RESIDENT FEATURE

The Meulener Bunch A Story of Smiles By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story On the first of many N’oreaster storms this past spring, an auction was held to raise funds for technology in the Little Silver school district. One of the highest bidding items for the EFLS fundraiser was a painted ocean scene bursting with color. Eyes were drawn to the collage of wooden fish, each precariously designed by Point Road’s fourth grade students. This array of vivid imagery was the hook for such a wonderful catch, but the treasure resided behind in the foundation of the piece. Wooden planks were placed together and portrayed a beautiful seascape of brushed deep blues and greens. A bursting sun beyond 4

the horizon illuminated white sails along the water’s surface. Donating his time and talents to generate this backdrop was Dr. Brian Meulener, a staple in the Little Silver community. This may have been a small detail but an important one at that and reminds one of the meaning of community. Brian pursued his artistic passions originally at the University of Delaware, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. It was here that he met his future wife Kristin who was pursing her Bachelor of the

Science. By 2004 Brian received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Two weeks later, he married Kristin in her hometown, Allentown, Pennsylvania. For six years Kristin worked in publishing sales and Brian was an Art Director for an advertising agency. Then it was in 2010 when Brian courageously made a career change with Kristin right by his side. She supported the family while Brian studied dentistry. This began a journey of sleepless nights spent at Monmouth County Library as he moved through programs at Monmouth University to Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. This year Brian officially became the residential Dentist for Meulener Dental, assuming the legacy from his father Dr. Carlos Meulener who has been practicing for more than 40 years. “We are a small, family-owned, patient focused dental practice that has brought generations of smiles to Little Silver and its surrounding towns, said Brian. Family is key for the Meuleners and each patient is treated as such. Kristin also helps out in the office, fully completing the circle of a family practice. Including the EFLS fundraiser, Meulener Dental prides in its support for many local charities and events like LS5K, Little Silver Day and the Firehouse events. When she is not greeting you warmly at the office, Kristin volunteers for many Little Silver fundraisers. Her most recent endeavor has included organizing the post-race party for the LS5K. Although she may not have grown up in Little Silver, her heart is found in all that she does for this community.

RESIDENT FEATURE CONTINUED

Before 2018, Meulener Dental was associated with Dr. Carlos Meulener, Brian’s father and mentor. Dr. Carlos Meulener has been practicing dentistry in Little Silver since 1982. Brian grew up along our beautiful peninsula, residing in Fair Haven, Shrewsbury and Little Silver. He is an alumnus of RBR’s class of 1996. The Meuleners maintain their family community in and out of the office with their two daughters Lily and Kate. Both girls keep Brian and Kristin on their feet with active passions. Lily swims for New Jersey Race Club while Kate plays travel basketball. Both enjoy travel soccer, lacrosse and tennis all with wonderfully bright smiles. The newest addition to the family on Silverside Ave is possibly the toothiest smile of the bunch. Their dog Penny was rescued in 2016 and rather than long walks on the beach, she prefers to chase seagulls. You can easily win her over with a good belly rub and some chicken. Being part of the community is important to the Meulener Family, exponentially seen with Brian’s work at the office and Kristin’s volunteer participation. When Hurricane Sandy came in 2013, their house became flooded and the car floated away. The local Little Silver Fire Department came and rescued the family. “We would like to send a special thank you to all the brave local volunteers who risked their lives to save us and many other families during that devastating storm,” said Brian. In the past five years, the neighborhood has transformed with many new and young families moving in. Although there is change since the storm has weathered, the sense of camaraderie has stayed. Lily and Kate are able to ride their bikes in the sunshine and cut through neighbor’s backyards en route to hangouts with their friends. The beauty and communal appreciation for the neighborhood resonates with the Meuleners. “We would like to thank all our neighbors and friends for supporting us and promoting our business,” said Brian.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Intelligent Office® Red Bank – Leading by Example By Allison Merchant When it comes to business, it is imperative to be smart. Making smart choices can help a business grow and flourish. This is one of the main components advocated by Intelligent Office® Red Bank. More than a decade in business, the company’s mission is to bring big-business infrastructure to any-sized businesses. “You can instantly go from a business without a true ‘home’ to a developed company, complete with multiple office locations and staff that you can rely on for the long haul,” said Kristin Ciamillo, Office Manager. “We provide full time and part time office space, administrative and receptionist services for a base month package price.”

