And finally

This week is the anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi Circa 1181 – 3rd October 1226 (He died singing Psalm 141, "Voce mea ad Dominum"). Translated is ‘with my voice to the Lord’ Canonized by Pope Gregory IX on 16 July 1228.

Feast day 4th October when it is customary for churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals. Designated patron saint of Italy. San Francisco in California, United States, is named after him. On 29 November 1979, Pope John Paul II declared Francis the patron saint of ecology. On 28 March 1982, John Paul II said that Francis' love and care for creation was a challenge and a reminder "not to behave like dissident predators where nature is concerned, but to assume responsibility for it, taking all care so that everything stays healthy and integrated, so as to offer a welcoming and friendly environment even to those who succeed us.

Yet nearly 800 years after his death we are still trying to save the planet.
