the latter believing it was something relevant only to God’s chosen few. For Underhill, mysticism was “the art of union with Reality.” She showed the origins of mysticism in Scripture—in the life of Jesus, St. Paul, and the early disciples. As such, it was an essential expression of the Christian life; it was simply the experiential dimension of faith, “the soul of religion.” Over time, Underhill became a spiritual director to many people. She emphasized the practical dimension of spirituality. God “made us in order to use us, and use us in the most profitable way”—sometimes in heroic fashion, but more often in our “ordinary mixed life of every day” where we live out our religious vocation. Underhill died on June 15, 1941. “We are agents of the Creative Spirit in this world. Real advance in the spiritual life means accepting this vocation with all it involves.” —Evelyn Underhil l

Reflection A Light in the Darkness There is a custom in rural Norway of hanging a light in one’s window that will burn throughout the night. In earlier times these lights shining through dense fog or swirling snow could be a saving beacon for a disoriented traveler. In today’s Gospel Jesus challenges his disciples to go further than just hanging a light in the window. He tells them: “You are the light of the world .  .  . and your light must shine before others.” It’s hard for us to see ourselves as light for anyone. We are so aware of our own inner darkness, fear, or doubt. Like the widow in Elijah’s day who saw only her meager supply of flour and oil, we feel our poverty. But the prophet urged her to go further—to trust—and God worked through her limited means to feed her household for a year. Often it is through the meager good deeds of one of Jesus’ disciples that others catch a glimpse of the works of God. John the Evangelist has Jesus saying: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). And Matthew has the Lord tell his disciples: “You are the light of the world” (Matt 5:14). Ought we not assume that a profound relationship is being described here? The “I am” and the “You are” imply an identification that carries a far-reaching responsibility: as Jesus is light, so we must be light—light in the dark for a child, a friend, a fellow traveler, a world. How to Use Give Us This Day

Guide to Lectio Divina

Why a guide for using a daily prayer resource? Because daily prayer can seem daunting. Though I grew up saying prayers daily, daily prayer was a practice I came to well into my adult life. It was challenging at the start. Even if we’ve settled into the rhythm and practice of daily prayer, there is much to gain from the simplicity and substance of a resource such as Give Us This Day:

Choose a word or phrase of the Scriptures you wish to pray. It makes no difference which text is chosen, as long as you have no set goal of “covering” a certain amount of text. The amount of text covered is in God’s hands, not yours. Read. Turn to the text and read it slowly, gently. Savor each portion of the reading, constantly listening for the “still, small voice” of a word or phrase that somehow says, “I am for you today.” Do not expect lightning or ecstasies. In lectio divina, God is teaching us to listen, to seek him in silence. God does not reach out and grab us but gently invites us ever more deeply into his presence. Ponder. Take the word or phrase into yourself. Memorize it and slowly repeat it to yourself, allowing it to interact with your inner world of concerns, memories, and ideas. Do not be afraid of distractions. Memories or thoughts are simply parts of yourself that, when they rise up during lectio divina, are asking to be given to God along with the rest of your inner self. Allow this inner pondering, this rumination, to invite you into dialogue with God. Pray. Whether you use words, ideas, or images—or all three—is not important. Interact with God as you would with one who you know loves and accepts you. Give to God what you have discovered during your experience of meditation. Give to God what you have found within your heart. It is not necessary to assess the quality of your lectio divina, as if you were “performing” or seeking some goal. Lectio divina has no goal other than that of being in the presence of God by praying the Scriptures.

  • Prayers for morning and evening include Scripture, intercessions, and other helpful prompts.   • “Blessed Among Us” features models of holy living who have gone before us and pray for us.   • Mass texts and reflections convey the depth and breadth of Scripture—and of God’s love for us in Christ. You don’t need to attend daily Mass to pray with those texts. Nor do you need to pray with the daily content “in order.” You may wish to pray with all the content and not miss a word. You may be drawn to just a few words or particular features that give you pause. All or any of this is fine. Let the Holy Spirit be your daily guide—and be sure to explore the inspiring weekly and monthly pieces in each issue as well (see the user-friendly calendar and contents on pp. 2–4). Whenever you pray—even if you don’t feel instant “results”— entrust your prayer to the Holy Spirit, who surely and certainly will lead you into communion with God and others.