The interview consisted of a conversation about the movie 300, jujitsu and MMA style fighting. Ciamillo was confused and convinced this was not the job she was to get. A day later she received an offer which she promptly accepted. “Ten plus years later, I am now understanding the dynamic here. Jessica and I are the backbone management. The owner trusts us to take the business seriously and believes in us to meet the goals we need to,” Ciamillo said. “The silent—but not so silent—owner brings a friendly, fun face to our table of serious work, so we can enjoy what we are doing, and can have fun in a serious situation.”

Intelligent Office® Red Bank supplies the tools for community-based businesses to help them develop into companies destined to succeed. This company’s own success story begins with the owner, fresh out of college in 2005 and in search of a career. “The overall goal in forming Intelligent Office® Red Bank was to provide some type of relief to business owners—locally and nationally—who either wanted to start a business from an idea or for the business who was hurting in the economy and needed a place to hang its hat,” Ciamillo said. In the office at Red Bank the workspace operates more like a community than a work environment with friends lasting outside the workday as well. The immediate crew includes the receptionist team: Amanda, Audrey, Jalea, and Sue. Onsite tenants include the Office Manager Kristin, and Sales Manager Jessica who are there to help each day. Every summer the office crew and Intelligent Office® members join together in Sea Bright playing beach volleyball, luncheon and holiday parties. “We inspire each other to do great things that become a valued asset to our members; whether it be motivating a business owner to start a service we know will help their business grow, watching a startup company grow to a substantially large business, or just lending an extra hand when needed,” Ciamillo said. “We are a team, we are a family, and we inspire each other every day to do better.” One of the best ways to understand the mindset and dynamic of Intelligent Office® Red Bank is to know the backstory of Ciamillo and her lasting impression. After mistaking the office for an employment agency, she was called back for an interview with the owner. Ciamillo sheepishly admits she arrived at the interview in a hoodie, having just graduated high school and naïve about entering the workforce.

8

This influence impacts those in the office to continue the friendly atmosphere. There is laughter, singing and sometimes dancing, usually near the end of the work day. Summers are sweeter with Ryan’s Ice Cream in Shrewsbury, more walks outside and the official season of Volleyball has begun. Intelligent Office® Red Bank offers a business that leads by example. It generates positive employees that are able to use that vitality in their everyday work. Intelligent Office® Red Bank can help to assist your business. “Don’t give up on your dreams. These businesses are what make our community turn in a positive and successful direction,” Ciamillo said.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Getting Started With Outsourcing And Mastering The Art Submitted by Rase Solutions In the digital world these days, opportunities are endless. With great advancements in communication and internet technologies, outsourcing almost any kind of work has become possible. The only question that we are faced with is, whether we are doing it right or not? The word outsourcing is often misunderstood, so let’s get the basics cleared out. If you own a house and have a landscaping company mow the lawn for you, you are “outsourcing” your landscaping work to the landscaping company. This article is not about outsourcing your work to people necessarily in a different country, but any geographical location whatsoever. For most of our day to day tasks we are able to connect with local individuals or companies who work for us and get the work taken care of, like babysitters, landscaping, cleaning, etc. However in the field of technology, people often wonder what route to take because hiring one or multiple people remotely will test their skills for managing people, projects, deadlines and budgets. For some entrepreneurs and companies, getting a virtual team together can be a daunting task in itself. With the understanding that hiring someone locally, or globally to work for you on a specific task, falls under the topic of outsourcing, let’s get the ball rolling. HIRING PROCESS There are several offline or online platforms where you can find people to work for you within a given budget. You do have to do a good job at screening and interviewing applicants before bringing them on board. Local/National newspapers, flyers and word of mouth may be the common offline methods for hiring freelancers, while websites like Fiverr.com are a good example for one-time tasks like writing articles, making marketing videos, proofreading content, or just giving you a shout on their Instagram. Freelancer.com and upwork.com allow you to hire freelancers on ongoing projects, while Facebook and Craigslist.org allows you to post an ad in a specific geographic location (local or abroad) and receive applications. LEGAL PROCESSES It is important to note that one country’s laws don’t necessarily apply to someone working in a different country. This means that despite you signing a Non Disclosure Agreement with someone abroad, you may not be able to take any legal action against them if they violate the agreement. Always pay close attention to local laws, and make sure you are safe before you proceed. This is a good reason to work with local companies as compared to those outside the country.

