Mexican Pride by Jason Collins Photos by Mary Alice Wright

Being Mexican is synonymous with homeland, independence, nationalist pride; but on what aspects are we based to be proud of our nationality? Following the thoughts of a Mexican, one of the references on which we rely to be proud of our nationality is the competition won with a foreign country that we perceive as superior; for example: victories in Olympic games or the much idolized World Cup.

Another reason to be a proud Mexican is cultural diversity and everything that this comprises, we have a vast cultural diversity, it is not the same to live in the center of the country to live in the north, a well-known example of this is the perception that we have death and the role it plays in our lives, the Day of the Dead; As we celebrate today, it is a tradition that mixes pre-Hispanic roots with Catholic ones, where our loved ones who have passed away are celebrated for a day.

A moment that I consider of great pride is the solidarity shown by the Mexican people in natural disasters involving a large number of compatriots, a clear example of this is the past September 19, 2017 in which an earthquake with magnitude of 7.1 degrees shook much of the central area of the country, affecting mainly Guerrero, Morelos and Mexico City. Minutes after the earthquake yielded thousands of Mexicans took to the streets to help in all that was necessary, medicine, food, water, tools, raise rubble in order to rescue innocent lives that lay beneath a collapsed building, and the best is that there did not end the help, continued to get help from different states of the country, even people who lost their home left their city to help brigadistas who were helping in Jojutla Morelos one of the municipalities most damaged by the earthquake.

Without a doubt, a moment that made me proud to be Mexican, to support my neighbor. Whether or not you are proud of being Mexican, it is important that, as a society, we realize that not only are issues such as corruption, impunity, poverty and crime present in our country, but we can also see the "good side" , the nutritive part that also exists, which is also present, since it is a characteristic of our daily life that the majority of society leaves aside, mentally dividing the country in two and seeing only the "bad" part. In conclusion, the sense of Mexican pride has its roots in the history of our nation, as well as in the individual form of how we perceive ourselves as an entity and as a nation. The pride of being Mexican speaks of our collective identity as well as the new challenges that we would have to face as a mass in order to repair historical-generational wounds.
