our story

our own works of art: our two little ones inspired our business! The idea for Little Cord Art was born when we were expecting our first child in 2009. A routine ultrasound revealed that the umbilical cord had two blood vessels rather than the typical three—a condition called single umbilical artery that occurs in roughly 10% of pregnancies. Because Keith is a medical doctor with fellowship training in pathology, he was keen to look at a cross-section of the cord after our healthy baby’s arrival. And it looked beautiful. (Our son was gorgeous, too!). We made a canvas for the baby’s nursery and it became a conversation piece in our home. Over the next few years, we created more Little Cord Art pieces for our second child, as well as for friends, who cherish the art and the miracle of birth that it represents. We are thrilled to now be able to do the same for you. Little Cord Art commemorates your child’s birth with meaningful, one-of-a kind pieces of art that you and your children can enjoy for a lifetime. We’d love to create one for you!

a new tradition Little cord art helps you celebrate your child’s birth in a completely new way... your work of art is born! The birth of a child is a moment no parent wants to forget. Here in North America, we commemorate this event through newborn photos, baby foot and hand prints and even birth videos.

Native American tribes, a piece of the cord is kept for good luck and good health.

In many countries around the world, however, parents celebrate the miracle of birth by also celebrating the umbilical cord. After all, it is the only organ ever shared by two people—mother and child—and it is the essential lifeline to babies in the womb, delivering nutrients and oxygen as they develop. It is a strong, literal connection between mother and child.

Don’t just throw your child’s cord away. Instead, let us help you preserve all it represents through art.

birth traditions around the world For example, did you know that in Turkey, many parents believe that what they do with their child’s umbilical cord will influence his or her future? So they bury it in a place of knowledge to represent their child’s future career; or bury it in a stable to encourage their child to love animals. In India and Mexico, it is a popular custom to keep a piece of the cord as a kind of good luck charm. In Japan, parents keep a piece of each child’s cord in a box as a memento of their birth. In Jamaica, the umbilical cord may be buried and a tree planted on the spot. The tree, called the birth tree, is a source of pride for children as they are growing up, and creates a sense of connection with the land on which the tree is planted. Finally, in some

a new tradition: cord art After your child’s birth, your care provider simply cuts a section of your child’s cord and places it in the preservation agent we provide. You mail it to us and we work with you to create a one-of-akind piece of art. (you can learn more about how we do it on our website: littlecordart.com/how-we-do-it) The resulting image is printed with archival inks on high-quality canvas and stretched over a frame, producing gallery-worthy artworks that you’ll be proud to display in your home. Little Cord Art is a new birth tradition!