12

PROJECT MANAGEMENT The key components of managing your projects after you hire talent of your choice are Processes and Systems. From communication to development and deployment, it helps to have your processes in place so the freelancers can follow them strictly. Since you will not be seeing the employee, it’s hard to know what are they working on, how much work is done, are they on the right track or not, unless you have a process in place. We highly recommend using a project management methodology that is agile, like Scrum where you have a 5 minute video call with the employee(s) every day and discuss what was done the previous day and what they plan to work on today, and if they have any blockers that you can solve for them. Additionally every 15 days you meet for planning what should be accomplished in the next 15 days and follow up with daily stand up meetings. Additionally there are some tracking tools that you can have them install on their computers for time tracking, so you know how many hours they worked and what their activity level looks like. The programs also take screenshots of their computer screens for you, so you can see what they have been working on. The employees have agreed to using such a system and they can pause or stop the tracker when they want to do personal tasks like check emails or use Facebook–just that you don’t have to pay for that personal time. Hubstaff.com offers such a system and is highly useful in generating reports which help you pay your employees for the time they have worked. COMMUNICATION Avoid communicating through text messages, emails, or messengers like Skype and put everything on a board that helps you keep communication organized. This is extra useful if your team is working in a different time-zone. Trello.com is a decent system where you can create cards for each task and everyone can comment and communicate on each card keeping everything focused and easy to track. Trello notifies you via email or their mobile app when someone posts a comment or moves a card, so you can respond promptly. STRATEGY TO SUCCEED Having someone local can be a great asset. A company that understands your requirements, hires the required talent, and manages the project for you. The company works as your Project Manager and reports the progress to you while giving you access to all the reporting and systems that allow you to participate in the communication that takes place on the boards. It is not only time efficient but in many cases cost effective too since the company will have all the processes and technology in place already and can get you started on a short notice. Good luck with your ventures, I hope you can bring those wonderful ideas to life using the tips shared in this article.

Sickles Market Caring for the Earth By Ryan Keating For more than 10 years Sickles Market has been working with the Little Silver Point Road school on a very special project! Every Earth Day, Bob Sickles visits the school to talk about the importance of planting and giving back to the planet. This year Sickles market donated lettuce plants to many students, encouraging them to grow and learn what they can. There’s also something very special about giving your attention to a plant and observing the fruits of your labor! In return, the students take brown paper Sickles bags and draw all over them. They create beautiful representations of Earth Day and we always hang the bags up in the store for everyone to see! They are quite inspiring. These bags are used and reused multiple times, and it saves a good chunk of energy in the process. We appreciate the kids at Little Silver Point Road School and their amazing leader, Principal Pamela Albert Devine.

Best Beer for Your Summer BBQ By John Ross Cocozza, Owner/Founder of Ross Brewing Company

SOME OF OUR SUMMER FAVORITE INCLUDE: • Kane Head High 6.5% IPA • Carton This Town 4.9% Lager • Little Dog Local Girl Blonde Ale 4.5% Fresh Ginger Blonde Ale • Beach Haus Olé IPA 6.4% IPA • Jughandle Kölsch 4.9% Kölsch • Cape May The Bog Cranberry Shandy 3.9% Fruit Shandy • River Horse Summer Blonde 4.5% American Blonde Ale plethora of quality craft brewers, so knowing what you’re drinking in that respect is important too!

July is the prime month in the summer for celebrating and kicking off sunny days with BBQs and cookouts. For those 21 and older, a cold beer is an added pleasure to the bright days and warm nights. One thing is for sure, the hotter the weather outside, the more refreshing a cold beer feels. Some beer companies have built their entire marketing campaigns and brand identities around that very idea! While tastes are subjective, for sure, certain beer styles do tend to lend themselves more to a hot day outside at a summer barbecue as opposed to curled up to a warm fire in the dead of winter. Knowing what you are drinking is always a good idea. Higher-ABV beers might have a bigger impact on you, quicker, and if you’re not aware what you're drinking they could seriously impair your ability to drive, for example, without you realizing it. As well, whenever possible, we here at Ross Brewing try to support locally produced beers from our state’s

We also tend to feel that beer is freshest and tastes most like the brewer intends when bought closest to the source—so at the brewery is certainly best, with local shops and drinking establishments right behind. Once a beer has been shipped across state lines or national borders, it may no longer taste exactly as the brewer intended, something to keep in mind. At Ross Brewing we care first and foremost about our community, and the brewery itself is a vehicle for us to help the community. The extent of our work truly created the best family we could have asked for. We work with the American Littoral Society on Operation Oyster with our oyster beers OYSTOUT and GOYSTER to help restore the oyster beds in our beloved Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers. We collaborate with Lunch Break and Fulfill to combat hunger right here in the Two River area. And we participate alongside Autism Speaks to aid those in our community living and learning with life on the autism spectrum. Our community is the most important thing to us. We look forward to being able to share the beers we love so much with our friends and neighbors once we get the brewery open later this year, and until then, maybe we’ll see you at a barbecue near you!

