President's Message According to Punxsatawny Phil, Spring is right around the corner! I could not be happier.

This month the Board is holding two listening sessions to hear from you about what your concerns and priorities are. As we did last year, we will use this, in part, as a guiding document for our work as a Board. The first meeting was held Sunday, February 9, and the next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 18, at 7:00 p.m. If you can't make it in person, feel free to email me your priorities and we will add it to the list! More next month on the outcomes of those session.

As a board we are excited to launch our Committees again. The Committees and how to join are on page 3. (A detailed description of each Committees was included in January’s issue of The Crier, which is available on the Arlington Village website, www.ArlingtonVillage.com.) I hope many of you will join and help make this community great.

OUR COMMUNITY ROOM GOT A FACELIFT! Thank you, Stephen, and our team of workers who did a wonderful job of updating the Community Room.

No longer an eyesore, the room now boasts painted (and patched) walls in a beautiful soft green, replaced ceiling tiles, and — the “wow” factor — new vinyl flooring.

COVENANTS CORNER No One Likes to Step in Pet Waste!

It’s a matter of respect for our Arlington County neighbors and Arlington Village Community to clean up pet waste (including dogs and cats). We realize not all pets walked in and around AV are residents of the community. Our surrounding neighbors also enjoy walking around our beautiful grounds and our peaceful ravine path that connects S. Barton to S. Edgewood Street.

Easy Disposal Tips  It’s easy to clean up by carrying plastic baggies in your pocket. The baggies can be secured and thrown away in the garbage.

Why pick up pet waste? Here are some straightforward responses: It’s the law! The waste removal ordinance, known as the pooper-scooper law, requires Virginia State (Arlington County) pet owners to remove and dispose of, feces that their dogs and or cats have deposited on public areas and or another person's property.

Contaminated water! Stormwater carries pet waste and other pollutants directly into waterways. Animal waste adds nitrogen to the water. Excess nitrogen depletes the oxygen in water necessary for beneficial underwater grasses, wildlife, and fish. Animal waste may contain harmful organisms such as Giardia, Salmonella and E. Coli that can be transmitted to humans and other animals by ingesting contaminated water.

courtyard? Purchase a small (5 Liter / 1.32 gallon) step pedal trash can for your back deck. Most have a removable bucket which makes it easy to carry your pet bags to the big garbage bins in your courtyard.  Worried about the odor? Your small step pedal

trash should have a lid, line the bucket with a bag, and toss a handful of coffee beans in the bottom of the can to neutralize the odor. Your neighbor will be happy to not see or smell your dog waste bags.

You will be too.  Worried about using too many plastic bags? Due

to unregulated guidelines and misleading packing, not all poop bags are earth friendly. Bio Bags decompose and meet the biodegradable criteria for plastics. Waste bags that are water-soluble are a great choice for a more earthy friendly choice for pet bags.

Other dangerous health issues! Roundworms and hookworms deposited by infected animals can live in the soil for long periods of time and be transmitted to other animals and humans. It takes dog waste a long time to decompose. * (more to follow on proper steps to decomposing pet waste)

Auto theft and larceny are on the rise throughout Arlington County. Here are some prevention tips from Arlington County Police Department; for more information and to sign up for alerts, visit www.arlingtonva.us.

 Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.

Pull on the door handle to verify it’s locked.  Never leave the area while your vehicle is running.

Doing so is illegal in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Take all valuables out of your vehicle.  Do not leave your keys, key fobs, or valet keys in your

vehicle. This includes keys to a secondary vehicle.

Report suspicious activity by calling the Emergency Communications Center at 703-558-2222.

If you see a suspect in or around your vehicle, do not approach them and dial 9-1-1 immediately.

RECYCLING IN ARLINGTON VILLAGE Recycling posters have been posted at each of the refuse areas around the Village.

Please do NOT put glass in the blue recycling bins (see sidebar on the right).

ALL items should be disposed of using the bins! The waste contractor only disposes what’s inside the bins; if an item/ box is too big to break down or does not fit, please inform the Village Office so one of our maintenance workers can remove the item.

Below is a quick guide of what can be placed in the recycling bins:

What’s Going on with Glass in Arlington?

A significant drop in the market value of glass recyclables means it is no longer economically or environmentally sustainable for Arlington County to collect them via single-stream recycling. Given the change, the County is offering tips to reduce the environmental impact of using glass food and beverage containers:  Buy fewer products in glass containers and more in recyclable metal or even plastic  Reuse glass containers for new storage and other purposes  Drop off glass jars and bottles (no windows, mirrors, etc.) in presorted glass-only bins at the County’s two recycling drop-off centers and three other glass-only drop-off locations for crushing in Fairfax County and reuse in new glass products and as construction and landscaping material.

The Arlington Village Office and the Board of Directors are working on options for glass disposal in the Village and will keep residents updated.

PIKE HISTORY How Arlington Made Sense of Its Street Names The 1935 Arlington County Directory of Street Names represents a unique moment in Arlington history-- a time when many Arlingtonians had to re-learn the names of their streets and those of their neighbors.

During the early 1900s, as Arlington County experienced a surge in new subdivisions, streetcars, and other development. However, there was little coordination or central planning, which resulted in confusing and often repeated street names. By one account, there were as many 25 roads named "Arlington" — "Washington," "Virginia," and "Lee" were also popular. This made our county difficult to navigate for visitors, postal carriers, and emergency dispatchers alike. In addition, the Post Office Department dictated that "no postal office would be allocated to Arlington until its street naming scheme was more coherent and logical."

To address the situation, a Street Naming Committee was established. After a number of failed considerations, the committee solicited feedback from county residents and decided that the county be divided into two sections — North and South — separated by Arlington Boulevard (US Route 50). From there (in general): • Numbered streets run east-west, parallel to Arlington Boulevard, and North and South designations follow numbered street names.

• Named streets run north-south, and North and South designations precede named street names. These streets are named in alphabetical order from east to west, skipping the letters X, Y, and Z. When the end of the alphabet is reached, it is repeated with additional syllables — thus Oak and Quinn Streets are to the east of Oakland and Quincy, which are in turn east of Ohio and Quantico Streets.

• Boulevards, Drives, and Roads are major thoroughfares with historically recognized names, most of which were not renamed. These are the only through streets, unlike numbered and named streets, which tend to be broken up at times and intended primarily for local neighborhood traffic.
