Building Community - Together

Celebrating our local businesses For many around the country, holiday gift buying equates to a few clicks on the computer, or bumping shoulders with other hurried shoppers under the florescent lights of mall corridors. Strolling along sidewalks and peaking in decorated windows, chatting with store owners, finding unique and unexpected treasures inside small shops; these are images of the past in most cities. Such holiday shopping is a nostalgic dream, an “It’s a Wonderful Life” kind of black and white memory. Unless you live in a town where community still means something. Where there is still an authentic-- not manufactured-heartbeat downtown. Where locally owned and operated businesses are labors of love, not just commerce. In the following pages, we celebrate our small businesses and the character they add to our sense of place. The diversity of goods and services found in this area makes holiday shopping easy, and the real, sensory experience of doing so makes it joyful. We invite you to browse these pages and be reminded, again, of how lucky we are to live here. Shop in person if you can, or call and support our independent stores if you’re too far from your northern home. Especially during a season of holding close our gratitude and blessings, we encourage you to show your love, and shop local. -Your friends at the Harbor Light Newspaper Kate Bassett, Charles O’Neill, Michelle Ketterer, Danielle McIntosh, Mark Flemming, Ruth O’Neill, Kevin O’Neill