EDUCATION

A Night to Remember By Allison Merchant Prom. It is a four-letter word that holds such an impact with students in high school. It has inspired songs like the hilarious Will You Go to Prom with Me…Jesse Buy Nothing performed by Hellogoodbye. Movies are made with prom as the central plot like Pretty in Pink, She’s All That, Prom, Prom Night and possibly the best: Carrie. However, Prom night involves more than just formal wear and the cha-cha slide. It also is a celebration of graduation, the end of a school year and new beginnings. Whenever there is celebrating, there can be risks of underage drinking. This is why most schools have implemented safety programs including mock crashes to educate students on the dangers of drinking and driving. On May 24, Red Bank Regional High School District (RBR) conducted the Project Prom Program to encourage RBR seniors to take caution when driving during prom season, encouraging them to make wise choices. This year’s program portrayed the emergency services of Little Silver and Shrewsbury conducted a mock crash using three cars donated by Red Bank Recycling. Role-playing student victims laid unconscious in mangled automobiles while the fire department personnel employed the frightening “jaws of life” to extricate the injured and whisked them off by ambulance, and medivac helicopter. The latter prop was provided by the New Jersey State Police. After the mock crash demonstration, an assembly was held for further education of driving under the influence or even driving carelessly. Defense Attorney Pete O’Mara explained the legal penalties for driving while under the influence or even being in a car when others are in possession of an illegal substance. The true eye-opener of the even was the presentation by Donna Setaro about the Move Over Awareness Campaign (M.A.R.C. 39:4-92.2). The acronym represents her son Marc Castellano, a state trooper killed on a New Jersey highway while performing his job. The Move Over Law seeks to protect

emergency workers while working on highways. It requires motorists to slow down or change lanes as they approach stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks and other highway safety vehicles displaying red, blue and/or amber flashing lights. Violators pay a fee of $100 to $500 depending on their driving record. Setaro tugged at heartstrings as she presented her message using shocking video clips of actual emergency management personnel struck by cars while doing their jobs on dangerous New Jersey highways, and pictures of her son, a proud state trooper, husband and father. A wave of silence washed over the young audience when she pulled one memory after another from her black garment bag: the first outfit he wore as a baby coming home from the hospital; his state trooper shirt—the symbol of a dream achieved to serve his community and support his family; the thank you letter at his graduate school graduation—the last note she would ever receive from her son; his Christmas stocking hung on the hearth with all the others, seven Christmas’ after his passing. Setaro vividly told the story of the worst day of her life in 2010 when her son was called to a car that ran out of gas on Route 195 in Howell. The program was coordinated by its creator, Little Silver Police Sergeant Pete Gibson, and assisted by RBR School Resource Officer Rob Chenoweth and the RBR Student Assistance Counselor Lori Todd. During the week of prom, Shrewsbury and Union Beach officers visited the senior classrooms to detail the fines and penalties for drunk driving and to share national statistics with the students. Students were also asked to drive a golf cart around an obstacle course while wearing fatal-vision goggles to simulate intoxication. RBR senior and class president Michael Eulner commented on the program, “The whole idea that this has been going on for 12 years shows the commitment the police and school have about the prom season when people can make decisions that can change people’s lives. Seeing it first hand was eye-opening. I got chills through my whole body.”

Following His Dreams – RBR’s John Tuohy’s Parallax Dreams By Allison Merchant

RBR junior, John Tuohy of Little Silver, won an award at this year’s Garden State Film Festival for his short film, “Parallax Dreams”.

At the Garden State Film Festival at the end of March Little Silver’s own John Tuohy received an award for his short film “Parallax Dreams”. Tuohy, majoring in Interactive Media from RBR’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts just finished his junior year. Along with Communications High School student Abigail Karl and her film “Conquer”, they shared recognition for “Best Home Grown Student Short” in the high school category. Tuohy explained, “’Parallax Dreams’ is very symbolic and tells a story without words, taking advantage of everything film has to offer in communication over any other medium. It is an introspective piece telling a story of someone who is lost, growing up and dealing with self-identity issues. It is really up to the viewer’s interpretation of its meaning.”

