Courses at Signals are designed for small groups to work with high quality equipment and resources, whilst remaining affordable. This offers the best opportunity to learn skills or try something new.

Signals Open Day!

An introduction to the basics of Adobe Photoshop (software that enables you to manipulate digital pictures). Bring your own photos on a memory stick and we’ll show you how to digitally enhance them. Use a range of techniques including simple airbrushing, inserting text and adjusting colours and light. This introductory course will help you make the most of your photos. Basic computer literacy is essential. If you have Photoshop loaded on your laptop bring it along for a discounted price.
Experience all the excitement of film production on this intensive course. Designed for those looking to gain practical filmmaking experience. Learn the principles of storytelling, film language and video production. Get to grips with writing, directing, producing, sound recording and post-production whilst producing a short film. This course will provide you with the basic skills you will need to make your own films.

Following on from the Photoshop 1 workshop, this course is designed for those who have a basic knowledge of the software. Transform your photos using layer masks and other features to further manipulate your images.

If you’ve never paid a visit to Colchester Castle Park in spring then you’re missing out on something special. A Green Flag Award winner for 11 years in a row, these beautiful public gardens showcase some truly breathtaking botanicals. Bring along your camera or use one of our Canon Digital SLRs and our photography tutor will show you how to infuse your images with the light and colour so unique at this time of year. Come back to Signals and learn how to perform basic adjustments to your photos using Photoshop.
Web Design Autumn Photography Fri 8th November, 10 – 2pm
Make the most of this beautiful time of year by bringing your digital camera along (or use one of our Canon Digital SLRs) to our photography workshop. We’ll venture outside to Castle Park (weather permitting!) and show you all the tips and tricks you need for taking great pictures outdoors. Then we’ll head back to Signals studio to capture our images and edit them using Photoshop. Suitable for adults and families.

Create your own story, characters and sets then learn the basics of stop-motion animation using plasticine to create a short animated film.
If you’ve been to one of our Claymation workshops before, this workshop will take your animation skills to the next step. In pairs or individually you’ll be given your own animation station to work on so you can create your own short film from start to finish.

This is an enjoyable workshop for young people who love to draw. Our tutor will show you how to bring your art work to life through animation.
Signals Summer Film Camp (age 12+)
Mon 19th to Wed 21st August, 10 – 4pm
Our great film camp is a three-day practical film school for young people providing the ultimate filmmaking experience. Participants will work in small groups to create a short film. 11 Activities include: Day 1: Film Screenings and Ideas Discussion, Scriptwriting and Storyboarding, Camera and Sound Skills Day 2: Production Roles, Filming Day 3: Filming, Editing Skills Workshop, Post-Production and a Screening for friends and family.

If you’ve ever wondered how animated films by the likes of Tim Burton are made, then this workshop will show you how it’s done. Using a range of artist materials including plasticine, you will create your own short animated film from beginning to end and edit it together on professional animation software.

Youth Film Club Are you interested in making films and learning more about film and digital production? Then join our regular Monday Youth Film Club to learn more about film and digital production.
Signals Media Arts Centre runs two Youth Film Clubs: one for ages 11 to 13 and another for 14 to 17 year olds on Monday evenings. It’s a chance to share your ideas, learn filmmaking and media skills and make new friends. You will work as part of a team to create your own films and meet people working in the industry. Lisa Wright is Signals’ Education Co-ordinator and has been with us for 5 years. Since graduating from Bournemouth University’s Media School, Lisa now plans our education programme, delivering many of our workshops and projects for children and young people.
Ben Green has been working in the multimedia/events industry for 15 years and has a wealth of technical, creative and marketing skills. He brings his experience, enthusiasm and ability to explain in plain English to his popular & successful workshops.
Nick Wood has been a professional photographer for many years. His current work includes portraits, weddings, product photography and sport. He established Unshaken Photography Training 5 years ago and runs short, 1-day photography courses to small groups focusing upon the latest techniques for creating great photography.

Ben Tyler is the creative director of 33dotdesign, a Colchester based web and graphic design agency. They are located in the Signals building, and if you like this booklet, they’re the great people that designed it.
Stan and Peter are the creative force behind Vision4Arts; an inclusive and collaborative arts and media organisation. They work across many art and media forms and have produced games for multiple platforms.
Deborah trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and worked extensively, under stage name Deborah Popett, in TV and Theatre; including leads in West End musicals. She is now a primary school teacher.
