“The return of a tradition,” said a smiling Harbor Springs Area Fire Department chief, John Cupps, Jr. as he looked at the long line of happy youngsters waiting to visit with Santa Claus last Saturday, Nov. 26, in downtown Harbor Springs. Pictured above, brought in on a fire truck, just like he was for many years, the jolly old soul plopped down in front of the Lyric Theatre and listened to Christmas wishes while firefighters passed out candy and helped keep the line moving.

Bustling, beautiful holiday weekend (Photo by Kevin Johnston)

Mailed locally and around the country every Wednesday, Harbor Light subscriptions make great gifts! It was a picture perfect day in Harbor Springs on the Fourth of July, with annual events happening from 8 a.m. through the fireworks at dusk. Clockwise from top left: plenty of runners went with a patriotic theme for the Paul Revere Run, a 5k and 10 mile event benefitting the Harbor Springs Cross Country and Track and Field teams; the fireworks display was, once again, a true showstopper; Harbor Springs Citizen of the Year, Ron McRae was honored at the free Young Americans concert after the parade; the Harbor Springs Color Guard (including one mini member in the second row), opens the downtown parade each year. Annual Shay Days set for July 15-16 Ephraim Shay may have lived in Harbor Springs in the late 1800s, but his name still has plenty of recognition in the area today. In addition to having an elementary school named after him, Shay has an entire festival, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society’s annual “Shay Days” in his honor. Happening this year on July 15-16, Shay Days events include live model steam trains, games, crafts, historical displays and self-guided tours at the famous Shay Hexagon House in downtown Harbor Springs, as well as a walking tour, ‘In Shay’s Days.” -CONTINUED on page 23.

Editor’s Note: A host of Republicans (no Democrats) are running in the August Primary for a seat on Emmet County’s Board of Commissioners. The Harbor Light is reaching out each candidate so readers can have a sense of those who may provide leadership at the county level. The interviews will be grouped on the Harbor Light Newspaper website prior to the primary for easy review.

was to be opened by the fourth grade class of 2015-2016. “We were at our class reunion last year, and I was talking with a few students and asked if they remembered making the time capsule, how old we were, and when we were supposed to dig it up,” said John Crawford, whose property the time capsule was buried on three decades ago. “Several people remembered it, but the details weren’t totally clear. So I started asking around to some

others, and we found the original newspaper article that my mom had saved about the project. From there, Jan did a bunch of work to dig up the map.” The “map” was more of a mystery than a clue, McDonald noted. “We knew the map went into the superintendent’s safe, but that was 30 years ago. The Emmet County Commissioners primary election this August is hotly contested in every district save one: District Three (covering Little Traverse Township, City of Harbor Springs, and a small portion of Bear Creek Township), a seat held by Charlie MacInnis. MacInnis has been making waves on the Emmet County Board of Commissioners for the last several years, often the lone ‘no’ vote on county projects and a vocal opponent to many recent decisions, like Emmet County starting its own ambulance -CONTINUED on page 12.