“Parallax Dreams” has been featured in multiple film festivals. This poignant production has so far brought Tuohy three acclimations. A year ago the film received the top prize of Best Picture as well as Best Short Narrative at the Big Dreams and Silver Screens Youth Festival in Rahway, NJ, and also Best Short NJ Filmmaker at Art All Night - Trenton International Film Festival. He stated of his film’s latest recognition, “I am honored to win an award in such a Jersey centric festival. I really feel as if I have been welcomed into a greater film scene in New Jersey.”

FIVE WAYS TO RULE THE LEADERBOARDS 1. Post great content (at least once per day. Twice is best.) 2. Request citizenship with many people (and they will often request it back). The more citizens you have in your Myopolis, the more exposure you will build. Exposure, interaction, comments etc. increase the likelihood that you will trend higher. 3. Interact with many posts. Comment, share, pingworthy, agree etc. The more interactions you have the more you will increase interest in people becoming your citizens. The more citizens, the more exposure for you and your brand. 4. Invite people to Myopolis. The more people you invite from other social media sites, or people who are new to social media, the larger your base. Remember, people don’t need to leave their current social media communities (although once they experience Myopolis they may make that choice). At first, it’s harder to take someone away than it is to get them to add Myopolis. 5. Build your own communities that matter. Get four or five close friends, colleagues or clients to use Myopolis as their primary means of connecting. Even small groups begin to carry heavy influence and motivate people to remain active.

GREENWAYS & WATERWAYS

Fossiling in Poricy Park By Billie Crawford-McNally New Jersey has a rich history which heralds back to the Revolutionary War but our story started long before then. And that piece of history takes us, to our next adventure, fossiling. The Poricy Park Fossil Beds is a perfect place to bring the kids at the close of the school year. While the days are heating up on the Jersey Shore, the Poricy Brook keeps its cool. Sheltered beneath the protective canopy of foliage, the walkways and stream-beds are a welcome relief from a sweltering summer day. There are two components to Poricy Park, one is the Visitor’s Center, which can be found at 345 Oak Hill Road in Middletown. This section of the park has 250 acres of preserved land and houses the Nature Center and rangers. There you will find plenty of walking trails which suit all levels of ability. The fossil beds are located on Middletown-Lincroft Road in Middletown. Keep a keen eye out for the sign and parking lot as it is easy to miss. There are shaded benches and a board with warnings and suggestions on how best to enjoy your time at the park. Old sneakers or water shoes are perfect for the creek. I suggest you bring a towel, dry clothes and extra shoes to change into after your adventure. Bring snacks and drinks but of course remember to clean up after yourselves. As soon as you begin your journey down the main path, the over grown trees, lush ferns and giant skunk cabbage help create a transformation from every day to primordial. You should wade right into the creek to feel the full effect of the magic this special corner of our county weaves. There are places to access the beds along the walk way but tramping through the creek is definitely my favorite way to go. I have never come across a throng of visitors but the further down the trail you go the more isolated it becomes, in a good way. There is no digging necessary (and in fact it is frowned upon). The 73 million year old Cretaceous treasures you are hunting hide in the silty sand and pebbles in and around the river bed. All you need to find them are a

trowel and a screen or nets to sift sand from fossil. We have found fossilized oyster shell, cephalopod and sharks’ teeth and probably so much more that we just tossed back not knowing what they were. Bring something to hold your newfound valuables, keeping in mind that you are only meant to take five per visit. Below is a link with more detail as to what you will find, an explanation of the area and how it was formed and precautions to take while in the park. I suggest you print it and take it on your adventure to better identify what you have found, and I promise you will be amazed. www.middletownnj.org/DocumentCenter/View/697/Fossils-of-PoricyBrook The first time we went, when the kids were very young, we cleaned our booty and promptly scattered them about the yard. It was not until I took my Cub Scout troop to the Nature Center and had a naturalist give a presentation, that I fully understood what we had discovered. If you think your children can sit for the quick tutorial, it is well worth it but sometimes you just need to get your feet wet and hands dirty ASAP. To research this piece, I asked my children now 18 and 14 to come visit our old stomping grounds with me. As soon as we entered the water at the first sandy beach we found fossils scattered about, exposed from the recent rain fall. We wandered along the water and reminisced about the time we came across a mother wild turkey with her poults (babies) scuttling along the path. A gentle wind blew, loosening downy seeds from a soaring tree and suddenly it was snowing white tuffs. As I watched my kids, who are no longer children try to catch these bits of fluff, I realized the treasure I had found was not only in the riverbeds of Poricy Park. Billie is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our April 2018 issue Family Feature!
