Litehouse Pools had its humble beginnings in 1959 through the sale of high quality, concentrated chemicals distributed to residential swimming pool owners and commercial operators. Through hard work and dedication, we have been successfully growing ever since. By 1965, we rapidly expanded into other areas of the industry, including maintenance and construction. And this expansion led to the first opening of a full service retail store in Berea, Ohio in 1967. And we didn’t stop there! Today, Litehouse is headquartered in Strongsville, Ohio and has grown to 15 retail locations across Ohio

Enzyme Education
Enzymes are a natural substance and have been around since the earth has been spinning. The modern definition of an enzyme seems to have been discovered in 1833, when French chemist Anselme Payen discovered the first enzyme, diastase. A few decades later, while studying the fermentation of sugar to alcohol by yeast, Louis Pasteur came to the conclusion that this fermentation was catalyzed by a vital force contained within the yeast cells called “ferments,” which were thought to function only within living organisms (Wikipedia, 2013). It was later discovered that enzymes function outside of living organisms as well as within living organisms. Enzymes significantly speed up the natural biodegradation process of non-living organic waste. They help to more quickly catalyze, or break down these items in swimming pool and spa water. Non-naturally grown enzymes are formulated to react with and break down non-living organic waste into smaller and smaller molecules, until they are reduced to their elemental constituents of Co2 and H2o.

The goal was to see precisely what was polluting pools and spas and not just assume what “bad stuff” was being added to the water. Only once the true culprits were identified could more precise and powerful enzyme “blends” be created to best combat the very real issue of non-living organic contamination. Some of the enzymes in broad spectrum blends of enzymes are more reactive with fats and oils, while others are more effective at helping to break down ammonia based compounds. The results of this type of broad spectrum blend yields thousands of potential reactions on nonliving organic pollutants. It is the most effective way to break down the root cause of many of the most plaguing symptoms in the pool and spa world. The final product is actually brewed from various botanical extracts, resulting in the appearance of a very dark brewed tea. So in order to truly get the most bang for your buck when it comes to these types of products, seek a broad spectrum blend of enzymes specifically designed to meet the needs for your pool and spa water treatment.
There is no question that water for swimming can benefit from the use of enzymes. While that fact is being supported by the growth enzyme products have seen throughout the years, it also makes sense to first take a closer look at the problems for which they can be used. What is it that is polluting our water in swimming pools and spas today? Multiple manufacturers within in the pool and spa industry teamed up and collected real world
The proactive use of enzyme maintenance products by a pool professional could significantly decrease potential problems in pools and spas. You may not be able to control what your bathers add to the water when you’re not there, but with the use of enzymes consistently you may be able to help control what is removed. This step could save you time, money and the headache of dealing with potential problems when they arise.

The Heart Of Your Pool The filtration system is the “heart” of your
swimming pool. Along with circulation and sanitation, the job of the filtration system is to keep pool water safe and clean by
removing undissolved dirt and debris that has entered the water via swimmers and the environment. Compromising the
“heart” of your pool can lead to more time and money spent on maintenance and less time spent on family fun.
There are three types of filters.
Take a closer look at the following options to determine which filtration system will best fit your family’s pool.
SAND FILTERS How it works: Of all the types of filters, sand filters have been around the longest and are the easiest to use. Once water leaves the pool thru the skimmer, it travels to the pump which forces the water into a valve. From there, the water is sprayed onto the top of the tank containing coarse grade sand. The impurities are then trapped in the sand and the clean water is collected and sent back to the pool via tubes. Maintenance: Sand filters should be cleaned every 7 to 10 days. Cleaning sand filters is quick and easy. First, turn off the pump and switch the dial on the valve to the backwash position. After that, turn the pump back on. This will reverse the flow of water, pushing dirty water back into the valve and through the backwash port where it drains into the yard. After 5 minutes of backwashing, the sight glass will show that the sand is clean. Turn the pump off one last time and switch the valve dial back to the filter position. Lastly, turn the pump back on.

The Heart Of Your Pool cont...
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (D.E.) How it works: D.E. filters are one of the most efficient types of filters on the market. They use D.E. powder along with a series of Polyester/ Dacron grids inside the tank to clean the water. Because the D.E. powder used is so fine, these filters catch much more debris than a sand filter. While the pump is running, pre-mix exactly 4 pounds of D.E. powder and pour it into the pool skimmer. From there, the powder mixture travels to the filter tank where it coats the grids. As the water passes through the filter, the powder-coated-grids trap the dirt and debris. Finally, backwash the filter to get rid of the impurities. Refill the filter with D.E. powder. Maintenance: D.E. filters should be cleaned every 7 to 10 days. First, turn off the pump and “bump” the handle 5 or 6 times to loosen the powder and debris from the grids. Once the debris settles to the bottom of the tank, restart the pump. Next, the system will need to be flushed and recharged. To flush the system, turn off the pump and bump the handle 10 to 12 times. Open the waste port and allow waste to exit the system.
ELEMENT FILTERS How it works: The third type of filter is called a cartridge or element. Originally, cartridges were made of paper. Now, they are made of polymers, which greatly improve longevity and efficiency. The water is cleaned when it passes through the element material, so no powders or sand is needed. Also, no water is lost from the pool. Cartridges combine clean water with low maintenance. Maintenance: Since the surface area to be cleaned is smaller, cartridges/ elements only need to be cleaned every 3 to 4 weeks. Cleaning the filter is easy. Turn off the pump, spin off the lock ring, and remove the element. Next, rinse the element with your garden hose, and place it back in the tank.

Sanitizers
Sanitize with Chlorine Stabilized chlorine products sanitize your pool water and kill bacteria. Stabilized chlorine products are protected from sunlight degradation and are an ideal means to keep your pool clear and clean. We can determine the best form and type of sanitization for your particular needs to help you maintain a free chlorine level of 1-3 ppm in the pool at all times. Sanitize with Bromine Some people prefer bromine as an alternative to chlorine for pool sanitation. To utilize bromine effectively, an automatic brominator should be installed in your pool.
Oxidizers
Shocking your pool on a regular basis is a critical step in keeping the pool water clear and clean. Swimmers and the environment add waste to the pool that must be eliminated on a regular basis in order to prevent problems such as algae and cloudy water.
Algaecides:
Preventing algae is the key to fun in your pool. Preventing algae from growing in the pool, algaecides act as a backup to your normal sanitization program. Algaecide should be added after every shock treatment.
